Documentary fans have a lot to be excited about this month on HBO and Max. April begins with the premiere of The Synanon Fix, a docuseries that follows the rise and fall of the cult-like drug rehabilitation program Synanon. The documentary Brandy Hellville and the Cult of Fast Fashion takes a deep-dive into the controversial “one size fits most” clothing brand Brandy Mellville and the impact of fast fashion on the planet.
An American Bombing: The Road to April 19th looks at the surge of political violence and anti-government sentiment that led to the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing, and the effects still felt nearly 30 years later. HBO is also returning with a second part to their popular docuseries The Jinx, with filmmakers continuing their investigation of Robert Durst.
But if documentaries aren’t your thing, there’s still plenty of popular films hitting Max in April, like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,...

Sylvester Stallone is one of the legendary action heroes of the 80s and 90s. The actor created a brand for himself as the indestructible one-many army through his Rambo films. Additionally, he also became synonymous with the Rocky franchise and his character Rocky Balboa, which he conceptualized from the beginning.
Sylvester Stallone as John Rambo in First Blood
However, before his fame as an actor, Stallone struggled to make a living and would do odd jobs to earn a buck. Even when he was born, his mother underwent a difficult surgery which resulted in an injury to the nerves on his face. Stallone addressed this when people started accusing him of undergoing plastic surgery on his face.

After working together on the surprisingly good old school action movie The Beekeeper, director David Ayer and actor Jason Statham are set to reteam on another action project, Levon’s Trade. And this time they’ll be working from a screenplay that was written by Sylvester Stallone! (With some revisions by Ayer.) Levon’s Trade was announced a few months ago, and Deadline reports that it has just secured distribution through Amazon MGM. Amazon MGM will be giving the film a wide theatrical release in the U.S., while Prime Video takes streaming rights in a slew of major international territories. “Outside of the Prime Video international territories (where the film may go online only), producers Black Bear have sold the film independently to theatrical distributors in multiple overseas markets.”

Jason Statham must have enjoyed working with David Ayer on “The Beekeeper.” He’s re-upping to headline Ayer’s next action film, “Levon’s Trade.”
Based on the novel by famed comics author (and the creator of Batman arch-foe Bane) Chuck Dixon, Sylvester Stallone will adapt the crime thriller. This marks a rare occasion whereby Stallone writes a film in which he doesn’t star. The 2013 Statham action drama “Homefront” remains an underrated gem of a genre flick.
Black Bear and BlockFilm will present the package at AFM, adapting the first of 11 best-selling novels featuring Levon Cade. Cade (Statham) is a reformed criminal currently on the straight and narrow and working construction. However, when his boss’s teenage daughter Jenny vanishes, he’s called upon to reemploy the skills that made him a legendary figure in the shadowy world of black ops. According to Deadline, Jason Statham is set to star in Levon’s Trade, an action movie to be directed by David Ayer from a screenplay by none other than Sylvester Stallone.
Levon’s Trade is adapted from the novel of the same name by Chuck Dixon and follows Levon Cade (Statham) as he leaves his “profession” behind to go “straight” and work in construction. “He wants to live a simple life and be a good father to his daughter,” reads Deadline’s description. “But when his boss’s teenage daughter Jenny vanishes, he’s called upon to re-employ the skills that made him a legendary figure in the shadowy world of black ops. His hunt for the missing college student takes him deep into the heart of a sinister criminal conspiracy creating a chain reaction that will threaten his new way of life.“

If there is cinematic butt to be kicked, rest assured that Jason Statham will be at the front of the line. Since he burst onto the scene in Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels in 1998, he’s left a lot of broken bodies and wrecked cars in his wake. And when Expendables 4 rolls out on September 20, he will be nearing his 50th film, the lion’s share being unapologetic explosive action.
Statham makes movies with staying power. He’s made four Expendables films, three Transporters, two Mechanics (2011 and 2016), tw0 Cranks (2006 and 2009) and two Megs (2018 and 2023). Oh, yes, he also jumped into the Fast and Furious universe, making Furious 7 (2015), The Fate of the Furious (2017), Fast X (2023) and the spinoff Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw (2019), teaming with Dwayne Johnson.
As a leading man, his films have delivered $1.8 billion worldwide, according to The Numbers.

This story about “Queen Charlotte” costume designers Lyn Paolo and Laura Frecon first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama and Limited Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
What would a Met Ball with a Georgian theme look like? That was the inspiration behind Lyn Paolo and Laura Frecon’s costumes for Netflix’s “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.” Shonda Rhimes’ spinoff of the hit Regency-era drama series straddles both that period, when Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) bore the public weight of the Crown, and 56 years earlier, when she (India Amarteifio) married King George (Corey Mylchreest) and adjusted to life as a royal.
For the later timeline, set in 1817, Paolo and Frecon honored the style established by “Bridgerton” costume designer Ellen Mirojnick: high-waisted, fluid gowns influenced by ancient Greece and Rome. For the 1761-set portion, they went back to the conical shape, when women were tightly cinched...

This Star Trek: Picard article contains spoilers.
Star Trek: Picard season 3 is now halfway through its daring new story. And like previous installments, “Imposters” does not shy away from the preexisting Star Trek universe. Connections to existing canon run very deep in an hour that not only brings back a surprise The Next Generation alum but also deepens lore from Deep Space Nine.
From a very familiar face from the past to some classic sound effects and more, “Imposters” keeps the easter eggs coming at warp speed. Here are the best callbacks and deep cuts we found in the episode:
Classic “Bridge Sounds”
The episode begins with what sounds like the 1960s classic Enterprise bridge beeps and boops. One might think this is out of place for the 25th century starships of Picard, but showrunner Terry Matalas has clarified that the Starfleet of this era is in a retro period when it comes to design.

The spark for “Home Front,” an original play running through Feb. 19 at Burbank’s Victory Theatre Center, came 25 years ago when the first scene was written as part of a playwriting-focused benefit event.
Warren Leight, the Tony-winning writer (“Side Man”) and seasoned showrunner (“Law & Order: Svu”), couldn’t get the pages he’d written about an interracial love story out of his head. A widowed young white woman and a Black Navy officer fall in love after meeting in Times Square on V-j day as World War II ends and a new socioeconomic era dawns.
“It lingered,” Leight told Variety. “It was a romantic scene of infinite possibility.”
It would take three more decades, the loss of his uncle and a global pandemic for Leight to see the story come to fruition in its first full-scale production.

Every month, without fanfare, numerous titles are removed from the streamer.
This means that, should something be on your watchlist, it will vanish until it’s added again.
Netflix doesn’t publicise the titles it will remove – and users will only be alerted to something’s imminent removal if they happen to select the title in question.
But, with help from the team at What’s on Netflix, we’ve compiled the full list – and you can find the compilation of everything being added this month here.

The premiere of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" season 3 arrived on Paramount+ today, which is exciting twofold for Trekkies. Not only is one of the better "Trek" shows back, but "Lower Decks" in particular gives detail-obsessed nerds a chance to take out their notepads and go reference hunting. The "Lower Decks" writers clearly know "Star Trek" quite well, and their references from previous episodes run from the obvious to the downright oblique. One needs to look closely to see some of the clever in-jokes snuck into the background.
These kinds of references are cute, yes, but it's worth noting that callbacks and canonical mapping have long been a "Star Trek" birthright. In terms of sci-fi TV, the notion of a larger, expanded universe that is operating somewhere far beyond the events of the central show -- a universe that can be periodically visited -- is something that "Star Trek" helped pioneer.

Think this year’s outstanding TV movie category is a bit weird? It’s always been a category with an identity problem. Flash back for a moment to 1972, the year that the ABC TV movie “Brian’s Song” won five Emmys. “Brian’s Song” is considered one of the seminal TV movies of all time, a tear-jerker starring James Caan and Billy Dee Williams about Chicago Bears player Brian Piccolo (Caan), who discovered he had cancer soon after turning pro.
Nominated for 11 Emmys overall, “Brian’s Song” was so popular, and so successful, that it helped put the ABC “Movie of the Week,” as the franchise was called, front and center — cementing the TV movie as a network staple. The “movie of the week” idea was so groundbreaking that the entire industry continued to call TV movies “MOWs” long after ABC had ditched the name.
But there was no TV movie category then,...

The clock is ticking on a number of noteworthy titles leaving Netflix this month.
Below, we’ve assembled a complete list of everything leaving Netflix in January 2022, and it includes quite a few films you may want to prioritize on your watchlist. Leaving Jan. 6 is “The Green Knight” filmmaker David Lowery’s quietly mesmerizing drama “A Ghost Story” starring Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara. Also leaving on Jan. 6 is Illumination Entertainment’s animated retelling of “The Lorax,” while Jan. 5 marks the exit date of all five seasons of the Matt LeBlanc comedy series “Episodes.”
But the highest profile departure this month is all five films in the “Twilight” franchise, which are due to leave the streaming service on Jan. 15.
Meanwhile, if you’re looking for other films to check out before they depart, the Wachowskis’ epic “Cloud Atlas” and Martin Scorsese’s Leonardo DiCaprio-fronted psychological thriller “Shutter Island” both leave Jan.

"We don't need protection." Mubi has unveiled an official US trailer for the African drama Lingui: The Sacred Bonds, which originally premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, playing in the main competition. The film is the latest by an award-winning filmmaker from Chad named Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, best known for his other films Our Father, Dry Season, A Screaming Man, Grigris, and A Season in France. Amina, a practicing Muslim, lives with her daughter, 15-year-old Maria. When Amina learns Maria is pregnant and wants to abort the child, they face an impossible situation in a country where abortion is legally and morally condemned. The cast features Achouackh Abakar, Rihane Khalil Alio, Youssouf Djaoro, Briya Gomdigue, and Hadje Fatime N'Goua. This earned great reviews at festivals, saying "Haroun takes a quiet, meditative approach to storytelling." If you're into slow cinema this is for you. Here's the US trailer (+ poster...
