If any competitive reality series merits a Halloween season finale, it's "Face Off."
The Syfy program is all about horror makeup, so the traditional night for macabre disguises couldn't be better timing for the show's Season 3 winner to be declared. More is involved, since host McKenzie Westmore -- who hails from a legendary family of Hollywood makeup artists -- will preside over the finale live (in the Eastern half of the country; on tape delay elsewhere) for the first time Wednesday, Oct. 31. And in another first, viewers can decide who wins by voting after the previous night's episode.
"Face Off" has redefined the television image of Westmore, previously best-known as heroine Sheridan Crane Lopez-Fitzgerald on the now-defunct NBC daytime serial "Passions." Unlike the first two "Face Off" seasons, she's had a break between the weekly episodes and the finale, which she deems "really interesting. We'll see how things have progressed for the people,...

We know that some of our readers are fans of the Syfy make-up competition series, Face Off, and wanted to pass on the news that the series has officially been renewed for a fourth season:
Syfy has renewed its critically acclaimed hit competition series Face Off for a fourth season, it was announced today by Mark Stern, President, Original Content, Syfy and Co-Head, Original Content, Universal Cable Productions. Slated for a 2013 premiere, notable guest appearances on tap for season four include Bryan Singer and Lightstorm’s Jon Landau. Dwight D. Smith, Michael Agbabian and Derek Atherton of Mission Control Media will return as executive producers.
“Face Off has proven itself as a quality, signature series for Syfy,” said Stern. “The success the series has achieved in its three seasons – from both a critical and ratings standpoint — establishes a strong foundation as we continue to build the momentum for season four.

This is terrific news. Syfy‘s special effects makeup artist competition Face Off is one of the best competition shows currently on TV. Currently in its third season, Syfy has now picked it up for a fourth. Lacking most of the over-hyped drama of some other competition series, Face Off poses interesting weekly challenges and teaches us a great deal about the art of effects makeup. Plus it looks cool.

Last year, Syfy introduced the competition series Face Off, which pit prosthetic makeup artists against one another in weekly challenges leading up to a grand prize. Their newest competition show Hot Set, from the same production company, follows the basic formula of Face Off, except instead of weekly prizes and eliminations leading up to a finale, the show brings in two different Hollywood production designers each week to compete head-to-head and create science fiction, fantasy or horror genre movie sets for a $10,000 prize. Both shows have built-in appeal for DVD extras junkies and anyone who
