- "The Voice" - Blind Auditions #5 - Sept. 18, 2012
The blind auditions continue.
First up is Trevanne Howell a single mom and receptionist from New York. She wants to show her children you can do anything you dream. She sings "I Have Nothing," by Whitney Houston. She's a little shaky from nerves but she has nice tone and power in her lower register. She hits the chorus and is pretty good but no one is turning and the last note is great. Very strange, no one turns. Even Carson is like "what does it take?" Christina said it was an ambitious choice and she had moments but it was a little shaky in places. Cee Lo thought it was too much power all the way through.
Next up is Collin McLoughlin who dropped out of NYU grad business school to try and make music. His parents were very upset with them. He only had one year left. His mom says if one judge turns it will validate his choice. He sings "Wild World" by Cat Steven accompanying himself on guitar. Cee Lo turns quickly, Blake follows right away. He has a pleasant voice but not particularly remarkable, very mild and mellow but good tone and pitch. Adam also turns. (Backstage his mother admits she was wrong.) He chooses Adam.
Next up is Joselyn Rivera a 17-year-old who was developmentally behind and was "prescribed music" as a therapy and came out of her shell. She feels music saved her and wants it to be therapeutic for others. She sings "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" by Kelly Clarkson. She's no longer in a shell, for sure, he stage presence is strong, her voice is just okay, shaky and pitch-challenged in places. But it's enough to make Christina turn around. And then so does Blake. She chooses Christina.
Next up is Benji who moved to California to be a race car driver. He ran out of money though so now he's trying music. He sings "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," by Bob Dylan, but more in the vein of the Guns N' Roses version. Adam turns at the first chorus. He seems very confident and he's doing his own thing with it. Cee Lo turns next. He closes on a rough, off-key scream which has Christina raising her eyebrows. He chooses Adam.
Next up is a montage of folks who got picked by Cee Lo including Todd Kessler, Ben Taub and Emily Earle.
Next up is Lorraine Ferro a 52-year-old voice and songwriting coach who is one of those irritatingly perky people. She wants to show people it's never to late. She sings "Skyscraper" by Demi Lovato. She gives a very presentational, Broadway-style performance. Her voice has some interesting textures, she sounds a little like Karla Devito but it's inconsistent. No one turns for her.
Next up is Mycle Wastman a 40-year-old from Seattle who was raised by his grandparents. And his grandfather passed away less than 2 weeks before the audition. He's been drifting around employment-wise. He sings "Let's Stay Together," by Al Green. Adam and Cee Lo turn very quickly. He's got a nice raspy tone, a decent falsetto and power. Blake turns next. He chooses Cee Lo.
