Curious Slacker Style slice of Life
lchadbou-326-2659225 July 2018
I wasn, t familiar with the Bengali phenomenon of "adda," in which groups of articulate, mostly well off Indians gather, often in the evenings if they are working,to chit chat in cafes or other watering holes. The film, meant for Indian audiences, provides little context for what we are listening to or the political background of this part of the country (we see revolutionary demonstrators and a Communist flag or two at the beginning ) .But it does provide,in a series of short episodes only a few minutes each,a cross section of life in today,s Calcutta. The closest comparison I could make for this film is with the American indie Slacker, which followed one talkative character after the other in that intellectual town. But "Adda" is lacking in the formal stylistic interest of Richard Linklater,s work, and is merely a serviceable piece of journalism.
