In a decisive win for the Autobots after being stuck on autopilot for years, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts opened to a promising $60.5 million at the domestic box office, more than enough to topple popular holdover Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and win the crowded summer weekend.
Rise of the Beasts — which successfully revives the Hasbro toy-to-movie franchise after several fits and starts — landed on the high end of expectations. While reviews have been mixed, the Paramount and Skydance pic earned an A- CinemaScore from audiences and excellent PostTrak scores.
Younger adults made up the majority of ticket buyers, with 56 percent between ages 18-34, including 34 percent between 18-24, according to PostTrak. The male-skewing film is playing to an ethnically diverse audience (Latino, 32 percent; white, 31 percent; Black, 21 percent; and Asian/Other, 16 percent).
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts also did sizeable business overseas, earning $110 million for an early global roar of $170.5 million.

What superhero fatigue? “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” blasted past projections and opened to a huge $120 million. The animated multiverse epic has already earned over $230 million worldwide in less than a week of release. With the “Spider-Verse” sequel off to a massive start and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” about to cross $800 million worldwide, it appears comic book movies are back on track after box office disappointments like “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “Shazam: Fury of the Gods.”
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, “Spider-Verse” producers and writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller said “superhero fatigue” is not to blame for certain comic book movies falling below expectations.
“I don’t believe it’s super superhero fatigue, I believe it’s ‘a movie that feels like a movie I’ve seen a dozen times before’ fatigue,” Miller said. “If you’re using the same story structure and the...

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 marks the conclusion of James Gunn‘s trilogy, which first aired back in 2014. The third movie came with many surprises. After a definitive statement, Gunn still assured fans that they’d never see the original Guardians lineup reunite beyond Vol. 3. With this revelation, the future of the rag-tag gang remains uncertain. Some characters may potentially continue their cosmic adventures, while others may have reached the end of their narrative arcs. The finality of Gunn’s statement raises...

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (Sony) is this summer’s first movie to exceed expectations and not a moment too soon, as the season’s total lags behind 2022. With $120.5 million, Sony’s animated Marvel sequel has grossed 60 percent of the 2018 original. That’s double what advance tracking indicated just over a week ago.
One reason was a terrific critical response, with an 87 Metacritic score that stands as the best for a wide studio release since “Little Women” in December 2019. It opened the same day as “Past Lives” (A24), which has the year’s best Metacritic score of 92 and now stands as the second-best specialized per-theater average of over $58,000, grossing $232,266 in four New York/Los Angeles theaters..
“Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3” and “The Little Mermaid” saw respectable debuts that didn’t reach the heights of their precedents, but “Spider-Verse” had additional advantages.

After it seemed like studios would have to learn to make do without the box office boost provided by Chinese releases, one of Hollywood's most vital foreign markets now appears to be back in the cards for one of the industry's biggest and most powerhouse franchises.
Many box office prognosticators sounded the alarm bells during a lengthy dry spell between 2019 and 2023, which featured no Marvel Studios films receiving crucial distribution in the largest foreign market on Earth. Things finally changed when both "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" and "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" secured releases in China in recent months, opening up another important revenue stream from a nation with well over a billion residents and the most amount of movie theaters of any nation in the world. Now, that streak looks to continue with Marvel's next highly-anticipated production: the James Gunn-directed "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3."

In another sign of the return to China for Marvel after a long drought, Disney/Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been set for a day-and-date release on May 5. The James Gunn-directed finale in the series is due to hit North American cinemas that same day while international rollout will begin on May 3. (Check out the new China poster below.)
This marks the third Marvel title to secure a theatrical release in China following a three-and-a-half year period during which no movies featuring a Marvel character gained entry to the world’s second largest box office market. Last month, Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania became the first titles in since Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: Far From Home in June 2019, and Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame in April that same year.

DC Studios film boss James Gunn didn’t have to look very far to find a filmmaker for the new Superman movie the Warner Bros. Discovery production company is set to release in 2025. Gunn revealed on Wednesday that he’ll make the film, currently titled “Superman: Legacy,” his next project as a director. Gunn was already writing the “Superman: Legacy” screenplay.
“Yes, I’m directing ‘Superman: Legacy’ to be released on July 11, 2025. My brother Matt told me when he saw the release date he started to cry. I asked him why. He said, ‘Dude, it’s Dad’s birthday.’ I hadn’t realized,” Gunn wrote on Twitter. “I lost my Dad almost three years ago. He was my best friend. He didn’t understand me as a kid, but he supported my love of comics and my love of film and I wouldn’t be making this movie now without him.

When walking out of James Gunn's 2014 film "Guardians of the Galaxy," the 10th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this author heard several other audiences members talking about the film's post-credits stinger. In the epilogue, the vaguely villainous Collector (Benicio Del Toro) sat destitute among the ruins of his collection or rare cosmic antiquities. Only a few of his beloved baubles has survived a cosmic blast, including a dog from Earth. The dog, wearing a Soviet space suit, was clearly salvaged from the 1960s Russian space program wherein canines were sent up in rockets to test their safety. The dog in "Guardians" is not Laika, but a fictional dog named Cosmo. The Collector had been keeping it in a cage on a distant planet for decades.
As Cosmo gives the Collector a sympathetic lick, a voice from off-screen (Seth Green) immediately points out how gross the dog is. A...

The behind the scenes drama of the MCU usually stays behind the scenes, but one of the most dramatic talent exits from Marvel’s Cinematic Universe happened in public.
In 2018, director James Gunn was fired from the helm of the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie after some past unpleasant tweets were unearthed online by conservative commentators. Walt Disney chairman Alan F. Horn stated that the “offensive attitudes and statements” on Gunn’s Twitter feed were “indefensible” and “inconsistent” with the studio’s values, while Gunn said he took “full responsibility” for the way he conducted himself in the past.
The Guardians cast wasted no time in jumping to Gunn’s defense, and Marvel fans signed an online petition asking for him to be reinstated. Marvel Studios also began trying to find a way for him to be rehired as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s director. Eventually, he was.
