- "The Voice" - The Battles Begin - Oct. 8, 2012
It is time for the contestants to do battle. Carson reminds us that fellow coaches can pick up the cast off of other judges' battles. We're also reminded that each coach have an advisor. Blake has got Michael Buble. Adam has Mary J. Blige. Christina has Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day. And Cee Lo has Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty.
The first battle is Team Blake with Casey Muessigmann vs Terry McDermott. Blake says he put them togeher because they're powerful singers with good pitch. He gives them "Carry On My Wayward Son" by Kansas to show which has more stamina. During the rehearsal Buble is impressed with Terry and tells Casey to stop trying to country it up but to bend to the song not vice versa. In a separae sitdowm Buble says he sees Casey's confidence. In Terry's sitdown he says he's doing this for his family. In their final rehearsal they both sound strong. The battle begins and they sing in unison and they sound great. Terry starts and he is very smooth and has amazing pitch. Casey sounds good but Terry's got some nice ad libs. They're chorus harmonies are really nice. This is a pretty good battle actually. Neither has amazing stage presence but they sound great. As does the band. Blake has a tough decision. He picks Terry.
No one elects to steal Casey.
The next battle is Team Adam with Bryan Keith vs. Collin McLoughlin. They meet with Adam and Mary J. He put them together because they will have a great rapport and the song will have a common thread. He picks "Santeria" by Sublime. Mary thinks Collin is amazing but needs to create cackle. Adam is impressed with his pitch but thinks he needs to rough it up. In the final rehearsal Collin showed improvement and Bryan had a little trouble with the rhythm and Adam helps him out. The battle begins and they both have strengths. It's an oddly laid back song but they are both doing a nice job. They're harmonies come nicely as well. Adam also has a tough decision. He picks Bryan.
Blake and Cee Lo both push their button to steal Collin. He picks Blake.
The next battle is Team Cee Lo with Diego Val vs JR Aquino. Diego doesn't know the song Cee Lo picked: "Jessie's Girl" by Rick Springfield. Rob thinks it falls into Diego's wheelhouse but JR knows the tune and Rob and Cee Lo compliment his voice. They all tell Diego to buckle down because he doesn't know the song and didn't do his homework to really learn it. (How does he not know this song. I know he's Peruvian but really?) He also says his downfall is remembering the lyrics. The final rehearsal is much better. In the battle Diego has definitely got under control. He monkeys with the melody but it works. JR toes the line more closely and sounds good and has a nice stage energy. Good harmonies on the pre-chorus. They are both doing a great job. Again, a tough decision for Cee Lo. He picks Diego.
No one elects to steal JR.
The next battle is Team Xtina wih De'Borah vs Nelly's Echo. De'Borah is a huge Green Day fan it's really sweet. She picks "Message in a Bottle" by the Police for them. She thought that since they come from backgrounds of struggle they would be a good fit with each other and the song. Billie Joe thinks Nelly's sung it before it sounds so good, he hasn't. They tell him to do what he's doing. She doesn't know the song and does the best she can but she actually sounds great. Billie says even the mistakes she's making sound really good. In the final rehearsal she still seems nervous and distracted by his ease with it. Christina tells her to not let the anxiety get to her but she knows she's playing catch-up. In the battle They both have superfun stage presence. He starts strong monkeying with the melody just a touch. She seems like she's singing back up to him though on the chorus. She gets her moment and seizes it. They make a great pair really, it's remarkable. This is one of the toughest nights ever and again a real tough choice. All the judges give love to De'Borah but saying Nelly's Echo was great. Christina picks De'Borah.
No one elects to steal Nelly's Echo.
The next battle is Team Blake with 2SteelGirls vs Gracia Harrison. He gives them "Sin Wagon" by the Dixie Chicks. Gracia thinks it works for her but is nervous going up against two voices. Buble tells them to belt on it and it's harder for the mom to do that and she knows she's the weak link. In their final rehearsal Gracia has trouble with nerves and pitch and 2SteelGirls aren't really meshing with each other. He's worried about all of them. In the battle at the start their harmonizing all together sounds amazing. Gracia starts off pretty srong as does he daughter in 2Steel. And again in the chorus all together they sound great. Gracia builds in confidence. They all sound much better than expected. Blake picks Gracia.
No one elects to steal 2Steel Girls.
The final battle is Team Cee Lo with Amanda Brown vs Trevin Hunte. She is a big Rob Thomas fan. Cee Lo picked "Vision of Love" by Mariah Carey. Amanda blows away both Rob and Cee Lo. Cee Lo asks Trevin if he thinks he can handle it. Trevin has confidence issues but tries to bring it, even Amanda is cheering him on. Cee Lo is mad at himself for pairing them because she's so strong. In the final rehearsal Cee Lo tells her to put her own spin on the lower octaves. Trevin says he has held back a bit and people will be shocked in the battle. In the battle Trevin starts off smooth and strong and she chimes in just as smoothly. They're both doing a good job although he's a little strident at points on the high parts. They have great rapport and a killer final harmony note. They get a huge ovation and Cee Lo is stricken. Adam says whoever Cee Lo doesn't pick he is stealing. Christina also says she's going to steal. Adam points out how stupid it was for Cee Lo to put them together. Cee Lo picks Trevin.
All the other judges push their buttons to get Amanda. Trevin cheers for her. And it must feel like vindication since only Cee Lo turned for her the first time. She picks Adam.
