Nice fairytale adaptation

"Hänsel und Gretel" is a definite contender for most popular fairytale from the gigantic Brothers Grimm collection. This one-hour tale here came out during the holidays of 2012. As usual with these fairytale movies, the protagonists are not as known as the rest of the cast. It's almost always the case that very established grown up actors support the story's heroes. And here it is especially true as the two central characters are still children and completely unknown. Devid Striesow (only a very small role) and Anja Kling are very much known. Von Bülow and Heine are also slightly popular. "Tatort"-fans will appreciate seeing Heine and Striesow in this movie together as well.

The film's director is quite experienced in his field already and same goes for the writer. The latter also worked on quite a few other fairytale movies for ARD and ZDF. Thumbs up for the two child actors as well. They really did a fine job here. Initially, I was slightly unsure about Anja Kling as the witch. In my opinion, she is fairly attractive, but not a particularly gifted actress. However, she plays her part well and it probably helps that it's pretty much impossible to go too much over the top if you play a witch in a fantasy movie. I am glad to see this film received an unusually high amount of awards recognition for these kind of films, even an Adolf Grimme Award nomination. Finally, I would like to mention how good this film was in terms of sets, costumes and all other optical factors. The gingerbread house (more of a candy house) was very nicely done and I also liked the look of the huge meals the witch made for the kids. Obelix would have had a great time too. Entertaining sixty minutes. Recommended.
