Quite enjoyable...

Right, well I have to admit that I sort of thought this would be a waste of time. I mean, a halfway to Halloween special? Sounded dubious. And I never even heard about it prior to sitting down and watching it. And I had no idea who the Boulet brothers were. So I didn't have a clue as to what I was in for here.

But I had the opportunity to watch it, and with it being a Halloween-themed TV special and seeing a handful of famous people on the cast list, I figured I would give it a go without knowing what I was in for.

And color me impressed. I was actually genuinely surprised and entertained by "The Boulet Brothers' Halfway to Halloween TV Special". Aside from the long, long title, then this was actually rather enjoyable. The TV special had a good mixture of horror, comedy sketches, music and some great guest apperances.

The guest star list was really impressive, with the likes of Barbara Crampton, Derek Mears, Felissa Rose, Dana DeLorenzo, Jorge Garcia, David Dastmalchian, Matthew Lillard, Kevin Smith and others. So you have some horror icons on the cast list, as well as some other Hollywood-profilic names and faces.

Visually then "The Boulet Brothers' Halfway to Halloween TV Special" was really a nice surprise. They had put a lot of work into the costumes, make-up and effects. It looked great and definitely added to the Halloween horror theme. For a TV special, such as it was, then I was really impressed with the effects throughout the 48 minutes that the TV special ran for.

I also enjoyed the music in the TV special. I wasn't familiar with the band Twin Temple at all, but after having seen and heard them in "The Boulet Brothers' Halfway to Halloween TV Special", I am definitely going to be checking out more of their music.

This is something I can warmly recommend, especially if you enjoy Halloween and enjoy something that is campy, while still being within the horror genre. And the production level throughout the entire show was just fantastic, also adding a lot to the show.

My rating of "The Boulet Brothers' Halfway to Halloween TV Special" lands on a six out of ten stars.

Really bad

I was quite excited when I saw all the famous names in the opening credits. Then the show started.

It's pretty terrible. I have never heard of the Boulet Brothers but I'm always up for a Halloween special, even if it is in May. The idea is great, but Shudder really needs to stick with Joe Bob and Elvira when doing things like this. The Boulet Brothers were not funny, not scary and not interesting. And I was sad to see Matthew Lillard and Kevin Smith stooping to this level.

The skits were cringeworthy, and not in a scary good way. I was embarrassed for the actors. I could barely watch the camp segment. The acting and the writing was just horrible.

If this is the future of Shudder I will be canceling my subscription.

Horrible, but Not In a Good Way

I was interested in checking out this show and now I wish I could get my time back.

It's simply the worst low brow, unfunny, garbage I've ever seen.

Apparently the Boulet brothers -- who are getting very long in the tooth -- need a hundred thousand other performers to prop them up, only it didnt help.

The writing is ridiculous. It's simply not amusing and maybe they thought that adding a bad laugh track to the dialog would make it funnier. It doesn't.

If you have to tell people when to laugh, you're already going in the wrong direction.

Why Shudder put up the money for this stink fest is beyond me. Must have been short on the ticked boxes.

And BTW, an unrecognizabe Kevin Smith is in this for some reason. Why he lowered himself is one to wonder.

Absolute Perfection

What a perfect love letter to all things creepy! The cast is excellent, the sketches are just the right balance of gore, glam, & gags, the music is incredible, and the production value it top notch. Even if you're unfamiliar with The Boulet Brothers' impressive body of work (which I highly suggest checking out if that's the case!), this is still one hundred percent a wonderful production that you can sink your teeth right into & enjoy! If you're a fan of Halloween, horror, humor, camp, kitsch, & darkly delicious weirdness, please do yourself a favor & check out this freakishly fun homage to our favorite day.

Why?

This was so bad. It was long and drawn out- just like I'm going to have to make this review - so that I can type enough characters so they will post it.

-I will say this - the only good thing that I enjoyed about this long boring- non-entertaining waste of forty-eight (48) minutes- was that we got to see KATYA - perform a version of her song, "RAVIOLI". I didn't really care for the version that she performed on this show- there are better versions that I love and downloaded on ITunes. -- but at least there was something good during this waste of time.

Nothing was good. Nothing was funny. It was just a long boring waste.

Great and Campy
GrumpyHistory21 August 2023
If you are looking for the campy side of horror, and fun skits paying image to classic tropes, then this is the special for you. Give me a Galway to Halloween special any day of the week. Sure, there are corny bits. That's part of the fun of it. Someone said they hated the camp scene, but from how they described it, the over-the-top went right over their head. I thought the whole thing was cute. It's a departure from the drag competition and drag horror events the Boulet Brothers usually produce, but this is a celebration of the quirk and camp and all that makes classic horror amazing. If you don't think there's humor in horror, you probably aren't a big horror. Fan anyway.
