Every time you see that she is in a movie these days, you know this is going to be one huge piece of stinky crap. And this also applies to this film here. "Frühlingskinder" is the third of so far 6 entries to the "Frühling" series starring Germany's worst actress as Katja Baumann. She plays a woman who takes care of children when their parents are not capable to do so. The problem is just that Thomallas has been cast for such a long time in lead roles and that she does not even have the acting talent to be in supporting roles. She has zero range in terms of drama, has no talent for comedic characters and possesses the physical acting capabilities of a sleeping turtle. Apart from that her pouty face is always the same. Zero face expressions ever. And of course, she also plays the very same characters in every film she is in. She is always smart, kind-hearted, but yet a successful independent woman. Oh and of course she is so attractive (the most laughable given her actual looks) and all the hot men (usually 15 years younger) want her. Ridiculous stuff.
The bad thing is that she drags everybody else down with her. Oliver Stokowski, in this particular scenario, is not a bad actor at all, but he just gets so little back from Thomalla's character that it's impossible for him to carry this film. But that is also due to the script. It's truly sad to see Natalie Scharf, who directed "Dschungelkind", a truly good movie, stoop that low. Basically every scene here in this 90-minute television movie from 2 years ago, is a complete stinker. And that is mostly due to the dialogs, which are horribly cringeworthy from start to finish. The film's director Michael Karen has done lots of crap in his career, so I am not too surprised there, but with Scharf it is quite a disappointment. The absolute low-point is probably when Stokowski's character (a priest) and Thomalla are in a confessional box and he is the one who commits his "sins" to her which somehow puts her in a position of God and the whole thought of Thomalla being put in a God-like position here is something where I cannot eat as much as I want to vomit. Also that in the end, totally expected of course, the priest takes responsibility for his kids after Thomalla screamed at him is extremely embarrassing. It is one of these feel-good endings which have no real credibility to them and basically don't give a fock about everything else which happened in this movie and the years before it. It also shows again that Thomalla has more influence on the priest than God. Disgusting.
Another really bad thing about this film is how seriously it takes itself. It looks like they really believed they were making a relevant drama here ridiculous. These 1.5 hours are actually an insult to people in the same situation like the ones in this movie (children with a deceased parent). Oh yeah and more examples of bad writing. They randomly included scenes with young animals with no reference at all to the story. It would be pretty hilarious if it wasn't downright bad. And right at the end when you think things could not get any worse, they put in another example of how Thomalla has no comedic talent at all when she chases a turkey around. And her younger, of course, buddy comes by (what a coincidence) at the same time and they chase the turkey together. Oh they would make for such a sweet and funny couple right? Is that what you rubbish filmmakers want us to think? Well.. let me tell you what I thought: Cruelty to animals is something they haven't done before. So they finally covered that area too. Good job everybody. NOT! These guys should never make films anymore and this movie is a perfect example of what is wrong with German television (audiences).
