Beware the Ides of March, but do keep an eye out for the lineup of titles taking over Screambox this month. There are a couple Canadian genre titles in the mix this month. If you know where to look in Exit Humanity you can see ScreenAnarchy lord and master Todd Brown play a zombie extra and take a bullet to the head. Back in the day, Jesse Thomas Cook, director of current titles Cult Hero and The Hyperborean made us squirm with his 2013 flick, Septic Man. One of the earlier monsters-are-attractive-and-hot series was BBC series Being Human. The first season will drop on March 22nd and another season will arrive every week after that. And if you feel that your life has...

The ultimate reality show turns into a deadly nightmare, as a crew of TV personalities, including Sheila Smyth (Lisa Solberg), a professional organizer; Dr. Lance Ebe (Tony Burgess), a psychotherapist with an alarming patient relapse rate of 94%; ghost hunters Caleb and Chloe Black (Ry Barrett and Elma Begovic); and renovators Derek ‘Duke’ Jago (Marcus Ludlow) and The Falcon (Justin Darmanin), attempt to reform a legendary hoarder who owns four condemned and haunted properties. It’s the pilot episode for their comeback series ‘Extremely Haunted Hoarders.’ What could possibly go wrong?

Tagline: "A Life and Death Intervention." A trailer for The Hoard has debuted this week. From directors Jesse Thomas Cook (Septic Man) and Matt Wiele (Exit Humanity), this horror comedy involves a "reality tv crew" and a series of condemned houses. The crew hopes to get a hoarder back on his feet. But, this might be impossible with the amount of trash and bodies, housed inside the buildings. The Hoard is set to have its World Premiere, in Toronto, this November 25th, at the Blood in the Snow Film Festival. Details on this release are hosted here. The trailer is a funny one. Some of the crew are unable to get past the piles of garbage. Another crew member almost falls to his death, at the end of a hall. Dead cats keep turning up. And, one woman runs from this hoarding nightmare as she loses her sanity. This trailer will surely brighten your dark,...

I don’t believe in Karma. But there may be something to it. I’m sitting in my basement getting a whiff of my own shit while trying to write about a movie called Septic Man. Nothing like a good rain to get the sewer backed up. Ugh. Here’s hoping I can get power through this while holding my nose.
Water contamination in a small Canadian town forces an evacuation. That is when plumber Jack (Jason David Brown) is approached by a strange man (Julian Richings) who asks him to look into the cause. Years ago, Jack was able to fix a similar problem and received no recognition. After convincing his pregnant wife (Molly Dunsworth) to leave without him, he goes to investigate at the water treatment plant. Unfortunately for Jack he his trapped in a giant septic tank by metal mouthed, non talker, Lord Auch (Tim Burd) and...

As a survivor of Septic Man‘s sewer-sludge yuckiness, I saw Bite‘s disgusting reputation not as a warning, but as an invitation. What’s a little gross-out body horror capable of, really? Sure, Fantasia Festival attendees reported that Chad Archibald’s metamorphosis tale caused viewers to “faint, puke, and need medical attention,” but after watching it myself, I question the constitution of said fainters. Maybe it’s just because I’ve witnessed the worst of the worse (an occupational hazard), or because I’ve been blessed with my father’s iron gullet, but Bite never sent me reaching for a barf bag. While this might disappoint true masochists, Bite doesn’t need perverse gimmicks to win over horror fans – there’s a story worth watching all in itself, even if it won’t make you vomit.

It would seem, at least on paper, that the director of low-budget quasi-wrestling monster movie Monsters Brawl and the (literal) shit-monster movie Septic Man; teaming up the writer of the neo-classic Pontypool for a movie that encapsuates an American gothic vibe would not work. On the one hand you have someone’s whose work is filled with subtlety, on the other… shit-monster (and yes, I know Burgess also penned Septic Man)! Yet somehow, despite some lapses in judgement and a conclusion that falls off the cliff somewhat, The Hexecutioners really works.

Some films are just crap, but Septic Man is literally about it. In the first few minutes you may get to see a lot of human waste, but if truth be told if the movie has a bigger problem than that… it may be slightly constipated.
Jack (Jason David Brown) is a sewage worker who is known to be good at his job. When government official Phil Prosser (Julian Richings) gives him an offer he can’t (or isn’t) allowed to refuse he finds himself investigating problems in the city water system which are leading to a plague of diseases, even death. When he finds the source though he finds himself trapped in the water treatment facility at the mercy of two strange brothers intent on killing him.

Condemned is so campily grotesque, that I’m surprised it doesn’t come donning Troma’s seal of approval. The effects suffer from a lack of budget, and the premise is absolutely asinine, but where Troma enjoys making art out of minimal production value, Eli Morgan Gesner can’t quite find the same wacky dynamic.

Also: details on Dracula's prop auction, XLrator Media's 24 Hour Rental, a video tribute to Friday the 13th Part VIII called "Voorhees Stomp", a new poster for The Hexecutioners, and release details for Krampus: The Reckoning.
Casper Van Dien Q&A: "June tells the story of nine-year-old June (Brice) who has been shuffled in and out of foster homes for years. And though she tries to be good, no matter where she goes, a trail of chaos and terror seems to follow. It’s only when June is sent to live with a new couple, Lily (Pratt) and Dave (Van Dien), that it looks as if things might finally work out. Except this innocent child with the face of an angel is possessed by an ancient, malevolent entity that has hijacked her soul.

Welcome to the latest edition of our regular crowdfunding feature here on Nerdly – Back This! – where we take a look at some of the cool content taking the crowdfunding route on sites such as Indiegogo, Sponsume and Kickstarter. In this edition we’re taking a look at two new movie campaigns: a creature feature and a fantastic sounding Troma documentary.

One Drop is a new horror creature feature from director Tricia Lee, which tells the story of a single mother who wakes up in the basement of a medical facility only to discover that everyone around her is dead and she is somehow nine months pregnant. Calling back to the minimalist sci-fi stories of yesteryear, Ejecta blends found footage camerawork with an Area 51-esque experiment that wants to prove the existence of alien lifeforms. Penned by genre favorite Tony Burgess (Pontypool/Septic Man), it’s a story about paranoia that hits on a possession arc we typically see connected to exorcisms and demonic overtakings – but it’s not one that dares to push the envelope.
What’s been said about extraterrestrial invasions is restated by Ejecta in a lot of the same ways, which only reminds us of past films that have executed interplanetary thrills with far more energy. Whether you’re thinking of the basement scene in Signs, or any first-person chase scene from the Vicious brothers’ Extraterrestrial, directors Chad Archibald and Matt Wiele are only able to produce another bland case of flying saucers and gangly spacemen. Nothing more, and nothing less.

Production has completed on Canada’s latest and wildest genre film, Holy Hell – a collaboration between first time writer and director Ryan Laplante, veteran sound designer George Flores (Antisocial, Septic Man, The Collapsed, Monster Brawl), composer Adrian Ellis (The Scarehouse, Out With Dad) and scream queen Alysa King (Berkshire County).
In the vein of recent horror/comedies like Machete and Hobo with a Shotgun, Holy Hell is a modern take on classic action, horror and exploitation film tropes. And best of all? The goal of Laplante’s movie is to break through every limit set by film, taste and reasonable societal behavior: all with anarchic glee! Check out the trailer below:
Holy Hell is the over-the-top, outrageous, sexually-deviant, blood-drenched story of Father Augustus Bane: a priest pushed too far who begins praying to a revolver and hunting down the gangsters who killed his parishioners.

Friday was Day Two of Toronto After Dark 2014, and the theater was packed for both of the evenings screenings. Hellmouth had its World Premiere, ABCs Of Death 2 had its Toronto Premiere, and the sold out crowds were cheering and ready for both movies. It’s kind of a big deal that both of these screenings sold out, as that means that the first four consecutive films at this year’s festival were completely full. I believe that is a new Tadff record. The festival certainly has grown over the last 8 years, and it’s exciting to watch as more and more films sell out with each iteration.
The night kicked off with Pupa, an anime-style animated mindfuck of a short film that was both entertaining and bizarre. It certainly was a great match for Hellmouth, which is about as Wtf-inducing as they come (more on that in minute), so...

Back in their comfy armchairs and ready to talk all things trash, horror and schlock, Matt and Dom all but immediately hurl themselves into a (often stinking) pile of B-movie mayhem. Kicking off with reviews of the pretty awful Leprechaun: Origins and Jersey Shore Massacre, the guys then move on to pastures greener with reviews of Septic Man and Wer, then straight into horror Nirvana with Dead Snow 2: Read Vs Dead. As the horror season approaches, viewers need to know which films are egregious tricks and which are tasty treats – and The Graveyard Shift is crazy enough to traverse everything the horror genre has to offer in search of hidden gems!
Rounding off the show, the guys bring two beloved films from their respective collections to the table, with Matt repping 2005′s Feast and Dom adoringly pawing over Norman Mailer’s grossly under-appreciated good-bad masterpiece Tough Guys Don’t Dance.

Sneak Peek footage from director Jeese Thomas Cook's horror feature "Septic Man", starring Jason David Brown as a sewage worker who ends up transforming into a hideous mutant by way of toxic sewage:
"...'Jack' (Brown) is an average sewage worker who has been asked to investigate a water contamination in his hometown that has forced everyone else, including his pregnant wife 'Shelley' (Molly Dunsworth) to evacuate.
"Jack decides to investigate the local sewage plant but ends up getting trapped in a septic tank by 'Lord Auch' (Tim Burd) and his brother 'Giant' (Robert Maillet). They refuse to let Jack out despite his pleas and the toxic sewage eventually begins to transform Jack into the hideous mutant 'Septic Man'..."

A more serious take on slime punk films like Toxic Avenger and Slime City, Jesse Thomas Cook's Septic Man (review) has more in common with Cronenberg’s tragic transformation tale The Fly.
Thanks mostly to the twisted mind of screenwriter Tony Burgess (Pontypool), Septic Man has a lot more going on under the surface than just a basic story about a man trapped underground inside a tank of absolute filth who begins to transform into something monstrous.
Director Cook spoke with us about the film and how it was one of the hardest, grossest experiences of his professional life thus far - but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have a hell of a time doing it.
DC: How was your experience at Fantasia with your latest sci-fi film Ejecta? Is there a favorite project you and [Tony] Burgess have worked on so far?

For the third week of August, there are a handful of great horror and sci-fi titles being released this week on DVD and Blu-ray including Jim Jarmusch’s stunning vampire love story Only Lovers Left Alive, Ti West’s The Sacrament, Scream Factory’s high definition release of Leviathan and much more.
Spotlight Titles:
Only Lovers Left Alive (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Blu-ray & DVD)
The tale of two fragile and sensitive vampires, Adam (Tom Hiddleston) and Eve (Tilda Swinton), who have been lovers for centuries. Both are cultured intellectuals with an all-embracing passion for music, literature and science, who have evolved to a level where they no longer kill for sustenance, but still retain their innate wildness. Their love story has endured several centuries but their debauched idyll is threatened by the uninvited arrival of Eve’s carefree little sister Ava (Mia Wasikowska) who hasn’t yet learned to tame her wilder instincts.

The first three minutes of director Jesse Thomas Cook’s transformative Septic Man is literally a disgusting mess, and that’s just the beginning of things to come. Though more serious and dour than the playful tag line may lead towards, that being Shit Just Got Surreal, Cook’s transfiguring man is a makeup effect to witness. Unfortunately, the film doesn’t exactly know where to go narratively or just how much fun it should have with the messy conditions.
Jack (Jason David Brown) is sewage worker living in a small, middle-class town that gets evacuated due to a health concern. The symptomatic assessment involves everything implied with the title of the film. Jack is confronted by a government employee who offers him a large sum of money to continue working in the infected area. Married and with his wife expecting, Jack accepts to ensure his family is taken care of.

Title: Septic Man Director: Jesse Thomas Cook Starring: Jason David Brown, Molly Dunsworth, Julian Richings, Tim Burd, Robert Maillet, Stephen McHattie A film with a title as schlocky as “Septic Man” has… well, a certain potential, let’s be honest. And yet this willfully distasteful Canadian horror flick — which almost emits an unwholesome effluvia of human waste and other bodily fluids directly through the screen — is borderline incomprehensible and thoroughly unengaging throughout, lacking even in enough distinctive personality to make it worthwhile for self-flagellating fans of low-budget shock and gore. The film unfolds in a small town in Ontario, Canada, where an opening credits narration informs viewers that there’s something in the [ Read More ]

The Canadian town of Collinwood is suffering a serious sanitation problem. Something has come along and gummed up the works. People are getting sick, evacuations are in order, death looms et cetera…basically, something stinks. In a situation as dire as this, when shit’s going down, there’s only one trusted name in the game and that is Septic Man. Jack (Jason David Brown) is thee titular septic man, a chap of few words with a rough edged can-do spirit. Earlier in his career he saved the town from suffering through shoddy infrastructure and prevented a whole bunch of crap from happening. If there’s a problem with the pipes, he’s the man of the hour. Jack is a reluctant fellow though. He has a kid on the way and a wife that just wants him to be home longer than he’s away. But they have bills to pay, responsibilities...

In the new Canadian horror movie Septic Man, Jason David Brown plays a sewage worker who falls into a septic tank and gradually mutates into a monstrous beastie. Brown won Best Actor in a Horror Film award at last year’s Fantastic Fest genre festival for his performance—but this gross-out film is not one to watch while you’re eating. Then again…
“At Fantastic Fest they actually handed out chocolate pudding in the middle of the screening,” recalls Septic Man director Jesse Thomas Cook. “It was a funny touch to see people eating chocolate pudding while Septic Man was knee-deep in the sewage.

Septic Man loves vomit above all other bodily fluids (though it loves those, too) -- fitting, considering its generally putrid quality. With a premise that recalls The Toxic Avenger but without an ounce of its smart superhero action or satire, Jesse Thomas Cook’s film follows septic expert Jack (Jason David Brown) as he’s paid by a mystery man (Julian Richings) to investigate his town’s horrid contaminated-water crisis. As citizens evacuate, including Jack’s pregnant wife (Molly Dunsworth), Jack goes to the local irrigation facility, falls in a hole, and finds that the problem is being caused by dead bodies that were dumped into the water system by chainsaw-wielding psycho Lord Auch (Tim Burd), who speaks in animalistic chir...

Jesse Thomas Cook's Septic Man is available on VOD in the U.S. today (August 12th) and will open in select cinemas on Friday, August 15th. For those of you who will be watching the film at home we have come up with a drinking game with the help of the director himself. Cook did a quick review of his film and has some suggestions if you want to go really hard core. To start, chug a beer whenever someone pukes. This happens often enough that you will get hosed. And if you want to get completely annihilated then also drink when someone drinks sewage or blood, or, when someone opens the lid to the sewer. Now, we want everyone to have fun with any movie they watch. We'd rather...

I really really got a kick out of Septic Man. Its not only a personal favorite in 2014 its a vile sometimes revolting picture that proves exploitation flicks come in all different sorts of packages and are not all subpar releases. This is a film that looks awesome and delivers the gruesome goods that genre fans crave on a constant basis. Its a picture worthy of more than a single viewing and its likely to snag the hearts of a respectable crowd.

The opening scene to 'Septic Man' has been released on to the internet and it certainly does push the limits of gross-out comedy! The movie from the creators 'Exit Humanity' and 'Pontypool' will be unleashed on 15 August and looks to be doing as much as it possibly can to help bring your lunch up. The movie from director Jesse Thomas Cook and penned by Tony Burgess stars Jason David Brown, Molly Dunsworth, Robert Maillet, Tim Burd, Julian Richings ('Supernatural') and Stephen McHattie ('Watchmen'). If there’s ever been a film that made me feel like I needed a shower afterwards, it’s Jesse Thomas Cook’s Septic Man. Much like the tagline states, “It’s a crappy job,” but someone has to watch it, right? If you can get past all the pooping, vomiting, rotting and festering, a unique story influenced by Lloyd Kaufman’s Toxic Avenger model might break through the cloud of odoriferous unpleasantry, but weaker stomachs will struggle to keep their lunch down. The good thing is, your tolerance will be tested within mere seconds of the films opening, so if gross-out body horror isn’t your schtick, no time is wasted introducing the disgusting lengths Cook plunges in order to deliver the most realistic depiction of sanitation-gone-wrong possible. If you can’t stand the smell, get out of the bathroom – as quickly as possible.

Welcome to The Last Horror Blog, a biweekly column on all things horror. Mark your calendars! ABCs of Death 2 gets a release date – I had pretty mixed feelings for the first ABCs of Death, the ambitious anthology project where directors were asked to make short films inspired by a letter of the alphabet, but the sequel is coming. If you liked the first film, then odds are you’re going to want to check out the second. The follow-up will officially debut on VOD services on October 2, followed by a limited theatrical run starting on Halloween. The new film features work from the Soska Sisters, Vincenzo Natali, Larry Fessenden and many more. R-rated Septic Man trailer might make you lose your lunch – What do you get when you cross the creators of...

I wish I could say that I'm really looking forward to seeing Jesse Thomas Cook's Septic Man but truth of the matter is, the very concept of this movie, written by the great Tony Burgess (of Pontypool fame), grosses me out.
Jason David Brown stars as Jack, a sewage worker working hard to uncover what is causing the town's water contamination problem. While working, he's trapped in a septic tank with no food or water and undergoes a transformation.
Judging from what little I've seen of the movie (the new clip and trailer below), it looks like Jack turns into some shit-covered creature and quite frankly, I'm not sure I have the stomach for that. It may not be for me but I don't doubt that Septic Man is going to be a must see for many a fan of gross-out horror.

Imagine the messiest bathroom you’ve ever seen. Now imagine it 100 times more disgusting and even then it probably doesn’t equal the horrendous confines of the restroom in the opening scene of Septic Man, due out later this month from Starz Digital Media. We have a clip featuring a bile-inducing bathroom that could be a plumber’s private hell.

During his investigation, he becomes trapped underground in a septic tank and undergoes a hideous transformation. Hailed as a “stunning” (Little Red Umbrella), “funny” (TwitchFilm), and “visceral story that will leave you shaken and desperate for a shower” (Rue Morgue Magazine), Septic Man is an odyssey into the darkest depths of gross-out horror.

The Alamo Drafthouse’s Fantastic Fest has a stellar rep around these parts, and it’s not hard to see why when you consider some of the indie titles that have played there in recent years. Last year alone saw Coherence, Grand Piano and Septic Man make their world premieres, and films like Blue Ruin, Afflicted, Witching & Bitching, The Sacrament and Borgman all land in the U.S. for the first time.
This year doesn’t look to be any different, with a terrific lineup of indie titles including boatloads of promising horror. We’ve got sequels like The ABCs of Death 2 and V/H/S Viral, and originals like Kevin Smith’s anticipated Tusk and The Babadook. Keep in mind this is only the first wave of film announcements for Fantastic Fest 2014 – we’ll keep you posted as more titles are confirmed for the festival, which runs in Austin,...
