Was a fun family friendly movie.
rdrawes7 April 2023
I don't normally review movies but thought the bad reviews was pretty unjustified. So figured I would do one.

First off, I quite liked the visuals of the film, you could tell they put a lot of work into the sets they used. Was is Avatar levels of good? Certainly not, but nonetheless was certainly good. Had quite colourful visuals and wasn't distracting in the way some newer cgi movies can be.

The voice acting I thought was quite good. Especially the two leads, they conveyed emotion quite well, which can be challenging for some voice actors. They knew the sort of story they wanted to tell and I think they did wonderfully.

After reading a few reviews it seems like many didn't even watch the movie. No mummies? There was plenty! They.even explain and show off the fact that they use magic to hide their undeadness.. Is even a plot point the villain hopes to use. Which upon thinking about it, would you want to spend literally thousands of years looking at the sunken and rotting face of your neighbours, kids or even significant other? Probably not right?

But it seems some couldn't even figure that part out when it is clearly shown in the movie.

Overall I thought the movie was quite good. It was fun and had a few funny moments. Was it perhaps for me? Certainly not, but it is my kids that is the audience after all. Which for me in the end, is all that matters. If my kids have fun.

"Mummies" was actually a good movie... Not what I was expecting!
jayridders2 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
You know, when I first saw the trailer for this movie, I had my doubts. Warner Bros. Discovery has made some petty decisions ever since their merger; removing Cartoon Network shows from HBO Max (animation is art, animation is cinema), delaying the release dates of several movies, Velma... But "Mummies," wow! What a surprise from WBD!

This film began blowing up on animation channels across YouTube, like KinoCheck, and upon seeing those videos, I thought to myself, "What's so special about this Spanish animated movie, anyway? Is it because it's got Sean Bean in a small, supporting role, or is it just another attempt by big-shot corporations telling people that animation is 'kids' stuff?'" But after watching it for the first time, I was very impressed with what these Spaniards did.

The animation is pretty good. It's very reminiscent of an ESMA short mixed with a 2010s DreamWorks Animation film like Puss in Boots or How to Train Your Dragon 2. All I gotta say is, nicely done!

The plot is very creative. The movie follows three Egyptian mummies travelling to the modern human world in search of a royal wedding ring stolen from an eager archeologist. Hilarity ensues as they try to learn how the modern world works. One thing I appreciate about the storyline is that it doesn't try too hard to be "hip" and "cool." No BTS or Among Us references, no unneeded internet celebrity cameos like Ninja, Dream, or DanTDM, no TikTok trends, none of that. All I can say to these writers is, thank you for staying away from these modern trends. The idea of an exclusive afterlife populated by Egyptian mummies is one of the most creative concepts ever made for one of these "Fish Out of Water" stories.

The characters are quite likeable in a similar fashion to Fly, Stella and Chuck from one of my all-time favorite animated movies, "Help! I'm a Fish!" Thut is an awkward and daunted ex-charioteer, who, after an incident with the fire bird Phoenix, is chosen to marry Princess Nefer. Nefer may seem like the typical "Disney Princess clone" in non-Disney movies, but she's actually pretty likeable. She just wants to make her own decisions and live her life, instead of the cliched "I want more." Thut's brother, Sekhem, is a fun-loving kid who looks up to his brother's hidden bravery and often encourages him to face his fears. Sekhem is also shown to be a fast-learner as well, adapting to the modern human world quicker than Nefer and Thut. The development these characters go through is nicely executed. Nefer and Thut don't have feelings for each other and both have a fear of commitment. As they venture out into the modern world, though, they start to get close to each other, and eventually, they accept each other's hands in marriage.

Now, a lot of good movies tend to have their flaws, and I would like to list them out for you. For instance, it has a couple of musical numbers, which, despite being sung by singers with great voices, seem out of place. Another flaw I would like to posit would have to be a few animation errors (I think). In one scene, when Thut leaves Nefer at the royal palace, a shot shows Nefer's mother standing next to her, but in the next two shots, she suddenly moves without any animation. This may have been something the animators forgot to fix, but I'll let it slide. There's also a little bit of rude humor, such as Nefer's snoring and farting being pointed out by Thut in one scene. Thankfully, this humor wasn't abused throughout the film, and I have to say, that move was pretty smart.

This film, in a similar fashion to the original Luc Besson cut of Arthur and the Minimoys, isn't well known in the US, save for a few limited screenings. For a movie that's quite obscure in my home country, it's actually pretty good. Kudos to the Spaniards for pulling the old "Besson movie" and making a likeable animated movie. By the time this comes out on home video in the US, feel free to check it out (or maybe just use KissCartoon if you want to see it now).

Bland, but SOMEHOW not too bad
jnsbkkr28 March 2023
I saw this movie come aorund in my local movie theatre and It thought; "let's watch that. It can't be too bad?" Yet, I was surprised, the movie does follow a generic plotline if you ask me, but the humor in this movie landed well with me. Which kind of surprised me, because I usually don't like the humor in movies like this. The actress playing Nefer was also a surprisingly good singer. Better than I was expecting from someone who doesn't really show up on mything on IMDb. I'd like to see/hear more of her. The 3rd act did somehow surprise me.

To concluse this review: it's a generic movie with CGI animation that cut corners in a few places(if you see them, you WILL notice it), but overall, it's a decent watch. Not too bad to put on for the kids and who knows, you might even like it yourself?

why to bad reviews and low rating
kaefab28 March 2023
Why to bad reviews and low rating, i cannot believe the low rating and low score people are giving this movie.

I really liked it, it was pure fun, why should an animation movie have a lesson for kids i must ask cannot it be great fun to watch.

There are no mummies in the movie the title might sound confusing but its not really it's a parallel world between the dead of egypt and the real world we live in today.

The voice acting is good the animation stands out as a normal production and the story is normal.

Maybe with for this movie on dvd or to rent on a streaming service but please don't pass it buy because if a few bad ratings it well worth it and fun.

Good basic kids film
threecouplesfreedfilm12 April 2023
Don't expect to much from this film. Shrek it is certainly not, its Just a good all round kids movie. Casting is good, performances are generally solid, and the storyline was entertaining enough to keep my 7 yr focused and engaged from beginning to end.

Lastly, Thankfully the movie was free of the current usual, overtly political agenda nonsense that's been filling our screens over the past few years. Thank you Warner for having produced a film that at its heart is a simple uncomplicated kids movie that isn't out to beat the hell out of the audience by force feeding them social political agenda's that aren't appropriate in a kids film.

No mummies. Dumb story, boring hectic pace but nice visuals
vostf29 January 2023
Some time ago I had met writers who thought it was easy to put together an engaging family story: put together some contemporary artefacts, mix that with a different, more serious theme that you will take on tongue in cheek, and voilà. Mummies' producer-writer does just that, he tells us the dumb story of Egyptians living 2500 years ago but just like us today. One anachronistic gag is fun, but anachronism galore is a bore, it is so easy, so lazy. Basically you could do the same jokes with the Roman Empire (sounds like exclusive Astérix turf), the Middle Ages, Shakespeare...

Hence the main characters are lame - spoilt - youngsters not pleased with the choices Society is making for them. In case it had too much potential they added a stock cardboard villain with two hopelessly dumb and interchangeable assistants (resulting in negative comical value).

So there is nothing engaging, all is just about rushing to the next task for our small-time heroes. Recreating Pharaos' Egypt for this just feels like a huge waste of time and energy, and you can feel dejected that the producer and people in Brussels (MEDIA) thought this drivel sounded good enough for kids and their parents.

In the end there are no mummies whatsoever, only lots of lame jokes (most of which are meant for adults...) that won't go away like those antique characters (and pets) who happen to dress with mummy bandages.

$12 million budget
JCinHB24 April 2023
OK... I watched this movie not knowing anything about it.

So are there some glaring issues, yea, but then once I heard about the fact this movie was made for $12 million and not $200 MILLION like sooooo many of todays movies, I gave it a TON more credit.

Its a typical kids movie, 'something happens, they go on an adventure to solve the issue, everyone is happy at the end'.

There is one issue that needs correcting, but with a $12 million budget, I can let it slide and for 4-9 yr old kids, they probably wouldn't notice anyways.

A decent non Woke movie that you can enjoy with the kids. I rate movies starting at a 5 and go UP or DOWN from there. This is a solid 5.5 out of 10.

Grab the popcorn and enjoy 90 minutes of family fun.

Simple, but entertaining
kolozsvarinorbi191 April 2023
Mummies" is a fun and entertaining animated film that is perfect for a family movie night. The plot is simple and easy to follow, making it ideal for young children. The animation is top-notch, with vibrant colors and engaging visuals that will keep viewers of all ages entertained. The characters are original and likable, with catchy songs that will have viewers tapping their toes and humming along. The world building is also creative, with a unique take on the concept of mummies that is sure to delight audiences.

However, while the world building is inventive, it is also somewhat lacking in logic. Many aspects of the film are left unexplained, leaving viewers with unanswered questions. Additionally, while the characters are enjoyable, they lack the depth and complexity that would make them truly memorable. As a result, "Mummies" is an enjoyable film, but not particularly groundbreaking or memorable.

Messy Mummy movie without Mummies(?)
kman924 February 2023
Went to see this movie with my kids. Yes I know it's a kids movie, but. It started with a Roman style chariot race and went downhill from there. (Yes, I'm aware that of course the Egyptians had chariots, but I haven't seen any evidence of them raving around a colesseum like stadium).

The thing that I found extremely unnecessary (this is my first review - I wanted to warn parents about this theme) was the main character Thut repeating throughout the movie about the threat (by the Pharoah) of having his tongue and eye's removed if he didn't marry the princess. Once, I would have let go, but he kept saying it. It's a kids movie! This horrific concept isn't something they should be exposed to - even if it just being talked about. As I said - he KEEPS saying it!

The Egyptian theme had lots of typical stereotypes, but seemed all over the place.

They had a star gate, which seemed to be a ripoff from the 90's movie Stargate Thut has an English accent. I get that for simplicity the movie was made in English, but still, put a bit of effort in.

There was much more. Why is there a Nickelback song?

I just wish they could have put more effort in to creating an environment that might have actually shown kids some themes about Ancient Egypt, so they might be interested in learning about the amazing culture and history.

Overall, it's a pretty forgettable movie.

Oh yeah, where are the Mummies?

Funny and enjoyable 9/10
rena-7521929 March 2023
You should give this movie a try and don't mind the bad ratings. It has romance, it has entertainment and good music. The villain is funny too: some momma's boy archeologist in his 50s who tries to become famous by capturing mummies.

The kids should rate this movie, not the parents. We can clearly see that the parents give low rating for no good reason. I read a review where someone gave 1/10 for the only fact that the voice acting was bad. The voice acting was not bad at all. You can clearly understand and hear what they are saying. It's an animated movie for kids. It had humor and there is no swearing.

This is a good animation about how the UK has stolen many artifacts from Egypt!
mxgagat14 August 2023
It's nice that the film about british people stealing Egyptian artefacts has been made. People and especially children have to know about that! There are a few reasons for this. First, the British government justified the looting of Egyptian artifacts by claiming that they were preserving them from neglect and destruction. They argued that the Egyptians were not capable of caring for their own heritage, and that the British were doing them a favour by taking the artefacts to museums in Britain, where they would be safe and accessible to scholars and the public.... British public! The UK should return these artifacts to Egypt.

A nice and fun Spanish animated film set in ancient Egypt
ma-cortes22 October 2023
The movie begins a long, long time ago in the secret city of mummies, whose protagonist Thut is dedicated to signing autographs from 5 to 7. Thut was previously a great charioteer but he died due to the evil arts of some racing opponents and he was forced to become a mummy. Nowadays he lives as a simple mummy, however, his peaceful world falls apart when the phoenix bird marks him as the husband of Princess Nefer, who is as little interested in marriage as Thut himself. As if that weren't enough trouble, an ambitious archaeologist, Lord Carnaby, is about to discover the secret underground world of mummies and things get worse when he finds the Egyptian wedding ring. Then, by order of the pharaoh, Princess Nefer must marry Thut, the former charioteer. No one wants marriage; Nefer because he craves freedom, and Thut because he is allergic to marriage. But the designs of the gods are irrevocable: Thut must marry Nefer and guard the royal ring that the Pharaoh has given him. Thut must go to the human world to retrieve it. He is accompanied by Sekhem, his 12-year-old brother, with his pet crocodile, and Nefer. Together they will live a great adventure in modern London and discover something that was not in their plans: falling in love. Eventually a romance emerges with the typical repulsion-attraction. Discover a new world !.

Adventures, humor, fantasy and action in this 3D cartoon film, this is a blockbuster movie that younger people will like. There is continuous non-stop entertainment with frenetic action, good staging and adventures of all kinds in which our three protagonists: Thut, his younger brother, the princess and a pet crocodile find themselves immersed in present-day London with the consequent risks that a modern metropolis that this represents. He film is technically acceptable with a colorful pop approach accentuated by contrasts of time and space. The story, with basic positive messages, action enough and continous amusement, but it does not stand out for its inventiveness in humor, originality or the keys it handles. As the director Jesús Garcia Galocha himself explains, "Momias" takes us on an adventure where love prevails over everything else, although everything else is equally exciting. Here we have the parallel worlds, the chance of destiny, a love story, a lot of characters out of context with anachronisms, the valuable object as a macguffin, the rebellion of the teenager who wants to make her decisions, the overcoming of traumas of the apparently brave and determined hero.

There's a good and lively musical score by the presitigious Fernando Velazquez, adding some catching songs, such as: ¨Na Vandaag¨ performed by Stefania and ¨Walk Like an Egyptian¨ performed by The Bangles and Nickleback. The film was well directed by Juan Jesús Garcia Galocha, although it has some boring moments. Galocha was the creative director of the first two installments of ¨Tadeo Jones¨ and made the acclaimed animated short ¨Cuerdas¨. Rating: 6/10. A film especially aimed at little ones and lovers of animated action.

Thut X Nefer Are Cute!
TharsheyN16 May 2023
Mummies is an animated film following 3 mummies who journey to the surface/human world to retrieve the royal ring. Along the way they encounter obstacles that only working together will they be able to overcome. Which is harder then it seems as Thut and Nefer do not want to marry each other.

Story wise it's pretty simple thanks to a linear tale with an ending even a new born baby could see coming from a mile away. That said it is still interesting enough to entertain you, though there are no twists or turns to spice things up a bit. Ending as I said was very predictable, but it's the ending I wanted and if they had changed it for whatever reason. Say for example to spice things up I would be rating the movie a star lower, as I'm a romantic and once I started to ship Nefer and Thut I wanted them to be endgame.

Casting wise the voice acting was superb! Eleanor Tomlinson played Nefer and Joe Thomas brought Thut to life. Sean Bean played the Pharaoh and somehow his character did not die so good stuff there!

Song wise, the movie was nothing special. I actually got rather annoyed with the songs in the movie when I just wanted to see the rather minimal plot move along.

VFX and SFX are good, animation looks great and nothing wrong there.

Overall I give the movie a 6/10 as it was fun to watch but very predictable and not something I'd watch again anytime soon.

Not that good, nice art and design
hannahwildish8 February 2023
Well this film was not that good, pretty to look at and pretty boring as well. I thought it might have had some nice horror elements given the title, but it's just a boring flat comedy. It could have used such a wide history of Mummy films going back to Universal's black and white efforts with Bris Karloff, then done a mash up with other Mummy films including the one from the nineties with Brendan Fraser, and even the one with Tom Cruise, but this is more about spoiled and entitled kids. And I thought the villain was just pulled out of a stock standard box of characters, oh well it is nice and colourful to look at.

Not much drama, but fun.
rjaylordmanus11 July 2023
I was quite hesitant to watch this at first, even halfway through the film, but then it grew on me. It throwbacks the classic kids' movies in the past. Although it cannot be compared to the emotion and drama of pixar animated films, this one sticks to the simple storyline but does it will enough to entertain me. I give it a rating of 7 because I feel that the story is a little rushed. Even though things happen fast this film, more time for adventure is given to the characters. Another thing that I love about this film is the choice of popular songs for the soundtrack as it as to the nostalgia. Overall, I like it. It does not have much drama but it is indeed fun.

Worst movie ever
Shin13376 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The worst animated movie I've ever watched.

I tried to sleep but the volume was too loud.

Nothing in the movie made sense. Mummies from ancient egypt speaking modern day english in London? Sure why not

The plot (what plot, there wasn't any explanation.. just a series of events) was predictable and full of stereotypes.

There wasn't even one funny joke. The bad guy was cliche and not even his sidekicks were as funny as they tried to be.

The characters are obnoxious and just empty.

A truly sad metaphor of today's world that teaches the children that marriage is dumb and life of study, hard work and dedication means nothing because you only need to be lucky and become a pop star

And given from amount of laughs at the movie theater I can tell that even the children did not appreciate this piece of garbage.

The baby crocodile was cute tho.

Hathor's Ring
nogodnomasters24 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is a Warner Brothers princess musical so don't look for the mass Disney marketing. Thut races chariots and loses his nerve when he loses a wheel. He quits racing. Nefer is a princess and it is time for her to get married. Lacking brothers, the phoenix will select her husband. They have all died and live in the Egyptian after life as immortals. The bird selects Thut who now holds Hathor's wedding ring. If he loses the ring, things begin to look like the ending of a Thomas Tryon novel. Their land of the dead is entered by that of the living which manages to take one thing. Thut along with his brother and pet croc enter the upper world to retrieve the ring from what appears to be an Indian Jones scene. Nefer joins them. Nefer wants to sing more than anything in the world, a thing she gets to do in the live world.

The film was dubbed in English. It was a fun family film.

Meh at best.
gravel41 April 2023
Wouldn't recommend to anyone. The plot is basic and predictable, the characters are annoying and shallow and the comedy is just not there either. The animal sidekick adds no value of the film and isn't even that cute. The writing isn't the worst i've seen, but definitely not great. The animation was mediocre and the voice acting was sloppy at parts. The characters designs are alright. There were quite afew plot holes which means the movie didn't make sense in some parts. There was also no point to the film, the ending was quite unsatisfying. At least it was a bit interesting, I didn't find myself bored or falling asleep.

Good for Kids, but Terrible Voice Acting
blackshadows5031 March 2023
There's nothing wrong with the visuals, and the basic story is fine for kids, but the dialogue and the English voice acting are atrocious (apart from Sean Bean). The problem is that it looks like its being aimed at older kids, but it sounds like its aimed at infants. The two main characters are the worst offenders, but especially the voice actor for Thut. If it was redubbed with a better cast and with rewritten lines, it would be much better. It has some funny moments, especially the Martinez/Gimenez Ecce Homo reference, but as it is there is nothing remarkable about it which is a shame because it could have had a lot of potential.

How can I explain
nicolasmaczk4 April 2023
The movie starts great and shows its ambitions right from the starts, but, then, there's a drop of quality in the writing, then another in the directing shortly after, then in the editing, then in the visuals. And it ends up like many other cheap 3D movie, without sparks, real humor, or appealing visuals. You really can feel the gradual drop in quality over the movie and I can't shake off the feeling that something had happened in the middle of the making and they had to squeeze out whatever they had to satisfy a deadline or just to finish the film. It kind of makes me feel sad for the ones who worked on the project, it was promising.

Warning: Spoilers
I went today to the movie with my two kids 6yrs old & 8yrs old. Unfortunately, just a waste of money and time.

I don't see a meaning of this kind of movie for the kids. No learning lessons, no value added.

I wish they stop showing the movie in cinemas. Also. There are unappropriate language for little kids.

As someone from the gulf, I don't see we are the right audience for the film. Disappointed with the contents and concept of mummies film.

Looking forward to seeing movies that I would say I am going to watch this movie again. I am sure you can come with super better ideas.

After all, thank you for your effort anyway.

Excellent Storyline
amirgamal-8006810 May 2023
An excellent dramatic plot...a wonderful sequence of events by Thoth and Nefer...a different and varied performance by Sekhem and Denis. Wonderful sound effects.. The graphics were consistent and not vulgar.. The story helps adults and children to understand the ancient Egyptian civilization away from lies and allegations in a smooth and simplified manner. The visual effects were consistent with the auditory effects, and the script was interesting, as you do not feel the time of the movie.

This film is a unique and integrated piece of art.. With such films, cinema becomes a cultural and dramatic beacon that is more than wonderful.

One of the youngsters...
paul_haakonsen27 March 2023
I sat down to watch the 2023 Animated movie "Mummies" with my son. I had actually not heard about the movie prior to watching it, so I had no idea what I was in for here. But I figured I would give it a fair chance.

Writers Jordi Gasull and Javier López Barreira put together a fair enough script for the movie. However, I have to say that my son enjoyed the movie way more than I did. So on that account, then "Mummies" is definintely something for the younger audience. The storyline just never really caught my interest, and the characters were sort of flat.

The art style in "Mummies" was interesting and good, as was the animation itself. But then again, I've always had a fascination with all things ancient Egyptian. And I will say the attention to detail and the concept of the eqyptian setting was fun and interesting enough to make the animated movie watchable for me.

I wasn't familiar with the voices that brought life to the animated characters on the screen. But they did have a fair enough cast ensemble of voice actors here.

Having sat through director Juan Jesús García Galocha's 2023 animated movie "Mummies", I can check it off the list, though I have to say that I am not returning to watch it a second time.

My rating of "Mummies" lands on a four out of ten stars.

When a committee designs a movie....
pringlepowell13 April 2023
A Pharoah from deepest Sheffield, and a remaining cast plucked from the finest housing estates in Buckinghamshire and surrounding counties.

At the end of production, I wonder who gave the green light and said, "Perfect"? This movie suffers from animation akin to an Xbox cutscene, sound mixing that baffles, voice-acting added some time post-completion, a story that makes absolutely no sense, an awful if predictable ending. Is it a musical or not, as there are a couple of nonsense and forgettable numbers.

Apparently there is now a portal that connects ancient Egypt of 3000 years ago and present day. Nobody knows how it got there, nobody tells you, and is now open whenever the 'Mummies' want to use it.

Awful, especially compared to such offerings as Puss in Boots 2 recently...

Torture
enorean8 August 2023
Forget water boarding, this movie is pure torture. How did this possibly get greenlit? It's as if the producer was dared to make a movie entirely out of padding. From the white Egyptians with straight hair who speak in British accents, to the comically ( not in a good way) overly overplayed groan inducing tropes; this film is a hard pass. The longer you watch it the whiter the Egyptians get - by the time you get to the credits they actually have blond hair - no joke. The only black people in the film are stage actors pretending to be Egyptians and singing about owning slaves. I wish I was making this up.
