With the airfields of the Marianas Islands, Guam and Okinawa in Allied hands and a fleet of 40 aircraft carriers, fourteen battleships and many other ships carrying heavy guns the Allies began an unopposed bombardment of Japanese coastal assets in preparation for an invasion.
