Fremantle has deepened its relationship with Artists, Writers & Artisans, Inc. (Awa) by making a minority investment in the company.
Fremantle had struck a strategic development deal with Awa Studios, the film and television division of Awa, last year.
Awa is backed by James Murdoch’s Lupa Systems, Sister, and Lightspeed Venture Partners. In 2021, the company established Awa Studios, helmed by Hollywood veteran Zach Studin as president. Marvel alum Axel Alonso serves as co-founder and chief creative officer overseeing editorial output. Matthew Anderson, co-chair and president and Jon Miller, co-founder and co-chair, lead Awa’s executive team.
The two companies have revealed that the first project on the joint development slate after Fremantle taking a stake in Awa is “Devil’s Highway,” a thriller based on the comic series by Benjamin Percy and Brent Schoonover in which a young woman seeks to unravel a sinister mystery hidden in the dark underbelly of the long-haul trucking industry.

Fremantle, the production unit of Bertelsmann-owned TV giant Rtl Group, has made a strategic minority investment in Artists, Writers & Artisans (Awa), an independent developer of stories from creative talent working across graphic fiction, film and television.
James Murdoch’s investment firm Lupa Systems, an existing Awa backer, co-led the new financial injection, which also included new capital from long-term Awa backers and “a number of strategic individual investors with expertise in production, finance, sports, human rights and technology,” the company said. Financial details and the size of the stake weren’t disclosed.
“This investment signifies a deepening of the initial partnership made between Fremantle and Awa in April 2022, which saw the companies come together to collaborate on co-developing a slate of TV projects based on Awa’s rapidly expanding IP library,” the partners said. “Awa Studios, Awa’s film and TV arm, will benefit from Fremantle’s strategic input and investment,...

Lisa Langseth’s play on the corporate and intellectual circles of metropolitan Stockholm is smart, silly fun for grown-ups, offering food for thought along the way. As in her fiction features Pure, Hotell and Euphoria, Lisa Langseth continues to explore sociological and existential themes in the eight episodes of Love & Anarchy, the first Swedish Netflix series based on an original screenplay. The setting is a slightly twisted version of an opulent European metropolis – in this case Stockholm – with a brassy corporate culture, anxiously mincing intellectual circles and outwardly perfect lifestyles flaunted by all players, embellished with cocky jargon, and with every conceivable blemish carefully concealed under a glossy sheen. One such mustard-cutting individual is Sofie Rydman, a hard-nosed business developer with a keen eye for figures and how they relate to creative originality. On paper, she has it all – a picture-perfect home, a pair of choice offspring...

Kathy Bates, welcome back to “American Horror Story”! When FX’s anthology series returns in the fall for Season 8, the award-winning actress will star alongside fellow cast mates Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters, producer Ryan Murphy confirmed to Entertainment Weekly. This marks Bates’ fifth season on “Ahs” following “Coven,” “Freak Show,” “Hotel” and “Roanoke.” Bates didn’t star in last year’s “Cult” because she was otherwise occupied on Netflix’s “Disjointed,” a comedy that has since been canceled. To celebrate Bates’ return to “Ahs,” we want to know which former character You think is her best so far. Vote now in our poll below.

Fox’s 9-1-1 is throwing out the rulebook.
On paper, Ryan Murphy’s newest show has all the ingredients of the tried-and-true formula of a television procedural following the Los Angeles police force, firefighters, dispatchers and first responders. Only after watching the first few minutes do you realize it’s anything but that.
Led by an A-list trifecta with Angela Bassett, Peter Krause and Connie Britton,9-1-1 puts a twist on the classic procedural trope, structuring its stories in a way where viewers follow the relatively separate worlds in which each lead character lives -- Bassett as Detective Athena Grant, Krause as Fire Captain Bobby Nash and Britton as 911 operator Abby Clark -- with the occasional group interaction sprinkled in as the tale necessitates. As executive producer Brad Falchuk, Murphy’s longtime collaborator, tells it, the show’s unique format was the selling point.

After launching her own production company, the aptly named Vikarious Productions, Alicia Vikander’s first project was a reteam with her Pure and Hotell collaborator Lisa Langseth. Euphoria, also starring Eva Green and Charlotte Rampling, follows the journey of two sisters. Following a premiere at Tiff, no U.S. release has been set yet, but it’ll arrive in Sweden in Norway early next year, and now the first teaser has landed.
“Predictably, Vikander is wonderful, believable, and agreeably upset as Ines,” Christopher Schobert said in his review. “This is another fine performance from the star who is often the best thing in flawed dramas like The Danish Girl and The Light Between Oceans. Green is saddled with the drearier role, the “other sister” who is deeply ill. The Casino Royale star is far more effective when she plays a character in control of the situation. In Euphoria, things are beyond her grasp,...

The thought of Alicia Vikander and Eva Green starring in the same movie is enticing enough, but the fact they’re playing sisters in “Euphoria” is almost too amazing to handle. The drama marks the third directorial effort from Lisa Langseth, the Swedish filmmaker who put Vikander on the radar of Hollywood by casting her as the lead in dramas “Pure” and “Hotell.” “Euphoria” marks a coming home of sorts for Vikander, and it should be a knockout.

It’s difficult to know what to make of Lisa Langseth’s Euphoria. At times it seems in the cusp of science fiction. But then… it isn’t. At other points it offers some clumsy attempts at social satire, and even dark humor. Yet when this 2017 Toronto International Film Festival world premiere is finally finished, it is clear that the film is no more than a standard drama. And a relatively weak one, at that.
Considering its stars, then, Euphoria must qualify as a disappointment. On paper, the idea of pairing Oscar winner Alicia Vikander and the always-intriguing Eva Green as estranged sisters is delightful. Vikander made her debut in Langseth’s Pure, and also drew raves in the director’s 2013 Tiff selection Hotell. It may not come as a surprise that Vikander fares best here. She, far more so than Green, develops a complex persona. How could audiences not expect more,...

As part of the groundbreaking Harvard Sensory Ethnography Lab, Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel have established themselves at the forefront of modern documentary filmmaking, most notably with their landmark 2012 film Leviathan. In their second collaboration this year (after somniloquies, which premiered at Berlin), the two seem to be engaging with a more typical documentary subject, though the form of Caniba remains to be seen.

While some might not have a set release — let alone any confirmed festival premiere — most have wrapped production and will likely debut at some point in 2017, so make sure to check back for updates over the next twelve months and beyond. Be sure to keep the following one-hundred films on your radar (with release dates, where applicable). If you want to see how we did with our picks last year (potentially to shame us), head on over here.

Following her Oscar win earlier this year, Alicia Vikander not only picked up a major tentpole role in Tomb Raider, but also launched her own production company, the aptly named Vikarious Productions. It also hasn’t taken long for her to start their first feature as Euphoria kicked off production this month, and the first look has arrived today.
Vikander’s Pure and Hotell collaborator Lisa Langseth is writing and directing the English-language picture, which teams Vikander and Eva Green as “sisters in conflict traveling through Europe towards a mystery destination,” creating a project that the actor-producer calls “full of suffering but also full of joy, and squaring up to very important subject matter.”
Check out the image below (thanks to The Playlist) for the film also starring Charlotte Rampling, Charles Dance, Adrian Lester, and Mark Stanley.
Shooting in Bavaria and Munich, Euphoria will likely premiere in 2017.

The intensity of Michael Shannon‘s onscreen presence and the overwhelming (sometimes too-overwhelming) authorial control wielded by Guillermo del Toro may very well be a match made in Heaven. We should soon have a sense of their compatibility: the latter is looking to cast the former in his Fox Searchlight-backed Cold War romance, supposedly titled The Shape of Water, which has secured Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer, and Richard Jenkins. [The Wrap]
Here’s the synopsis that came in last week:
We’re hearing that the fairytale, set in 1963, centers around Elisa (Hawkins), a mute janitor working at a lab where an amphibious man is being held captive. When Elisa falls in love with the creature, she devises a plan to help him escape with the assistance of her neighbor (Jenkins). The world outside of the lab, however, may prove to be more dangerous for the amphibious man than Elisa could have anticipated.

Lost in Translation: Chaumeil’s English Language Debut a Wretched Operation
While his 2010 feature debut, Heartbreaker, which starred Vanessa Paradis and Romain Duris, managed to breathe an essence of effervescent charm into an already overproduced narrative, director Pascal Chaumeil followed up with the execrable Dany Boon rom-com Un Plan Parfait. Somehow, he’s managed to top the ineptitude of that with his first dip into English language with A Long Way Down. Butchering its Nick Hornby based source material (the author behind such works that would become films like High Fidelity, About a Boy, and An Education), the end result is an aggravating chore to sit through, a series of awkward and falsely staged interactions, leaving one to sift through multiple ironies in relation to the end product and the unintentionally apt title.

Celebrating its fortieth anniversary this year, MK2 has figured prominently in the international film business since its creation in 1974 by Marin Karmitz forty years ago. Founded by Marin Karmitz and now managed by his son Nathaniel, MK2 was involved in virtually all aspects of the industry from production, distribution, international sales, restoration, and even owns and manages several arthouse movie theaters that focus on opening spaces for new voices and fresh talent from an independent background. However, today, I was sadly told by a fellow French man, MK2 no longer produces or distributes except for a few films it picks up for international licensing in order to stay in the game. Its revenues from its theaters keep it going.
MK2 does an impressive catalogue of films for distribution in territories across the globe. Among the titles in its collection are films from some of the greatest names in cinema: Claude Chabrol, Jean-Luc Godard, Alain Resnais, Jacques Doillon, Olivier Assayas, Abdellatif Kechiche, Charlie Chaplin, David Lynch, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Abbas Kiarostami, Gus Van Sant, Michael Haneke, and Walter Salles.
Always present at all major festivals, and often associated with the winning films, ML2 brings to the Efm a new slate of projects in many stages, from completed films to those that are still in production. Their restorations of classic films open new audiences to experience cinema of the highest quality.

Anna Odell’s drama wins best film at the Guldbagge Awards; Per Fly’sWaltz for Monica (Monica Z) wins four.
Anna Odell’s feature debut The Reunion (Återträffen) received two top prizes at the 50th Guldbagge Awards in Sweden last night. The depiction of a class reunion after 20 years won Best Film and Best Screenplay.
Odell, who wrote the screenplay, said on stage: “I usually say things how they are, but I’m really bewildered. Long live art, life and liberty! And culture and everything.”
It marks the third consecutive year that a debut female filmmaker collected the Best Film statuette after Lisa Aschan’s She Monkeys (Apflickorna) and Gabriela Pichler’s East Sleep Die (Äta sova dö).
Produced by Mathilde Dedye, for French Quarter Film, The Reunion previously picked up the Fipresci prize for Best First Feature in Venice last August and is set to screen at the Rotterdam Film Festival (Jan 22 - Feb 2).

Sometimes neophyte actresses come along who fizzle out after a couple of early promising roles. And then there are those who, from practically the first glimpse we get of them, we just know are going to be big, and are going to be around for a while. Alicia Vikander, a no-brainer inclusion on our On the Rise list from March 2012, definitely falls into the latter category, making a vivid impression first in her feature debut “Pure,” and then breaking internationally with the one-two punch in the corset of “A Royal Affair” and “Anna Karenina.” On Saturday morning the actress jetted in to the Marrakech Film Festival ostensibly as part of its Scandinavian tribute, but also ended up picking the Best Actress award for her role in the terrific “Hotell,” (review here) her reunion with “Pure” director Lisa Langseth. We were lucky enough to get to talk to Vikander (who despite...

By turns funny, sad and discomfiting, Swedish director Lisa Langseth's "Hotell" is a terrific showcase for many of its ensemble, but especially its lead, Alicia Vikander, who here reteams with Langseth, director of her pre-"A Royal Affair," pre-"Anna Karenina" breakout, "Pure." But more than simply an acting exercise, the film is an entertainingly absurdist, occasionally caustic but never judgmental look at that most frequently mishandled of cinematic subjects: mental illness, its many variegated forms, and how we might find healing in the unlikeliest of ways. In fact, it's to the film's credit (though is perhaps as well a mark of the level of stigma attached to the term) that we hesitated even to use the phrase "mental illness" as it conjures up thoughts of exactly the kind of simplistic, diminishing portrayals that the film avoids. "Hotell" is, more than anything else, about schism: between who we'd like...

Once again the European Film Promotion’s (Efp) Film Sales Support (Fss) initiative will come to Toronto to link sales companies from all over Europe to a great array of buyers from across the globe. Supported by the Media Programme of the European Union, Fss has now been aiding the European film industry fro the last 10 years.
"Toronto has and is an important informal market and an important festival for European films, the distributors see the films in a different mood, more quietly, the public screenings are working well. It is a key place to launch a film or to complete previous sales on films that were in Cannes, Venice, Locarno...” (Loïc Magneron, Wide)
“Tiff is a major pillar of the annual festival calendar. Aside from a proliferation of North American buyers, it also attracts top tier international distributors so a favorable reception at Tiff can significantly increase a film's commercial prospects”. (Andrew Orr, Independent)
Due to the limited amount of resources, only 52 out of the 60 films submitted to the Efp will receive financial support to be marketed during the Tiff, which runs from September 5 to 15. This year alone, 372 films total, over 150 from Europe, will screen at the festival many of which will see their world or international premiers there.

Hotell – Lisa Langseth
Section: Contemporary World Cinema
Dates: Friday 6th, Sunday 8th, Sunday 15th
Buzz: For her feature debut Pure (2009), Lisa Langseth was awarded the Guldbagge (Swedish Oscars) for Best Script and Alicia Vikander won the Guldbagge for Best Leading Actress. Since her international breakthrough performance, Vikander has starred in A Royal Affair and shared a screen with Keira Knightley in Joe Wright’s Anna Karenina so we’re thinking that the reunion between director and actor will bring out more of this – essentially more A-game from both the filmmaker and actress.
The Gist: Erika is a beautiful young woman with a perfect life. Until the day it all falls apart. She starts going to group therapy and meets other people suffering from various forms of trauma. One day this eclectic group decides to take matters into its own hands and heads off together in search of a way out.
