- [military historians have just told Patrick about his father's wartime bravery and leadership]
- Patrick Stewart: It hit me strongly that my father, who up till then had not been much of father figure to his children, was taking on the responsibility of being a father figure to hundreds of men. I came to regard him, as the years went by, as complex. I wonder if perhaps during this period of life he was really quite simple. The picture I am beginning to get is of someone very focused, and not chaotic as sometimes he could be in later life. And I like what I hear and I like how that makes me feel. I have a history for him which is richer than any history I'd had before. And right at the heart of that history is a human being, and I don't think he had been a human being for me before.
