Demon Blasting
This is another personal honorable mention in run and gun games. This game you can say is "Metal Slug" and "Ghosts and Goblins" mixed and it' s a tasty combination. Not much in plot a, all you need to know is that demons are terrorizing our realm and you and your buddy are Demon busters that must exterminate them all. And that's it in a nutshell, it really doesn't matter as were all in this game for the action and this game has plenty of it.
There is a good variety of enemies, each has a different method of attack and pattern. Each is crazily random but is also one big love letter to the horror genre as you just have a corn a copia of demons/ Frankensteins, Gremlins, Undead samurai, Jason Vorhees and plenty more bump in the night critters as you go along.
You have several weapons to choose and collect and each of them have their strengths and weaknesses, it really helps in selecting the correct weapon for each stage as their helpful in getting though with minimum complication. From a wave laser that shoots rapidly but with limited range which makes the weapon more on defense. Another is the spread shot which has range and is good for taking out airborne targets.
The levels are broken up into a series of stages. There also kind of randomized as you're always in different settings from a western setting, a ghost pirate ship, medieval castle, cemetery, just any location where there is horror activity. The randomization I feel adds to the game's charm as it creates that unpredictability, you're constantly wondering what the next kind of danger you're going to face. But also, how in each stage you must play though differently as each stage behaves differently, which adds to the challenge as the game causes you to make quick adjustments to your environment.
But you can't take too much time as the game has an auto scrolling feature. This didn't bother me as it was just something different that I honestly don't see that much with run and guns. This feature also added to the suspense in the game, it's just like with the shoot em ups that auto scroll, you have a minimum amount of time to act and react and little to no time to think. The game is on the medium hard side, but it feels fair because there are some parts of the game that may 'be a little easy to get through, but then there are others that will take some practice to get though, and I got to warn you a little frustration. But that's expected in these kinds of games as they operate on the old principle where you can't expect to get it right the first time; but the game is also fair as you really can get through it.
The only misfires are the jumping could've been tighter, it's not broken but the slight awkward feel might be a bit of a put off. Another problem is the music in the game isn't memorable, I just feel with a game like this and the concept it has, there should have been some spooky or even spooky fun tunes which could have been added to the game contributing to its horror theme but oh well.
This vintage classic is blasting bump in the night fun.
Rating: 3 and a half stars.
