At the Overlook Film Festival, attendees were treated to a rare screening of Oculus in celebration of its 10th anniversary and Mike Flanagan being awarded with the festival's Master of Horror award! Ahead of the screening, I had a chance to catch up with Mike Flanagan for an in-depth discussion on one of my favorite modern horror films. From discussing him playing Bloody Mary and his fascination with mirrors, to casting, the on-set experience, and sequel chances, we discuss it all below:
I can't believe it's been 10 years since Oculus was released! It's interesting because I hadn't revisited the film in a little bit, but I've seen everything that you've directed, and so it's been a joy to watch the progression of your career, the stories you tell, and the way you tell them.
Looking back at Oculus, it's very much a blueprint for telling really powerful supernatural stories rooted in family dynamics and trauma.

Nearly three years have gone by since Chris Stuckmann, a movie critic and author with a channel on YouTube that has over 2 million subscribers, signed a deal with Paper Street Pictures to write and direct the mystery horror film Shelby Oaks. Two years ago, the project became the most-funded horror film project in Kickstarter history, with its crowdfunding campaign pulling in over $1 million. Filming took place in the Cleveland, Ohio area back in 2022, and while we still don’t know when we’re going to have a chance to see Shelby Oaks, Deadline reports that genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan has just board the project, which is making its way through post-production, as an executive producer.
Flanagan’s previous credits include Absentia, Oculus, Hush, Before I Wake, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Gerald’s Game, The Haunting of Hill House, Doctor Sleep, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club, and...

While the Big Easy was still shaking off a slight springtime chill, my horror-loving heart was heating up as I rode the escalator to the third floor of the Canal Place mall: home of the sprawling food court, the terrific Prytania Theaters, and, for this weekend, the official headquarters of the “summer camp for genre fans,” the 2024 Overlook Film Festival!
Taking that second escalator up to the third floor is akin to ascending to horror nirvana, as I was immediately immersed in all manner of the macabre: the Vinegar Syndrome table of essential physical media waited on my right, the Super Yaki merch table of eerie apparel lied straight ahead, and must-see screenings lurk around every corner. After meeting up with fellow Daily Dead team members Jonathan and Christy, we headed to our first screening of the fest: I Don’t Understand You. Karen Gillan "didn't stop crying for days" after watching an unfinished version of 'The Life of Chuck'.The 36-year-old actress features in Mike Flanagan's upcoming movie based on the Stephen King novella and explained that the story – about a man reliving his life in reverse order – tugged at her heartstrings.Speaking to Collider, Karen said: "I saw a not-finished version of it, and literally didn't stop crying for days. In a good way."It's a cathartic experience. It's someone dealing with the end of their life, and it's told in a very imaginative way, and it's just beautiful. It's a celebration of life, I suppose. I think we could all do with a bit of that."It is the second time that the former 'Doctor Who' star has collaborated with Flanagan after she appeared in his 2013 horror film 'Oculus' and she had glowing praise for the director.

Some horror properties naturally lend themselves to incessant sequels, while others seem to will themselves into existence through sheer will, as if they’re the result of a demonic possession. William Friedkin’s The Exorcist, while over 50 years old, is still considered to be one of the scariest movies of all-time. Various Exorcist sequels and even a two-season television series have materialized over time. However, none of these projects generated the same level of skepticism that accompanied Blumhouse’s announcement that they’d be producing not just a legacy sequel to Friedkin’s original film, but an entire trilogy, directed by David Gordon Green. Green had just pulled off a similar spectacle with his Halloween legacy sequel trilogy, yet Michael Myers’ slasher antics are much more conducive to this formula than repeated returns to The Exorcist’s MacNeils.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Oculus and The Fall of the House of Usher.
Of all the horror creators currently working in the business, few have the ability to tear at our heartstrings like Mike Flanagan. Beginning with the 2018 hit miniseries The Haunting of Hill House, the director’s horrific Netflix shows are just as likely to elicit cathartic sobs as hysterical screams. However, with a cast of unlikeable characters and a cavalcade of grisly deaths, Flanagan’s newest series The Fall of the House of Usher may signal a return to the grim horror of his early career. Films like Absentia, Hush, and Ouija: Original of Evil all center harsh and unforgiving stories – a gut punch rather than a bittersweet embrace. Perhaps the cruelest of these is Oculus, the 2013 story of a haunted mirror. Ten years after its premiere, this nihilistic movie still feels like a lean...

During an interview last week, Tom Hiddleston (Loki) confirmed that his work on the film The Life of Chuck – the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – was complete. Flanagan has since taken to social media to confirm that filming has wrapped completely… and to let us know that The Life of Chuck is not a horror movie. Which makes sense, since we’ve previously heard that the movie will be similar in tone to the likes of Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile (and Hiddleston himself compared it to The Shawshank Redemption).

There’s something wonderfully nerve-rattling about a “survive the night” horror scenario, whether it’s a handful of strangers trying to fend off crazed zombies in “Night of the Living Dead” or a group of sarcastic Gen Z friends suspecting each other of murder in “Bodies Bodies Bodies.”
Here are some of our favorite entries in this subgenre, where the weapons are improvised, the stakes are life and death and there’s no guarantee anyone will get out alive.
We did not include movies that take place over a few days (like “Battle Royale”) or movies that aren’t streaming right now, like “Ready or Not.”

Sure as the Pizza Planet truck will show up in every Pixar movie (except "The Incredibles" for some reason), the Lasser Glass can always be found somewhere in Mike Flanagan's horror movies and TV shows. This ornate, evil mirror hails from the very beginning of Flanagan's career -- a short film called "Oculus: Chapter 3 - The Man with the Plan," made in 2005 -- and the filmmaker has brought it with him ever since. Either that ... or it's been following him.
As you might expect, the Lasser Glass makes another appearance in Flanagan's new Netflix series, "The Fall of the House of Usher." An adaptation of various works by Edgar Allan Poe, the eight-episode series reimagines the doomed Usher family as pharmaceutical magnates in the vein of the real-life Sackler family. The Ushers have played a major role in creating America's opioid crisis, but have escaped justice thanks to a...

"No good thing lasts forever" feels like the sort of poignant theme you'd expect to pop up in a Mike Flanagan horror project. So it goes in real life, too, with Flanagan's latest series, the Edgar Allan Poe-inspired modern Gothic drama "The Fall of the House of Usher" (read /Film's review by Chris Evangelista here), slated to serve as his final Netflix offering.
Since his breakout success on the horror film "Oculus," Flanagan has become synonymous with the streamer's scarier output. In addition to directing Netflix's "Gerald's Game" (an all-timer among Stephen King film adaptations that features one of the gnarliest moments put to screen in recent memory), he created the company's acclaimed "Haunting" anthology series, as well as the polarizing but deeply fascinating religious horror drama show "Midnight Mass." Along with that announcement comes the unveiling of multiple first look images and a poster for the show, and you can check all of those out at the bottom of this article.

When the dust settled Wednesday, it was HBO and Max making the most of its rebranding, scoring 127 Emmy nominations and leading all networks and streamers, thanks in large part to significant contributions from “Succession,” “The Last of Us,” “The White Lotus” and “Barry.” In a strong showing, Netflix earned the second-most nominations for the 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards. While HBO/Max’s total is down from last year’s 140, it was still enough for the brand to land on top on nominations morning.
HBO had the three top-performing series with regards to nominations, specifically “Succession,” which led all series with 27, “The Last of Us” (24) and “The White Lotus” (23). Netflix’s numbers were buoyed by 13 nominations apiece for “Dahmer” and “Beef, as well as “Wednesday” (12).

HBO is once again the leader among Emmy nominations — though it’s a little closer than it was a year ago.
The premium cable outlet and sibling streamer Max gathered 127 nominations for the 75th Emmy Awards on Wednesday. That’s 13 fewer nods than the two platforms combined to receive in 2022.
HBO and Max’s total is two dozen more than second-place Netflix, which had 103 nominations. Apple TV+ finished third with 50 nominations, Hulu and Amazon’s Prime Video got 42 each, and Disney+ has 40. (There’s a bit of fuzziness with the Hulu numbers, as the Television Academy counted shows like The Bear and Fleishman Is in Trouble under FX, which produced them, even though they streamed solely on Hulu. Disney says Hulu has 64 total nominations rather than 42 as listed by the Academy, with the FX/Hulu shows accounting for the discrepancy.)

Mike Flanagan is one of the most exciting names in horror right now, but his journey to getting there was a bit stop-and-go. He got his first taste of box office success with 2013's "Oculus," the filmmaker's well-received adaptation of his own short movie, "Oculus: Chapter 3 – The Man with the Plan." After that, Flanagan helmed three horror movies in rapid succession. Of the trio, one of them went directly to Netflix (the underrated home invasion thriller "Hush"), while another one of them spent several years floundering in limbo after its U.S. distributor, Relativity Media, declared bankruptcy ("Before I Wake").
The last of these three movies was 2016's "Ouija: Origin of Evil." For those who haven't seen it, "Origin of Evil" is a much better film than its risible subtitle would suggest. It's also vastly superior to 2014's "Ouija," a flash-in-the-pan Universal/Blumhouse hit that grossed more than 20 times its...

Exclusive: As production on his new actioner Den of Thieves 2: Pantera continues, Christian Gudegast has been set to write and direct a new film on mixed martial artist Royce Gracie and the birth of the Ultimate Fighting Championship for frequent partner Tucker Tooley Entertainment.
The Untitled Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Project takes place on the night that Gracie proved Brazilian Jiu-jitsu as the most effective fighting style, one that would ultimately become a major component of today’s UFC mixed martial arts. It more specifically chronicles Gracie’s debut in UFC 1 on November 12, 1993, when the fighter achieved the unthinkable during the organization’s inaugural competition. This night that had him besting three competitors is considered to be that on which the UFC was born.

The Mandalorian has given Katee Sackhoff, who plays Bo-Katan Kryze on the Star Wars series, perhaps her most popular role. But Sackhoff very nearly didn’t pursue acting at all. In fact, she had a very different career plan until fate intervened. Here’s how Sackhoff decided to become an actor, finding herself on a collision course with Hollywood in the late ’90s.

And over the next decade or so, Sackhoff would become a TV mainstay with multiple guest appearances on shows such as Nip/Tuck, 24, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and The Flash.

The Mandalorian stars Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin, a bounty hunter who creates an unexpected bond with a baby alien named Grogu (formerly known as “Baby Yoda”). But the series has expanded a lot since that fairly straightforward premise, bringing in TV veterans like Katee Sackhoff. But how much is the actor who plays Bo-Katan Kryze actually worth? Let’s find out.
Katee Sackhoff had humble beginnings before her acting career
These days, Sackhoff might be making waves in the “galaxy far, far away.” But she wasn’t always such a fan-favorite star. In fact, as she told fans during a 2020 live Q&a, her entire household relied on her mother’s modest income when Sackhoff was a child.
“I absolutely know what it looks like to stick with something because of finances. My mom was a teacher. She made, with a Master’s degree, $30,000 a year. She taught for 34 years,...

If you’re a fan of the blood-soaked, horrifying, ruthless, gut-churning, every-second-of-the-way kind of films, then “Evil Dead Rise” should be your next theatrical watch. While there are quite a few issues with the film, including wardrobe choices and confusing accents, “Evil Dead Rise” is your latest horror film to just have pure fun with. To enjoy such a film with an engaged crowd is experience enough to recommend it. With the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis resurfacing due to an earthquake and the curiosity of a child, unspeakable evil is unleashed on an apartment building in LA this time around. Frankly, there isn’t much LA in this film, but either way, it’s a blast, and if we step aside from the fact that it is a part of the larger franchise and watch it as a stand-alone, it’s quite enjoyable but falls a little short in terms of a hooking plot.

For genre fans who grew up in the 1980s and ’90s, Fangoria will always be one of the biggest names in horror. While under control of various owners, the Fangoria brand has weaved in and out of the movie world over the decades – and the latest iteration of Fangoria launched Fangoria Studios in 2021 “to develop and produce film, television and podcasts.” Now Variety reports that Fangoria Studios is developing a live-action feature film adaptation of the manga Bloodsucking Darkness, created by Junji Ito, with The Haunting of Hill House writer Jeff Howard working on the screenplay. The search for a director is now underway.
Apparently also known as Blood Slurping Darkness, Ito’s manga is a twisted vampire story that centers on a young woman who develops an eating disorder after her boyfriend breaks up with her. She meets a boy who is concerned about her weight loss… and then...

Mike Flanagan has likely been famous among horror fans since Oculus, an interesting take on horror that featured two actors that portray some favorited comic book adaptations in DC Comics and Marvel, Brenton Thwaites and Karen Gillan, Nightwing and Nebula, respectively. Since the movie Oculus, however, Mike Flanagan has dominated with original horror movies, series, and adaptations. Still, more recently, the modern horror pioneer has been on the grind specifically for Netflix. It has proven to be a perfect fit for the writer, director, and creator of many horror titles he’s been involved with, with some inspiration. Below, we’ve detailed

In news that is sure to make gorehounds grin, Paramount+ and Paramount Home Entertainment have announced that the year's biggest original horror movie, "Smile," will be available to stream and purchase digitally in the U.S. and Canada this Tuesday, November 15, 2022. "Smile" hit theaters on the last day of September and just recently crossed the 200 million mark at the worldwide box office, and the latest numbers indicate (via Box Office Mojo) that it's just shy of the 211 million haul of China's "Nice View," currently the year's highest-grossing original film.
Of course, "original" is a somewhat subjective term, but we'll get to that. One thing that is certain is that "Smile" has brought the bacon, not just money-wise, but in the sense of upholding the horror tradition of the Bacon family. The film stars Sosie Bacon, the real-life daughter of Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick, as a psychiatrist who starts seeing...

Mike Flanagan is not one to repeat himself. The horror filmmaker hand been cranking out excellent horror films like “Oculus,” “Ouija: Origin of Evil” and “Gerald’s Game” when he started crafting horror shows for Netflix, carving out a niche with binge-worthy limited series like the Shirley Jackson adaptation “The Haunting of Hill House,” the Henry James love story “The Haunting of Bly Manor” and the religion-centric vampire drama “Midnight Mass.” And for his next trick, Flanagan is trying something he’s never done before: kick off an ongoing series.
“The Midnight Club” is based on the Christopher Pike book of the same name and follows a group of teens at a hospice for terminally ill kids who gather at midnight every night to tell each other ghost stories. Flanagan admits in an interview with TheWrap that leaving things off on a cliffhanger is not deeply comfortable for him, and he...

At this point in his career, you’d think filmmaker Mike Flanagan would have earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to deciding what’s scary. The man behind “Oculus,” “Doctor Sleep” and the Netflix series “The Haunting of Hill House,” “The Haunting of Bly Manor” and “Midnight Mass” has made a career out of terrifying audiences. And yet, while working on his latest Netflix series “The Midnight Club,” the inevitable notes came down that the show needed more jump scares. And Flanagan is not the biggest fan of this particular trope.
“I don’t want you to think I’m picking on Netflix with this because I’ve gotten this note my whole career,” Flanagan told TheWrap in a recent interview. “I have gotten this everywhere I’ve worked. But there’s a general misunderstanding, I think, that can happen with a lot of studios and in...

After dropping the epic “Lord of the Rings” television series on Prime Video last month, it’s no surprise the streaming giant is taking it easy this October. They still have plenty of new shows and movies coming out, though none quite on the scale of their journey to Middle Earth.
That being said, they’re transitioning from the world of fantasy to science fiction with their new series “The Peripheral.” Touted as being from the creators of HBO’s “Westworld,” Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, the time-traveling series is based on author William Gibson’s bestselling sci-fi novel.

There are typically three destinations for a short horror film. Most of the time, they stay short and sweet. Another common outcome for these quick flicks is their joining others in compilation movies (also known as “frankenthologies”). As for the last and most fortunate fate, a short might be turned into something bigger.
There is a long history of horror shorts being made into full-length features. The Evil Dead, Saw, Mama, The Babadook and Lights Out are just some prime examples. And with Parker Finn‘s Smile (based on Laura Hasn’t Slept) continuing the tradition in theaters this weekend, now is a good time to check out other similar transformations.

The phrase “smile through the pain” takes on a menacing new meaning in “Smile,” as Parker Finn uses an internationally recognized symbol of happiness to elicit fear and evil as part of the film’s exploration of trauma. A smile is nothing more than a mask, and the real horror arises from the true intention behind it.
Sosie Bacon stars as Rose Cotter, a doctor who works in an emergency psychiatric unit and has carried a heavy burden since she witnessed her mother’s suicide at ten years old. Her mental health begins to deteriorate after she assesses a young woman named Laura (Caitlin Stasey) who is brought in for witnessing a suicide. Frantic and begging for someone to believe her, Laura tells Rose that she is being taunted by a being that only she can see; one that smiles and changes its appearance all while delivering a death threat.

What are we to make of "Smile," a horror pic that is somehow both effectively creepy and almost comically derivative? Movies steal from other movies all the time, but it starts to get downright ridonkulous when "Smile" is concerned. "The Ring," "The Grudge," "Oculus," "It Follows," the recent "The Night House," and many, many more films in a similar vein make up the skeleton of "Smile," which seems to think that all you need to tell a new scary story is to simply rip off a bunch of other successful horror movies first. I am a proponent of the idea that movies should be judged on their terms, but "Smile" doesn't really have any of its own terms. It is a bit of mimicry; a paint-by-numbers set-up that is content to feel consistently familiar. It exists in the shadow of everything that came before it. Even worse, it latches onto...

Approaching "The Haunting of Hill House" like a marathon feature film, writer-director Mike Flanagan aimed to retain as much of Shirley Jackson's bestselling story as much as possible, while expanding material -- the queer identity of Theodora, for example, could be more explicit than it could in 1959. But as with any Flanagan tale, every moment must justify itself and serve the greater story.
Monologues are vulnerable in the editing room due to their potential to lose viewer interest -- an actor has to really sell it for an audience to sit through a two or three minute speech. The "Oculus" director doesn't seem to mind; in fact, he tells Vulture that "a monologue paints a vivid mental picture if it's done right." "Hill House" features plenty of them, but one monologue was especially worth fighting for. He tells Vulture:

Mike Flanagan has a gift for creating emotionally-resonant horror dramas that reveal something essential about the human condition. The creator of "The Haunting of Hill House" and "The Haunting of Bly Manor" shot to fame with the aid of several horror entries throughout the years. Be it his hauntingly surreal "Gerald's Game" or his dark, intriguing "Doctor Sleep," Flanagan's body of work has exemplified that horror does not have to be overly reliant on jump scares to be effective. The horror director is currently on a steady path toward releasing two highly-anticipated Netflix series, namely "The Midnight Club" and "The Fall of the House of Usher."
Back in 2005, Flanagan directed a horror short named "Oculus: Chapter 3 – The Man with the Plan," in which a young man named Tim is driven insane after he interacts with a cursed mirror. While this premise was interesting enough, it was too one-dimensional to be stretched into a full-length feature.

The isolation and helplessness some people felt during the prime days of Covid lockdown is utilized to good effect in “The Harbinger.” Andy Mitton’s second solo feature (following two co-directed with Jesse Holland) is a spooky tale in which vulnerable individuals find themselves prey to a malevolent spirit that worms into their dreams, dislodging them from grounding reality.
in XYZ Films’ release to limited theaters and VOD on Sept. 1.
Disturbing, recurrent cries from the NYC apartment of Mavis (Ellen Davis) have gotten complaints from neighbors, particularly a next-door “Karen” and belligerent anti-masker (Stephanie Roth Haberle). When her more-sympathetic building superintendent (Cody Braverman) lets himself in to investigate, he finds the tenant in a state of whimpering hysteria and self-harm — yet asleep. After successfully waking her, he urges Mavis to get help.

Written by a Scot, adapted from an American novel, with a US director and two Brits playing Americans in the lead roles, HBO and Sky Atlantic co-production The Time Traveler’s Wife could scarcely be more transatlantic. The six-part time-travel rom-com, written by Steven Moffat based on Audrey Niffenegger’s hit 2003 book, is the story of Henry DeTamble, a Chicago librarian with a fantasy genetic condition that causes him to unexpectedly drop out and into his timeline, disappearing and reappearing in inconvenient times, places and states of undress. Played by Theo James, Henry is the titular time traveller, while his titular wife is Claire Abshire, played here by Rose Leslie (and by Rachel McAdams in the earlier movie.) Here’s where you’ll have seen James and Leslie before.

A video spreading across social media of Volodymyr Zelensky with a bag of cocaine on his desk is – of course – fake, and the latest in an ongoing smear campaign against the Ukrainian president.
In the manipulated video, a not-inconspicuous amount of white powder is seen next to Zelensky as he conducts a video conference with Elon Musk.
It didn’t take long before the original, cocaine-less clip resurfaced — BBC disinformation journalist Shayan Sardarizeh noted the original video was from March — but by then hundreds of pro-Russian, English-speaking Twitter accounts had spread the shallow fake video.
