On the morning before the reopening of the Quad Cinema in New York, where two impressive features - Terence Davies' A Quiet Passion and Katell Quillévéré's Heal The Living (Réparer Les Vivants) - are now screening, Maura Axelrod, the director of Maurizio Cattelan: Be Right Back, met with me at Foragers in Chelsea to give some insight on her relationship to Cattelan's work and how their friendship developed.
We touched on a number of his artworks, Him in Agnès Varda's film Ydessa, the Bears and etc., Michelangelo Frammartino's post-Alberi Pinocchio project, Disney and America, Gianfranco Rosi's Sacro Gra Cattelan moment, and wanting "the works to just appear as they do in the world" in her film.

Director Michelangelo Frammartino unveiled his latest project at Den Frie Center for Contemporary Art in Copenhagen in November. Alberi, his stunning 26-minute video installation, which first screened at MoMA P.S.1 last spring, was receiving its European premiere at Cph:dox, a festival that awarded its top prize to his second feature, Le Quattro Volte, in 2010. Like that film, Alberi is a hybrid work that combines documentary and staged performance, but operates in the space between video installation and cinema. Ever since its creation in 2003 as a response to the World Trade Center attacks, the Tribeca Film Festival has gone on to bring entertainment and events to the public, and it has collaborated with the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Public Space 1 (PS1) to do just that.
The Tribeca Film Festival was made possible by Robert DeNiro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff as a way for filmmakers to reach an audience. Ever since the first festival in 2002, the festival has featured over 1,400 films from all around the world in over 80 countries. The festival has allowed for four million visitors that generated over $750 million for the city of New York.
Running from April 18 through April 28, MoMA PS1 featured Alberi, an Italian film that played on a loop until the end of the festival. Directed by Michelangelo Frammartino, the film Alberi is about the practice of an ancient tradition in Satriano, Southern Italy.

On a fresh sunlit afternoon, at the start of the Tribeca Film Festival, when April was at its least cruel, Artistic Director Frédéric Boyer introduced the world premiere of Michelangelo Frammartino's extraordinarily seductive 28 minute continuous cinematic installation Alberi at MoMA PS1.
“One of my interests is to try to define what beauty means today – not just normal beauty but absolute beauty, the kind you find in animals, especially in birds,” Miuccia Prada stated in her 2012 Met Costume Institute exhibition Impossible Conversations. The intricate tree men could be sublime inspiration for her next collection. As usual, Tribeca presented quite the diverse batch of shorts this year. There are plenty of new voices from New York City, a whole slew of international filmmakers, and a wide variety of documentary and experimental films. In the mix is some outrageous humor, heartrending human stories and a few uncompromising works of cinematic vision. Yet out of this wide selection, a handful inevitably rose right to the top. Here are the best ten short films from this year’s edition of the Tribeca Film Festival – in alphabetical order. Alberi, by Michelangelo Frammartino Fans of Michelangelo Frammartino’s 2010 critical hit Le Quattro Volte might know what to expect from his new short, which played on a loop at MoMA’s PS1 in Queens in association with Tribeca. His style is one of breathtaking humility, searching for the grand beauty in the simple lives of Italian farmers. Alberi, which is Italian for “trees,” looks...

On April 18, 2012, Frédéric Boyer announced at the Tribeca Film Festival opening media breakfast for his inaugural year as Artistic Director, that he wanted to have more "World Premières" as he did when he was heading the Directors’ Fortnight program at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2013, he has succeeded triumphantly with the MoMA PS1 collaboration for Michelangelo Frammartino's Alberi and other innovative approaches to cinema, like Paul Verhoeven's latest film Tricked (Steekspel), which was presented in the Tribeca Talks After the Movie series. I asked Verhoeven at the North American premiere about the birth of his Dada Dial M For Murder moment and got an answer that revealed the process of the unprecedented script collaboration. Eric Steel's devastatingly luminescent Kiss The Water also had its world premiere at this year's festival. The documentary about a Scottish fishing fly-maker transforms itself...

Tribeca Film Festival's Artistic Director Frédéric Boyer and I met up for a conversation at MoMA PS1 during Michelangelo Frammartino's World Premiere of the breathtaking 28 minute continuous cinematic installation Alberi in the Vw Dome. This is Boyer's second year at Tribeca, after running the Directors’ Fortnight program at the Cannes Film Festival. We discussed how to bring nature into an urban setting through films like Bruno Barreto's Reaching For The Moon, Reha Erdem's Jîn, Whitewash, directed by Emanuel Hoss-Desmarais, Hisham Zaman's Before Snowfall, and Red Obsession, directed by David Roach and Warwick Ross.
