Spider Man meets Kick-Ass
Horst_In_Translation15 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
And the result is Antboy in this danish superhero movie aimed at younger audiences. Of course, it does not have the financial possibilities of the real huge superhero blockbusters (despite winning the prestigious Visual Effects award at the Danish Film Prize, hear hear), but it makes up for these with lots of charm and humor. The kids all give good performances and the main character is pretty likable. My favorite part was how his interest changes from the Barbie-like girl that everybody adores to her adventurous sister. The little Barbie wants Ant Boy to kiss her, but he suddenly has no interest in her anymore and asks for the other girl, after which the Barbie girl, just reacts in a bit of a bitchy way that she calls her sister and that somebody wants to visit her.

The main villain (Nicolas Bro, one of Denmarks most famous actors right now worked with Spielberg and von Trier recently) to Antboy is huge mixture between human and flea, kinda perfect, a bit scary, but not too much and also mostly in a funny weird way. Quite a character this flea. The final message on friendship is a nice one, although it appears a bit random and only included for the sake of it without really much convincing story dependence, especially as the other boy was much more of a friend to Antboy than to the main character.

In Denmark this film must have been quite a success as for Christmas 2014, there will be a sequel coming out. Hopefully they manage to make this work too. Nicolas Bro will be back, so maybe the ant and the flea will clash again. Antboy 1 is the first feature film, after some short film work, for director Ask Hasselbach. The writing staff is prominent too and has been featured before on the original "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" for example. If you like superhero movies, this one deserves definitely a look. It's very different and at the same time refreshing. In Germany there is quite a few decent children's movies based on books coming out and here finally is one from north the border. The runtime is clearly under 90 minutes, so it's even a good choice for those who struggle with movies that drag a lot. This one does not and I would not want to cut out a single scene. Recommended.

Interesting
neiljones19819 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'll be honest, I don't give a monkeys about the mainstream "superhero" films, such as those in the so-called Marvel Universal and the DC Universe. I fail to see the appeal myself, but they seem to be in favour at the moment and generate bucketloads of cash at the Box Office so what do I know?

Outside of this mainstream sphere, we have everybody else and lesser known superheroes. Such as Antboy. Which could be described as a total rip-off of Spiderman even down to how the kid gets his Ant powers. Based on a Danish comic of the same name, this Dutch production is clearly as cheap as chips but yet managed to look like it had a bit of money thrown at it. It's not a bad little production for what it is, American productions on similar budgets manage to look cheap. This doesn't.

Anyway they must have done something right as this generated two sequels. On Amazon Prime its been dubbed into English. I dare say there may be a version with subtitles floating around too somewhere. It's an interesting slightly quirky take on the superhero genre. I quite enjoyed it. Nothing new here but it was different, if nothing else.

A little superhero's a big adventure.
Reno-Rangan22 February 2014
A children's superhero movie that offers nothing great moment for adults. Specially made movie for tween kids, definitely they gonna enjoy. For adults, it is like a spoof and kids' version of the Spiderman movie. Yeah, it was kinda inspired by the Spiderman movie so they gave right credit by mentioning it in the story.

Most of the modern Danish movies I saw were very impressive. They take challenging subjects and carve into a great piece. It is a lookout film industry like South Korea. So I laid my on this movie when I saw the first teaser as I am a children movie fan. This was a good movie, but as a middle aged man this did not work for me.

The kids gave their best, many were debuted with this so it's their first experience to perform in front of the camera. It's clearly visible their amateur acting skills. Only experience can teach and improve them on this field. For a maiden movie they have done a decent job except lack in facial expression in different situation of the story.

The first Danish superhero movie based on the children's book. This movie was very short, runs for less than 80 minutes, so it was the reason it did not bore me. As a superhero movie, there's not enough stunts in it. Looks like they kept it low to target little kid's audience. Even the story was also familiar, only characters were derived. Overall, it can be acceptable, but not by the large margin.

Antboy, with a strong parallel to the Spiderman story.
TxMike17 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I found this movie on Netflix streaming movies. Ever since I was a small boy I have enjoyed the escapism that superhero stories provide. This one is in Danish but was dubbed very well into English.

Oscar Dietz is Pelle Nøhrmann, and much like Peter Parker in 'Spiderman' is small and meek and mostly overlooked by his classmates. One day he is running home from the two bully brothers when he ducks through some bushes to hide. While there he gets bit by a large ant and, much like the spider this ant has been genetically altered. Pelle falls asleep in the yard and when he finally heads home just wants to go to bed. The ant's powers have begun to alter his body and the next day finds he has super strength for his size, like an ant does, and his fuel is sugar. Along with his good friend they think up a name and come up with Antboy when he is in costume.

So this movie, relatively short at just over one hour, mostly establishes Antboy and how he got his powers. In this story he has to fight the Fleaman who had kidnapped a classmate of Pelle's and eventually get him arrested and sent to jail.

While I enjoyed this movie enough it is probably best for children. I plan to also see the next one, "Revenge of the Red Fury." And I see Antboy III is in post-production.

The Worst Movie Ever Made.
robipatr12 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
You know this is going to be a bad movie when one of the plot keywords is 'Urination'. The only reason this isn't 1 star is that the comic book opening titles are drawn well, and this is slightly enjoyable ironically. More clichés than every other movie combined. "I want to be noticed." "I want to be less ordinary." "No one knows I exist." Horrible English dubbing. It's probably more enjoyable and understandable in Danish. This is worse than Good Burger.

Totally watchable
facundo366 September 2015
I've just seen Antboy and as expected, doesn't bring anything new to the super-heroic genre. It doesn't even bring anything new to the whole movie-about-child genre. But there's where the really interesting part is. All in all i feel like Antboy is a love letter to the superheroes stories most of us grew up with. It has almost every cliché from every single superhero movie you can remember without googling, and that's the reason that makes it so fun to watch. It might not be the best acting performance you'll ever see, but the kids are cool and the script is quite consistent all around. The tone is set properly and after seeing the trailer for the upcoming sequel i confirm what i said above. It's a fun, entertaining movie that doesn't bring any surprises but doesn't fall apart either (did anybody say Crap-tastic Four?). I would totally recommend it to someone who really loves superhero comics/movies. The rest might (and will) find it dull.

In a few words: Antboy is to the superhero genre what Fanboys is to Star Wars.

This movie will only bring you ironic enjoyment
awboekestein14 August 2022
I watched this with one of my friends, and we had a great time making fun of it together. Most of the plot makes no sense, and the acting is hilariously atrocious. All of the characters are so awkward together and act like they'd rather be anywhere else. The "climax" was such a letdown it had us in stitches.

If you're looking for a good time, watch it ironically, but don't expect to enjoy it otherwise.

For small children maybe interesting
Hopstimop28 August 2014
It is a nice little movie, but it has nothing to be exceptional.

It may be good for very little children up to 5 years, who do not need, nor appreciate costly special effects.

It is a very basic and generic superhero origin story full of clichés and nothing original.

It could have been something funny like "Kick Ass" or it could have been some kind of deeper drama helping bigger children (5-10) finding their ways or providing tips for their problems... some sensitive, psychological stuff...

Unfortunately none of these were in the movie. It was just a story rewritten by a school boy, who has seen Spiderman, where he exchanged the word "Spiderman" with the word "Antboy".

There was no humor, nor suspension, nor drama, nothing.

The child actors made a decent job and the directing was solid craftsmanship, but that's all.

Antboy nearly put me to sleep
builderajs23 July 2017
Antboy is a superhero movie that succeeded in visual design, music, and some acting. Everything else though falls flat, or is sub par at best. The pacing is off, skipping past random parts that feel like they could be more fleshed out, Or holding on scenes that serve next to no point in the story. Speaking of story, this movie's isn't great. Nothing feels important, as scenes come ago with little impact. Characters make decisions that make no sense, and the movie picks up ideas, metaphors, and morale's that are abandoned as soon as they are picked up.

The biggest problem with Antboy is the characters. The main lead constantly acts bored and uninterested on whats going on around him, until around half way through the movie. The hero's sidekick also has a few problems, he's wants the lead to become a superhero, even though there is no reason at that point, besides that he has powers. No crime, no mystery, he just wants the hero to become a super hero because he likes super heroes. The rest of the cast isn't note worthy, there all bland and only serve the propose of furthering the plot. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but they don't help improve the movie in anyway.

The last problem with Antboy is there is next to no action in the entire movie. The only "action" in the movie is 1 fight with the villain at the very end, at that scene was just one punch! Yes he defeated the bad guy in one punch! All other action is off screen so they don't have to show it or is so brief that it barley counts. It made the movie feel even more empty. That's a good word to describe this movie, Empty. With no reason to care for the characters, little action and bad pacing at the end of the movie you just feel, Empty.

Excellent Movie...Critics Too Harsh
somedaze-200-76736831 December 2014
This is an excellent movie more attuned for children but cute/watchable for adults as well.. Critics forget what children like. They compare this to Spiderman because they want to see a Spiderman type of superhero movie that entertains adults. When they don't get that, they decide to tear into the movie saying it's a Spiderman ripoff. Sorry, critics, superhero movies, like they use to make them, can be built for children without implied sexuality, bad language, and soaked in darkness. This movie was beautifully shot and didn't need high tech gadgetry to entertain well. It was funny too (e.g. the kid's oblivious loser parents). It's also original (or at least unusual) in having a child portray a superhero.

Needed taller ants.
Bernie44448 October 2023
12-year-old Pelle (Oscar Dietz) is bitten by a malevolent ant (you could see the look on the ant's face at the time of the incident.)

Naturally, he gains superpowers such as sticky fingers. What is he to do?

Aided by a friend, who is enamored of super-powered beings, Antboy gains an identity and a costume (with a cloak.)

He goes through all the psychological problems one an ant-isapate.

Does he learn the value of friends, or will he be the object of biting humor?

Danish actress Amalie Kruse Jensen plays Isa!

Frank Thiel was born on 24 July 1970 in Denmark Plays the Flea!

Just a tad too elementary acting and dialog (even for children.)

Has an unexplainable charm...
monkweirdo24 February 2017
While the acting is horrible, the story is bit dumb and is filled with logical flaws, it indeed has a charm. I'm happy I found this on TV once. The characters are quite interesting, the villain is relatable, the hero is quite unique. The 2nd episode is much better but I'd give this one a 9/10 too.

SUPER EXPERT FILM!
kupcr22 October 2020
I really liked this Danish Superhero movie ANTBOY, a quirky yet engaging movie that both celebrates and has fun with the conventions of the superhero story as chronicled in both movies and comic books. The overdubbing of this film in English was expertly done. Danish actor, 12 year old Oscar Dietz, plays a character named Pelle Nohrman who gets bitten by an ant and he's a lot like Spiderman. I really felt the tension between Pelle and the flea, who might I say, is the perfect villain. This movie is great for people of all ages and anyone can get a kick out of Pelle when he pees acid for the first time. Danish actress Amalie Kruse Jensen plays Isa!

A Calmer Type of Super-Hero
rannynm22 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Antboy is based on a popular Danish comic book series and although I have never read the comic series, I think this movie is pretty cool. It is funny and has a small amount of action. It is really good and I think other kids would enjoy it too. This movie is about a boy named Pelle who is bitten by a rare and genetically altered ant. This ant gives Pelle superpowers. Eventually, Pelle realizes these super powers only work when he eats sugar. He finds out his real powers when he runs into a boy named Wilhelm, who later becomes his friend and helps him discover what super powers he has. Pelle decides that his super hero name is going to be Antboy. When a super villain named "The Flea" captures a girl and invades the school, Antboy has to figure out how to stop him. The main characters in the movie are Pelle, Wilhelm, Ida and the Flea. My favorite character in this movie is Wilhelm because he is a really nice guy and he is the reason Pelle decides to help people and become Antboy. He also loves comics and, while I wouldn't say I love comics, I do like them. My favorite part in the movie is when Pelle figures out his super powers. He can bite through hard things. He can climb walls. He is really strong and his pee is acid. Sadly, his super hero powers only work when he has eaten sugar. Sometimes he doesn't realize he has eaten any sugar at all. Sometimes he sleepwalks and eats all the candy in the house. I recommend this movie for ages 5 to 10 because it is really good with a lot of weird and quirky action. It is more of a movie for younger kids since teens and adults usually prefer films with more action. Reviewed by Anthony A, KIDS FIRST! Film Critic.

Very fun
ThunderKing614 August 2020
Antboy is one of those lesser known, great films that doesn't get the respect it deserves.

When I first say it I was amazed on the quality, effect and the humor of this new hero.

Antboy is underrated and I wish people knew more about him.

A film with an passion but not with enough money
arnorsmarigunnarsson17 August 2023
This film is great in all places but you can sometimes see this was not made by an million dollar studio, I praise the suit a lot but in kinda needs a chin strap but other than that it's a very compelling storyline, the villain is a bit overweight but that didn't bother me at all since he littering drinks bloodblood, the attack on the school is great, very well shot a little campy but great, the CGI is very good at someolaces but can be very bad at the same time including the flea jumping in the air, the final showdown, there are also things that don't make sense like why doesn't antboy fight anyone I this film but otherweis its very good.

Finally a movie for the whole family at least a superhero movie for the whole family critics are to harsh on movies cause critics just want a blockbuster Christopher Nolan movie or a Zack Snyder superhero movie or J. J. abrams take on Star Wars or Star Trek!!! Ahem. I am getting cared away with critics!! But this film that was not made in the USA it was like made in Denmark but who cares this movie totally rocks not sucks but rocks!!! See critics we don't need a superhero movie with sex and dark themes ( and plots ) plus with strong Language or a to confusing plot kids can't understand!!! The acting is fair that's the only thing that's crappy the plot rocks and it is not a dark movie ether!! This is not a Spider-Man ripoff critics!!! This is a fun movie about a boy that gets but by a ant ( hey critics it's NOT a ripoff)!!! And uses his power to help people!!! Plus it has like a little romance to ( or at least a crush) hey critics her name ain't Mary Jane!! Then the villain is called the flea ( kinda crappy)!! Ahem I'm getting carried away again sorry!!! But yeah a little spoiler but that's all!!! So enjoy movie nerds!!!
