The Spirit
BandSAboutMovies29 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Carla (Millie Valdes) and Dean (Ernesto Reyes) have left behind the hustle and bustle for the quiet of the woods. Except that they're living next to a cult whose leader is able to telepathically communicate with The Spirit, which is a lot like Bigfoot.

Directed and written by Jon Garcia and co-written by Zach Carter, the movie has Carla and Dean coming to terms with a miscarriage, which may be why they're missing so many of the signs that perhaps their new home is not safe. Or maybe all that depression might make them perfect candidates to join Arlo's (Jesse Tayeh) growing collection of worshippers.

I've always said that I would have never survived the seventies, because I would have totally either led or been in something like the Process. Even I see the dangers of picking Bigfoot as the person to worship. Did you see Night of the Demon? Bigfoot will straight up tear your dick off.

The Oregon woods in this look amazing and I'd just like to be The Spirit, wondering them and hoping that all the humans would leave.

Complex Film ?
rotini-525865 December 2023
A bunch of complex crap. Pretty stupid film...really. If you like a bunch of hippies jumping up and down during most of the movie, well than..this is for you..Bigfoot transcending into our brains. Just an almost comical movie. A bunch of drunken .drugged up stupid people screwing each other's wives and old people chanting ridiculous Jibberish. Reminds me of the Manson cult followers. Just a totally idiotic attempt at something that never actually comes to fruation. Save yourself 90 minutes of stupidity and go take a hit of acid. Just a mindless film that thinks it's actually complex...which it is not. Just stupid !

Awful

Warning: Spoilers
This is almost unwatchable. Tubi should remove it and it should be erased from the collective memory of humanity. Poorly directed, written, acted, I'd like to know how many drugs were consumed in the creation of this trash. Here's what I know. When a bunch of hippie weirdos summon bigfoot, who proceeds to slaughter the enitre group; crushing heads, pulling off arms, basically going berserk (in a pretty bad bigfoot suit) and yet, nothing happens until the end of the stupid film, this is a bad thing. This is truly a craptastic, snoozefest. I can't even understand how I sat through this garbage. Last Chance Lance from Rue Morgue was right-Avoid this! Avoid it!

Fine enough for what it is but still missing in certain area
kannibalcorpsegrinder8 August 2023
Moving to a new house in the countryside, a couple's attempt at moving past a personal tragedy moves them into an area populated by a group of hippie-like free spirits who practice a form of nature worship that intrigues them into joining them only for a guardian creature to disturb it all.

Overall, there's a lot to like about this one. One of the finer aspects of the film is the rather strong and generally impressive mixture of storylines here that provides a highly intriguing setup. The main idea of the film revolving around the bizarre commune-like cult that interacts with nature in the way they do makes for a great starting point here, with their friendly nature and persona clashing with the couple's tragedy that brings them into contact after moving in. This setup paints them as the sinister force they are with the easy-going nature hiding the malevolent secret about the forest they have despite the outgoing appearance, and with the sinister secret they hide being quite monstrous it all helps to add a much darker undertone than expected to the interactions early on about getting to know the couple once they arrive. This provides the necessary setup for the finale here where everything comes together enough to get an idea of what the purpose for it all really is. The idea of the cult's seduction techniques being revealed and given out to be the next member of their tribe is a pretty disturbing part of this when the full extent of it all gets spelled out, and the means of doing this with various means of helping that along with their actions and secretive behavior coming to the forefront providing this with the necessary launching point into the creatures' appearance at the end. However brief it is, the onslaught of violence here with the victims getting ripped to pieces and torn apart, the mini-brawls that take place trying to keep everything in line, and a haunting final resolution that plays perfectly with how everything's been described all manage to play out here to give this some likable enough elements. There are a few minor drawbacks that hold this one back. Among the more detrimental issues here is the obvious lack of tension that goes on here due to the focus on the commune's free-spirited nature-worship approach to living. As the majority of this one is about their making peace and harmony with the universe, conducting rituals to symbolize their one-ness with nature, and trying to seduce them into their way of living, there's no prominent threat for a healthy part of the running time. This keeps the creature off-screen and not interacting with anyone beyond standing in the treeline observing what's going on as the main focus does come from the lives of the cult doing their best to preach their views on them so the brief bits of creature action isn't always a priority here. This can be a real turn-off for some expecting a creature feature instead of this cult-like effort which does hold it down.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Language, Graphic Violence, and Brief Nudity.

I'm impressed
mangosteen553 July 2023
Summoning the Spirit has everything you would expect in a horror film. I thought the bigfoot concept was interesting and unique in it's own way. The plot didn't drag out and this had my attention right to the very end of the flick. The actors were on point and seemed to have passion and were all really into their characters which was important. The plot can be silly at times but it's unique and that's what made it interesting to watch. I'm usually guessing what happens next in these types of films but this one toke me by surprise. I'm giving this a 8. The ending isn't what you would expect and most horror films get me bored midway but this doesn't.

A Unexpectedly Complex Film
nicolasmleininger11 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Summoning the Spirit explores the complexity of marriage dynamics as newlyweds Carla and Dean mourn the loss of their stillborn daughter forcing their relationship into unexpected territory. Together they tiptoe along the edges of their fragile marriage avoiding the nature of what they've built together and what they've sacrificed along the way both personally and professionally. Summoning the Spirit has big shoes to fill. The horror film industry is a highly competitive genre, but this Sasquatch thriller isn't afraid to set foot in the arena.

Writers Zach Carter and John Garcia find a way to make Bigfoot fit.his sinister Sasquatch serves as a supernatural representation of the unknown with the only certainty being death itself. Towards the end of the film, the audience will discover a few twists and turns related to the existence of the unborn. The film is most lacking in its characters who have no depth and have little to no backstory. We don't get to learn much about the main characters Carla and Dean nor do we learn very much about the backstory or motivations of their Sasquatch cult neighbors.

The film has a series of beautiful panoramic shots showcasing the beauty of the Pacific Northwest; it also uses drone photography to capture the towering trees and mountainous terrain where this lonely cryptid tends to roam. Summoning the Spirit has an excellent original film score. The music adds a heightened level of intimacy to the film which complements its cinematography. Summoning the Spirit is an ambitious independent horror film that tackles subject matter rarely discussed in the horror space or any genre for that matter.

Rarely do we see films that talk about stillbirths and the loss a couple endures after attempting to become parents for so long. This film has questions that the audience can attempt to answer one big footed Sasquatch step at a time. How does loss shape these characters for better or for worse? Was their marriage structurally sound before they attempted to become parents? Would they be liberated if they went their separate ways? Would Carla be happier if she lived with the polyamorous Sasquatch cult community?

The plot twist towards the end of the film wasn't entirely clear so it's definitely worth watching the movie a second time so that the true meaning of the story can be fully grasped. Overall Summoning the Spirit is a refreshing take on an existing genre with impressive visual and musical elements uncommon for low budget independent films.

Seriously well done
d-ramseeey2 July 2023
This was our weekend movie and we were impressed. Plenty of plot twists and lots of surprisingly good dialogue with a solid backstory related to a miscarriage and communicating with the spirits. Without giving anything else away the production looked top notch, the editing and the sound was on point as was the ending. We were all on the edge of our seats to the end as the plot kept taking turns. I thought the female lead who plays Carla has so much talent, she really made this film come alive. This is for sure one of the better thriller, horror films out of late. I highly recommend this if horror type of films is your genre. Well worth it.
