Chris Farley — the legendary comedy actor behind Tommy Boy and countless Saturday Night Live performances — is getting the biopic treatment.
Emmy winner Paul Walter Hauser will star in the project that has actor-filmmaker Josh Gad attached to direct. Saturday Night Live patriarch Lorne Michaels will produce via his Broadway video banner.
The screenplay will be written by sought after duo Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber based on the New York Times best-selling biography The Chris Farley Show: A Biography in Three Acts by Tom Farley Jr. and Tanner Colby.
The project, which is currently being pitched around town, has the blessing of the Farley family.
Farley rose to fame as a player on Saturday Night Live alongside castmembers Adam Sandler and David Spade, known for his energetic and physical performances. Famous for sketches that saw him play Bill Swerski’s Superfans (“da Bears!”), an overzealous motivational speaker (“living in...

Elvis Presley‘s “(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear” sounds like another 1950s doo-wop song. With its focus on teddy bears, it seems like it should be a children’s song. Despite that, it’s more suggestive than most 1950s hits. Some of the lyrical choices in the song are pretty questionable.
Elvis Presley’s ‘(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear’ isn’t for kids
Plenty of great rock songs are children’s songs, including The Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine,” Peter, Paul and Mary’s “Puff, the Magic Dragon,” and basically everything by The Monkees. Elvis’ “(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear” is anything but that. It’s a song where Elvis asks his lover to touch him like she’s touching a teddy bear. How this didn’t upset the censors at the time is beyond me.
Furthermore, Elvis asks his lover to put a chain around his neck and lead him around.

Teddy Bears can be scary too. At least that’s what the fine folks behind Imaginary are counting on. Opening last weekend, the latest from Blumhouse takes spooky toys in a new direction. Directed by Jeff Wadlow, who has had a couple of collaborations with Blumhouse, the thriller brings horror to the family. Starring DeWanda Wise, Taegen Burns, Pyper Braun, and Tom Payne who portray a family that faces an unexpected terror when a young girl discovers a cute little teddy bear.
Having spoken to Jeff Wadlow before, I’ve always found him to be terrific to talk with. Having sat down with him, along with Jason Blum, a couple weeks ago, Jeff and I continued our conversation the day before the film’s opening. During the extended chat, the director discussed the idea of a scary bear, and how that became the creepy toy in Imaginary. The filmmaker discussed his previous efforts,...

If there was one rock ‘n’ roll star in the world of pop art, it was Andy Warhol. He crossed paths with classic rock stars numerous times and even painted the cover of one of John Lennon’s albums. The record in question has an interesting reference to John’s childhood. In addition, the “Imagine” singer revealed what he thought of Warhol and one of the painter’s contemporaries.
The cover Andy Warhol made for a John Lennon album is stunning
In 1986, six years after John’s death, his estate released the album Menlove Ave. It was named after the street John lived on as a child. The record gave fans a peek into who John was. It includes some of his lesser-known songs as well as covers of classic hits such as “To Know Him Is to Love Him” by The Teddy Bears and “Angel Baby” by Rosie and the Originals.

We’ve been keeping an eye on the progress of writer/director Craig Rees’ film Goldilocks and the Three Bears: Death and Porridge, which puts a horror thriller twist on a classic children’s story, ever since it was first announced several months ago. We still don’t know of a release date for this one, but there is a positive update to share, as Variety has reported that international sales company Iuvit Media Sales has secured distribution deals for Goldilocks and the Three Bears: Death and Porridge in multiple territories while presenting it to potential buyers at the European Film Market. Buyers include Gussi Films for Latin America, Pioneer for the Philippines, and Front Row for the Middle East.

“The Bear” will return with its third season in June on Hulu, FX Chairman John Landgraf announced Friday at the Television Critics Association winter press tour.
A specific date was not announced, but “The Bear’s” first two seasons premiered on June 23, 2022, and June 22, 2023, respectively, so one could assume Season 3 will arrive on June 20. Landgraf confirmed that Season 3 will be a binge drop once again, just like the first two, and not a weekly release.
“When we came back for Season 2, we debated — since we knew now we had a hit — can we milk it a little bit? Can we roll it out over weeks? The more ‘Bears,’ the better,” Landgraf said during his executive session. “But then we just thought, you know what, that’s a rotten thing to do — change it up for the audience. The way [creator and showrunner Christopher Storer] makes it, even though the episodes are separate, there...

With the “big game” only a few weeks away, do you need some movie fuel for your football “fever”? Something brand new, I should say since most gridiron fans probably have their shelves stocked with Any Given Sunday, The Replacements, and Rudy. Well, Amazon has just the thing with a raucous comedy about a ragtag bunch of preteen misfits in peewee football, coached by a guy whose heart is slowly melted by them. Sounds like a variation of last year’s football, er soccer, and adult inspired by real events comedy set in American Samoa, Next Goal Wins. Yes, it’s a tried and true formula, but this flick has a twist in its casting, as the coach is played by rapper Snoop Dogg. He provides the “spark” (if you get my drift) and the inspiration for the movie’s title, The Underdoggs.

The magic of a good Christmas is an unparalleled childhood experience, but it always ends with the anticlimactic holiday hangover that is New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Did the news of No Bears deservingly bagging the Special Jury Prize at the 2022 Venice Film Festival slightly brighten the cell Jafar Panahi is locked up? I doubt it would mean a whole lot to one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, whose voice has been reaching us secretly ever since the Iranian government banned him from pursuing his art in 2010. A cake to hide “This Is Not A Movie” and the covert, lionhearted efforts that went into making and sharing No Bears with the world are simply not the kind of harrowing ordeals a director like Panahi should be going through. Yet, for someone whose self-reflectively bold and politically charged artistic endeavors are perceived as a critical threat by the government, Panahi’s proved himself to be a warrior of sorts by never allowing the regime to muffle his voice. What I’ve never felt dampens the experience...

To the music world, the power of Taylor Swift is nothing new. But this week, the sports world got a taste of just what the singer-songwriter and her Swifties can do.
After the “Cruel Summer” singer made an appearance at the Chicago Bears and Kansas City Chiefs game Sunday to support football star Travis Kelce, it sent her fans into a frenzy. Especially since the tight end has previously been open about having romantic feelings for Swift.
Though neither has confirmed their relationship status, that didn’t stop them from becoming the center of conversation across social media, sports outlets and more.
But the NFL wasn’t the only professional sports league talking about Swift. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said on Thursday’s episode of ESPN’s First Take that Swift should stop hanging out with Kelce so he can set her up with one of the players on his NBA team.

Paddington in Peru, the third film in the Paddington franchise, has added a newcomer to its cast. Oscar winner Olivia Colman is in talks to play a role in the StudioCanal feature about the beloved bear.
Ben Whishaw has long voiced the titular bear, who in past films was seen getting into adventures with the Brown family. Exact plot details are being kept under wraps but the movie will see Paddington travel from his home in London to his native home of “darkest Peru.”
Sources note that Colman’s character will run a retirement home for bears in Peru. (Fans of the Paddington franchise will remember that Paddington’s Aunt Lucy lives in The Home for Retired Bears.)
Paddington in Peru will be the feature debut of Dougal Wilson, the award-winning commercial and music video director. Heyday and StudioCanal are producing the feature. Filming will be done on location in London and Peru.

Sources note that Colman’s character will run a retirement home for bears in Peru. (Fans of the Paddington franchise will remember that Paddington’s Aunt Lucy lives in The Home for Retired Bears.)

Imprisoned Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi has sent a message of defiance to the Tehran regime.
Panahi, one of Iran’s most acclaimed directors, whose latest film No Bears screens in competition at the Venice Film Festival next week, was arrested in Tehran last month and is currently serving a six-year prison sentence. As the Venice Film Festival celebrates Iranian cinema — there are four Iranian films screening at the 79th Biennale — back home in Tehran, Iranian filmmakers and artists are facing the harshest crackdown in decades.
The hardline government of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has stepped up pressure on dissident artists and all critics of the regime to toe the line. In July, authorities arrested three prominent directors: Mostafa Aleahmad (2009’s Poosteh), 2020 Berlin’s Golden Bear winner Mohammad Rasoulof (There Is No Evil) and Jafar Panahi, winner of Venice’s Golden Lion for Dayereh (2000) and of Berlin’s Golden Bear for Taxi (2015).

Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls were one of the greatest sports dynasties and a worldwide phenomenon in the 1990s, so much so that for the documentary “The Last Dance,” you can’t just get the usual basketball suspects to share what that era meant to them.
For the epic 10-part documentary series “The Last Dance” coming to ESPN in June 2020, people as diverse as Barack Obama, Justin Timberlake and Carmen Electra all sit down for interviews alongside Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Steve Kerr, Dennis Rodman, Phil Jackson and many, many more sports legends.
“The Last Dance” in particular follows the Bulls during their 1997-98 season, Jordan’s final season as a Chicago Bull and the team’s last championship run of their dynasty. A camera crew was given unprecedented access to the team during that season when all eyes were already on them, when Oprah was inviting Jordan to her show,...

A classic Italian children’s book from 1945 gets an update in master illustrator Lorenzo Mattotti’s feature debut, “The Bears’ Famous Invasion of Sicily.” Beautifully drawn with bold colors and appealing shapes, the film’s style is classic animation at its best, clear and pleasing, calculated to charm children and adults alike. The revised storyline, however, about how bears and humans clash, make amends, and then realize they’re too different to live together, can lead to unfortunate and inadvertent interpretations neither Mattotti nor the original author Dino Buzzati intended. In addition, the narrative’s pace, whizzing by from one scene to the next, frustrates an adult’s desire to relish the often-striking images, making the film most suitable for kids incapable of critically engaging with metaphor.
“The Bears’ Famous Invasion” first appeared in print toward the end of World War 2, written and illustrated by the multi-talented Buzzati, whose novel...

Long-serving Disney executive Jean-François Camilleri has announced his departure from the company. Documentaries are rarely big money makers, but we talk about them as having the power to influence change and motivate people to action in a way even narrative films cannot. So when a documentary does make a splash at the box office, it’s an even bigger surprise. This summer, “Rbg,” “Three Identical Strangers” and “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” are big hits when it comes to documentaries. And the Mister Rogers doc is well on its way to cracking this list of the top 15 grossing documentaries at the box office. This list is an interesting mix of political, nature and concert documentaries, and several of them likewise went on to win Oscars and critical acclaim. All numbers are domestic totals via Box Office Mojo.

The latest Earth Day release from Disneynature, Monkey Kingdom, is the charming story of Maya, a toque macaque living in the rainforest of Sri Lanka, whose world is changed when her son Kip is born. Anxious for her son to have all the best that life in their troop has to offer, Maya tries, not always successfully, to climb the social ladder and advance up the pecking order of the troop. At the top sits alpha male Raja, and his harem of top females and offspring that get the best beds, the best food and the best treatment.
After an attack on their home, Castle Rock, by a neighboring troop of monkeys, Raja is injured and the troop must now rely on Maya and her mate Kumar’s jungle smarts and street savvy to survive. One particularly hilarious sequence shows the local town and markets overrun with monkeys, stealing every...
