Offbeat, deadpan comedy
poikkeus12 March 2015
With THE STRANGE LITTLE CAT, it's not a matter of reducing your expectations; it's more trying to change your expectations.

Over the course of a day in a cramped Berlin apartment, a busy family deals with the usual mundane details: eating breakfast, fixing a washing machine, watching unwashed plates pile up, watching a hacky-sack fly through the window. Some characters tell in-jokes that almost seem surreal at times. And there's also a dog and cat, who watch the activity with curiosity.

THE STRANGE LITTLE CAT not a documentary, but an almost verite family comedy. The whole film is shot at about kitchen counter level - the level where the film's "strange" cat wanders through the rooms. Once you get into the rhythm of the film, it's engrossing and frequently funny; it suggests that everyday life, as trivial as it might seem, has great value and interest, even when you might be tempted to think otherwise.

A beautiful video portrait of a family!
Reno-Rangan14 June 2016
Indeed a beautiful video portrait of a family and friends coming together for an evening. I wanted to like it more, but not impressed by the overall product. However, I liked very much the film theme, not very unique, yet simpler and different than those I've seen. The cat was the centre of the narration as the title suggests, but it was seen rarely within the video frame and sometimes the characters mentions it, but we know it was around there where our eyes can't reach.

On an ordinary day, about an ordinary family and their ordinary event which might remind you your own family or the others you're familiar with. I don't know the cast, but I liked their character displays. Each one offered so many topics on what they were doing, because I can easily say it was not completely written script, but they were improvised while the camera was on the roll. As the actors that's what they do, but as a viewer I must appreciate the effort. Even the kids were so impressive, yet like I said overall film fallen short by a slight margin.

I'm a semi-artist, those who are interested in the art would stare at the paintings for a very long time to observe the details closely like every visible stroke the artist did. Likewise, in this, the details were very impressive. In every scene, there's something happening like each scene has its own twist before going to the next. What I meant was, it was not like those lazy films I'd seen in my life with boring scenes where camera stands still and nothing happens for a very long time. That's the reason I usually dislike art films, but a very few like this makes my day.

Not for casual film viewers
mikyb212 March 2015
Watched this after reading all the praise and adulation from assorted critics. Was expecting to be blown away. Sadly, I was not. While this film intrigued me to certain point, and I was curious about some of the characters, ultimately I was let down. As many have stated, it may as well have a been a documentary. There is no obvious plot to speak of. No obvious goal or obstacle to overcome. No obvious big reveal or "A HA!" moment.

It pretty much felt like only a potion of a film. A film where they left out all the important details that tell a cohesive story. Instead we just got to watch banality and scratch our heads.

There were things I did appreciate about the film. Some interesting shot selections and odd framing choices were cool. The way they captured the pets was well done. The "realness" of some of the characters was refreshing.

But to my sensibility, this came off like an art-house experiment where script & plot writing was not a requirement. But with visuals not nearly compelling enough to carry the story on its own.

meh.

Great Documentary
TheCinemaMan11 February 2015
Perhaps lost in translation but this film is basically a documenting of a day in the life of a family. The closest we get to any impact of the somewhat illustrated stress of that living (and what's unique about that?) is when mom looks like she might, just might, lose it. A plus though is the "feeling European" that comes through in mannerism and relationship. I grabbed it because it was my understanding that Bela Tarr was involved; turns out, he was, but in a relatively minor way (workshop, not class)that this film cannot be considered being done by one of his students. So count me among those who saw the film to the end but in the end, came away unimpressed. Unfortunately, the extras were a big disappointment shedding light only on the "source basis" for the film

Not enough interesting moments Warning: Spoilers
"Das merkwürdige Kätzchen" or "The Strange Little Cat" is a German movie from three years ago written and directed by Swiss filmmaker Ramon Zürcher. Its indie status is confirmed by the fact that there are really no famous actors in the cast. I know very many semi-famous German actors, but I have never heard of any of the cast members here, which is very rarely the case when I watch a German film. And it's also not the case that Zürcher cast only Swiss actors for this one, the main roles at least are played by Germans. But maybe this is what caused many awards bodies to appreciate this work. I personally cannot agree with the awards attention though. I found this a very mediocre work. I know the filmmaker's intention probably goes against my title for this review. There was nothing crucial supposed to happen here for the most part. It was all about depicting life as it happens. But the bad thing is, this is not true either. Maybe it is somewhat true for the most part in terms of what the characters do, but not in terms of how they talk. The dialogues felt really pretentious and not like something anybody would say. It felt extremely scripted at times. One example would be the woman who talks about how she always wears a scarf in a cinema to avoid being stabbed to the neck from behind? That was weird. That also was not artistic, that was just awkward. All in all, i don't think this is anywhere near the best the year 2013 had to offer in terms of (German) film. A disappointing watch and I am glad that it was so short. This film does not even reach the 75-minute mark. And it is a good thing because it was not an interesting or compelling watch by any means. I give it a thumbs-down. Not recommended.

German Family Life?
skepticskeptical6 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This film is really depressing. The family members all seem to resent each other and the grandmother is zonked out on psych meds. The mother seems as though she is about five seconds from going postal and blowing them all away.

There are some beautifully shot images, and I enjoyed the music and the wanderings of the cat, but the strained relations between the mother and everyone else in the film are difficult to watch. She is obviously miserable but feels trapped in her current situation. She slaps her young daughter for a small act of disobedience, but really the mother is lashing out at her life. This is why divorces happen. Or else the couple stays together and the children end up suffering as a result, as in this case.

The older children like to make banal observations and relay anecdotes devoid of any interest. The only joy to be found is introduced by the dinner guests who do not seem to be clinically depressed as does nearly everyone else in the film. All in all, this work is a major snoozefest.

Watch this film if you want to talk yourself out of getting married and having a family. Or maybe to practice your German?

Ordinary life of ordinary family
mond_und_sterne23 November 2014
Just an ordinary life of an ordinary family - The following is my personal opinion about the film - it might seem extreme in a way to you. For me this is only a film about an usual family that lives its everyday life in a big city, nothing more, nothing special, no exciting dialogs, no outstanding characters, no effects. Why should I go to cinema or watch TV when I can see it all day long at home? I have to admit I did not watch the film to the end - but there was no sign that it might become better till the end. For me a film must show an intention - even if that is only amusement. But here I cannot see what the director or writer wants to tell us.

Not Great, Not Even Close
TheCinemaMan15 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
An old hag takes out her personal demons on the hapless residents of a small town. There is so much wrong with this film it boggles the mind. The most notable errors are red herrings and smoking guns. Red herring majorly: the "rapist" scenes. What the? Who the? Smoking Gun majorly: the packet on the road after the explosion. Where the? Other major problems: crazy swearing in front of kids. What the? Sheriff never talked to her? What the? To make the point: cut out all footage of Willoughby. What is lost? Letters? One that even begets a "conversion"? Not going to continue on; others that think this is one huge overrated film have done the detail work justifying the observation. An old hag takes out her personal demons on the hapless residents of a small town and is lucky they don't kill her.
