Aims low, falls even deeper
kosmasp14 October 2012
One of the few good things that I can say, is that I luckily did not go to a cinema to watch it. And I wanted to, but when it came out I never had the time to go see it. Which means I saved money (the renting of the disc was far cheaper), but on the other hand I did not save myself from a dreading annoying experience.

People who know the singer Sasha (german Star of sorts), will understand where this is going, when I state that he was by far the best "actor" in this mess. A movie that tries to capture the found footage craze (in the most horrible way you can imagine, that doesn't even make sense, unless it was meant to be shot part found footage, part "normal" filmmaking. But even that is executed poorly at best) with a bit of a Hangover.

The biggest problem is, that it's a lot of build-up, but no real payoff. The movie struggles to find a rhythm, but never does have anything to show for itself. A script filled with ideas that may have sounded good, when they were thought of, but never were realized in a fashion that is slightly funny. If you want found footage that is aiming at Hangover or American Pie style humor, go watch "Project X". For all it's faults, it's way better than this right here. And if you want a real comedy about marriage, either watch "Bridesmaids" (which seems to get ripped off here too, but completely unoriginal and far from funny, which is the one thing the movie keeps in sync throughout -> how bad it is and stays) or go watch "A few best men"! Comedy gold and no holds barred. Avoid this at any cost, unless it is meant as punishment for someone else (but why be so cruel?)

Wortmann hitting rock-bottom

Warning: Spoilers
"Das Hochzeitsvideo" (which means "The Wedding Video") is a German movie from 2012, so this one has its 5th anniversary this year and if you see it, you will probably really wonder why with quality like that director Sönke Wortmann is famous in Germany. Well it mostly has to do with his earlier works and then again the only thing you can really blame him for here is that he agreed to direct it because the camera work is not that bad, but the script (by Gernot Gricksch) is a complete mess really from start to finish of these slightly under 1.5 hours. It is basically the outcome you'd imagine if you hear about the German approach to "The Hangover" gone completely wrong. What was the worst thing here. The man's best friend and best man? The ridiculous ending scene at the church? The ex-boyfriend porn actor? The missing ring? The rushed-in drama where they made it look as if the wedding is really in danger? It is totally impossible to mention just one. The film never manages to be funny at all, has nothing to do with reality and has several characters that are written over the top in the most vomit-inducing way one could imagine. The film is mildly known because of Wortmann's involvement, but it probably would have been mostly forgotten without him. Also the amateur wedding video idea clearly limits him in terms of any chance to save the film. Actors probably realized what mess this was turning into and the consequence is that even the lead characters are portrayed by people that not even film buffs like myself have heard of. Obviously nobody really in the cast here has the talent to elevate the horrible material, but probably Oscar winners would have failed there too. Pop singer Sasha is the only famous face in here playing himself as a less inspired version of Matt LeBlanc on Episodes that gets old as quickly as everything else about this movie. A definite contender for weakest career effort for everybody involved with this project. The best thing about it? That it did not run for 100 minutes or even longer. Definitely skip this one.
