David Frenkel on Claude Lanzmann: "He has like a sixth sense. I think that was maybe the most powerful tool when he was interviewing people during Shoah." Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze
In the second half of my conversation with the producer of Claude Lanzmann's The Last Of The Unjust and The Four Sisters (Les Quatre Soeurs) at the Film Society of Lincoln Center during the New York Film Festival in 2017 David Frenkel shared with me some insight on Ada Lichtman in La Puce Joyeuse (The Merry Flea), Paula Biren in Baluty, Ruth Elias in Le Serment d'Hippocrate (The Hippocratic Oath), and Hanna Marton in L'arche De Noé (Noah's Ark).
The interviews of the four women were conducted by Lanzmann in the 1970s. Each one bringing to light the in-depth testimony of a remarkable woman who survived unspeakable horrors during the Third Reich. Their strength, their dignity and even joyfulness - their embrace of life,...

Jc Chandor with Robert Redford (Our Man), who decides to shave Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze Robert Redford and Bruce Dern in 1974's The Great Gatsby were battling over F Scott Fitzgerald's Daisy Buchanan. At this year's New York, London and Cannes film festivals they battle their demons on land and at sea respectively in Alexander Payne's Nebraska and Jc Chandor's All Is Lost. Another grand ageless man, Shoah director Claude Lanzmann, gives us a powerful look at The Last Of The Unjust, his film about Theresienstadt Elder Benjamin Murmelstein, whom he interviewed in Rome in 1975 and whose statements about Adolf Eichmann and the conception of Theresienstadt need to be heard.

Confirming some last minute additions to this year’s lineup, Cannes officials announced some exciting new titles, including (which we predicted) Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive, headlining Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston as impassioned vampires. Also as predicted, Claude Lanzman’s latest Holocaust documentary Le Dernier De Injustes gets an Out of Competition slot, while three titles complete the Un Certain Regard’s lineup.
An intriguing debut (and under the radar addition) from German director Katrin Gebbe, Tore Tanzt, explores a young man’s dangerous relationship with a religious group known as The Jesus Freaks, while Wakolda (read our predictions piece here) a Josef Mengele inspired tale from Argentian director Luciz Puenzo and My Sweet Pepperland (formerly titled Aga – as listed here) from Hiner Saleem, which concerns a police commissioner’s reassignment to a lawless territory on the borders of Turkey, Iraq, and Iran, also will be part...

Cannes Adds Jim Jarmusch's Tilda Swinton-Starring Vampire Tale to Competition Among Other New Titles
Among the many surprises when the announcement of the Cannes Film Festival competition came out last week was the omission of Jim Jarmusch's Tilda Swinton-starring vampire tale "Only Lovers Left Alive" in the competition category -- a film that many pundits predicted would vie for the Palme d'Or. As it turns out, they were right. At a recent press conference, Cannes officials confirmed that the film has been added last-minute to the competition, along with a number of other titles playing in different sections, including Claude Lanzman's latest Holocaust documentary "Le Dernier Des Injustes," playing out of competition. Below find a list of the new films included in the lineup. Completion "Only Lovers Left Alive," Jim Jarmusch Out of Competition "Le Dernier Des Injustes," Claude Lanzmann Un Certain Regard "My Sweet Pepperland," Hiner Saleem "Tore Tanzt," Katrin Gebbe "Wakolda," Lucia Puenzo...

Oh hell yes. As if the Cannes Film Festival lineup this year wasn't stellar enough with Nicolas Winding Refn's "Only God Forgives," the Coens' "Inside Llewyn Davis," James Gray's "The Immigrant," Alexander Payne's "Nebraska" and more all headed to the south of France, now one more title we had predicted would make it in -- and were bummed not to see in the initial announcement -- is coming. Jim Jarmusch's "Only Lovers Left Alive" has been added to the competition slate at Cannes. Damn. Starring Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, Mia Wasikowska, Anton Yelchin and Tom Hiddleston, the film follows Adam, an underground musician who reunites with his centuries long lover Eve (Swinton), but finds their relationship interrupted by her wild sister, Ava (Wasikowska). And oh yeah, they're vampires. So yes, we're super excited for this one. Also being added to Cannes: Claude Lanzmann’s "Le Dernier Des Injustes...
