“Meantime” was selected as a finalist in this year’s ShortList Film Festival, presented by TheWrap. You can watch the films and vote for your favorite here.
What began its life as a short film about a cult-like drug rehabilitation program ended up becoming even more personal for director Michael T. Workman. In “Meantime,” Workman fixes his camera on his father and, with the help of home videos from two different generations, explores parenthood, pressure and the pitfalls of a capitalistic society.
“It morphed into a film that was more about our relationship and more of a character study about him, and about memory, and familial guilt and the depravity of capitalism,” Workman said in a recent interview with TheWrap.
“Meantime” is an unflinching look into Workman’s father Tim’s life, as he struggles to keep his head above water in the aftermath of a stroke where he depends on food banks,...

Almost exactly one year after Kevin Smith sold his horror anthology Killroy Was Here as an Nft (with the Ashley Benson slasher Alone at Night following in his footsteps soon after), Variety reports that XYZ Films has picked up the domestic distribution rights to another film that blends horror with crypto. Thankfully, this one isn’t being sold as an Nft, it will be heading out into the world in a more traditional way. The new movie is called The Deep Web: Murdershow and it will take viewers on a dark ride when a journalist’s search for clues to his sister’s murder leads him to a disturbing crypto currency torture website inside the deep web called The Murdershow. As those close to him disappear, he must find and stop this reign of terror.
The idea of torture website kind of reminds me of the Hostel movies. If that franchise were still alive,...

Amanda Nell Eu’s “Tiger Stripes,” which had its premiere this week in Cannes Film Festival’s Critics’ Week, is being celebrated as a punchy female-driven debut feature and as the first film by a Malaysian woman director in any section Cannes.
The story focuses on a small group of 11 or 12-year-old girls. When one of the friends enters puberty she finds her body changing in unexpected ways. Relations with her friends and family start morphing too. Eu’s finished film straddles the metaphorical drama and body horror genres.
“Tiger Stripes” is also a triumph for the now highly-developed global network of project markets, talent development programs, script and production workshops (often labelled as ‘labs’) and grant schemes. These are intended to encourage diversity and nurture film-making talent in countries where that is a rarity or where commercial films crowd out more experimental art-house titles.
