Definitely not a comedy.

The only funny thing is that there are chicken puppets and nobody thinks it's weird. And there's plenty of chicken themed music. One song even rips off Nine Inch Nails' Head Like A Hole. It's a decent story but the end is disappointing. It's definitely the best movie about evil poultry that I saw this week.

Definitely NOT for all tastes....

Had I never seen "Inside Scarlet", I never would have learned about Carter Mays' earlier film, "Bad Chicken". While "Inside Scarlet" is brilliant and surreal, "Bad Chicken" is surreal...but also rather uneven. But I am glad that "Bad Chicken" was made as it led directly to "Inside Scarlet"...a truly brilliant film. This is because both films feature the same actress (Isabelle Gardo) AND the same chicken puppet! So, while making "Bad Chicken", Mays and his crew learned how to use and integrate the puppet into the film and this really was evident by the follow up film.

The story is a simple and very crude story about an evil chicken and his two evil chicken henchmen (henchchickens?) and how they destroy a couple of lives...for kicks. It's all told in flashbacks and you know that Chicken was arrested...but what exactly transpired? Well, through the course of the film you learn that they found an incredibly gullible and amazingly dumb wanna-be actress and manipulated the heck out of her and her boyfriend. The couple were told that they were filming a reality TV show...but it was all just a guise to do evil. What, exactly, did they do? See the film...if you can find it.

As I already said, the film is very crude and involves chicken/human sex! It's bound to offend and shock...and it's obvious Mays wants to push the viewer's buttons! Occasionally it works well...occasionally it falls flat...but it never, ever is dull! Provocative and uneven.

What Came First: The Talking Chicken or The Gullible Human?
nammage2 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Bad Chicken has three bad chickens (though one who leads the other two) who trick an idiot couple; one of which (the girl Nora) wants nothing but to be a Reality TV star. They all go out to the desert to film a documentary of sorts where Charlie the chicken starts telling lies about Nora's boyfriend Isaak to Nora. More of a Thriller than a Comedy. If actually a Comedy, it wasn't that funny. Yes, I get the humorous element of puppet chickens duping two moronic humans in believing whatever they say but these chickens don't say humorous things most of the film. A line here and there but that could be true for almost any film. We learn, in the beginning, that Caesar the Chicken, his mother apparently turned tricks when he was just a little baby chick and Charlie the Chicken, his father made him swallow drugs and deliver them to varying places making him a mule. And Carl the Chicken seems to be mentally disabled, hears voices (from flies, I think) and comes off as being more of an idiot than Nora and Isaak. I don't know where the humor is in that but maybe the writer/director finds that humorous.

This is all shown in flashbacks. Apparently the chickens have been arrested and Charlie Chicken is telling the story. Why he did the horrible thing(s) he did, and why Nora and Isaak, and others before them, deserved it.

Deeper into watching the film I got, it just kept reminding me how fake Reality TV is; and, how maybe that's the point of this film. Or, perhaps it's just a weird film. And it is weird. It's got the weird factor down. Especially during the 'Bad Chicken' song it goes into flashbacks of Charlie Chicken having sex with multiple women in different hotel rooms he's stayed in over the years of his adult chicken life. The fact of Charlie Chicken seducing Nora, and masturbating during a phone conversation with her. Later they have sex with Carl Chicken masturbating to it. It's like chicken pornography, or something. Weird. Also, most of the time the chickens are alone and talking, they sound stoned, and are stoned.

This film was a trip. Different, some funny lines here and there (as stated), the acting wasn't bad, the script and direction wasn't bad. The music wasn't bad but too much, at times. Overall, I enjoyed it. Definitely not a film for everyone (especially not children, not a children's film at all even though it has puppet chickens) but if you can stand to watch something different and weird: this is the film for you.

Wannabe actress kidnapped by puppet chickens in this weird indie
Leofwine_draca24 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
BAD CHICKEN is a very weird parody thriller, one in a handful of micro budget cult films that feature hand puppets as their menace. This one plays out like your usual thriller in which an attractive wannabe young starlet is kidnapped by a sinister TV crew and taken out into the desert to film, only to discover their sinister intentions. The twist? That the TV crew are puppet chickens.

It's weird stuff indeed, and not very interesting or funny with it. The main actress gives an okay performance but the puppets are merely silly and certain scenes, like the puppet sex scene in the tent, are just pointless and you have to wonder about the director's intentions.
