"Summer school... A fate worse than death". 'Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin' returns for a thrilling second season, rebranded under the new subtitle 'Summer School'.
This slasher sequel picks up right where the events of 'Original Sin' had left off. We catch up with our girls on Christmas morning, when Imogen receives a phone call from a distressed Kelly Beasley. Informing her of Archie Waters' (A) escape. After tying up some loose ends Archie is finally caught, and our liars can attempt to resume a somewhat normal life. Until... a new threat aposes, Bloody Rose, promising a more horrifying torment.
The first episode of PLL: Summer School alone had me instantly hooked. Gripping fans in with a familiar face, Dr Sullivan. (A therapist who supported the original liars in 2010's 'Pretty Little Liars'.) She is back once more to guide the new generation of "Liars" and support them with their traumas of last year.
Since watching the following three episodes, and unravelling more of this season's mysteries. I just know we are in for a thrilling ride. The horror tones of this season blow last season out of the water! Which has to be one of my biggest praises for Summer School. The onscreen chemistry and emotional depth between each of the liars this season is also a great asset.
Another aspect I love so much about this iteration of PLL, is that you don't have to have seen the original to watch the new show. I do wholeheartedly believe that new audiences will LOVE this version and may feel inspired to go back and watch the OG. As the original is a staple!!
As much as I'm thoroughly loving the return of PLL. There's an aspect of Summer School that I'm not so sure is connecting with me very well. That being the "Spooky Spaghetti" element. Whenever those two words are uttered I feel a slight withdrawal. It just sounds silly and unserious to me.
Another slight nitpic of mine, I was really worried they'd be going down a supernatural route this season. After seeing the girls chant "Bloody Rose" in the mirror and having her show up in Millwood shortly after. But thankfully as of now, I don't believe that is the case.
All in all, I am so thrilled to have 'Pretty Little Liars' back on my screen once more. Week in week out I'm gasping to see what happens next, and I'm praying that Summer School gets a renewal for a third season. Which I'm pretty confident in saying may happen!
