Rapturous Choices
3xHCCH25 September 2014
It was the wedding day of Dan and Skylar. Their best friends were all there: the best man Jack, the maid of honor Allison, and the photographer Tommy. Everything was going on perfectly until suddenly, a lot of people suddenly dropped to the floor dead. This was followed by a series of disasters of such magnitude the world had yet not known until that time, killing even more people.

All five friends survive and seek shelter with other survivors in a church. There they begin to realize what this major worldwide catastrophe was actually the Rapture previously described in Biblical prophecy. As they eventually realize the true meaning of these events, important spiritual decisions will have to be made in order to determine which life they will choose to live.

While this was still very much a B-movie, writer/director Casey La Scala did well in telling the story at a fast clip. The atmosphere of suspense and tension were effectively developed. The special visual effects were pretty good considering this was film with no name actors to speak of. La Scala did well not to blatantly show those supernatural beings which snatched people off to the sky. I must admit though that the shaky camera work did make me dizzy a bit, so I could not keep my eyes on the screen all the time.

Though it was not obvious from the title nor the trailer, this film is actually a vehicle for Christian preaching. The message was not subtle. It is out there for the audience to listen to and reflect on. I do not think I have seen such a horror film with an overtly religious intent. As a Catholic, I did not mind it. However, if you are one of those who do not like religion mixed with their film entertainment, this will not be for you.

Holy molly!
diescobarmdq31 December 2021
Wow! I was surprised by how quickly I got hooked on it.

The chaos and all natural disaster stuff was really well done, the effects were pretty good.

For a movie I had no idea what it was about, it turned out to be quite entertaining. Except the ending, which sucked big time!

I didn't care for all the religious bs, but it got pretty annoying by as the movie went on. It would've been good to show the strange creatures (fallen angels?). But it was pretty scary and tense not seeing them at all.

To sum up: it's just another average end-of-the-world, survival and suspense-horror flick.

Don't take it too serious and you might enjoy it.

a group of nice people do not get saved by God..

Warning: Spoilers
When i watched this movie I was not aware of the Christian themes, apparently affirm films is some kind of Christian movie company. I was reasonably entertained though, despite the preaching. I was hoping that the end would reveal that it wasn't the rapture and in fact aliens where masking there invasion as the rapture to avoid any resistance! would have been an awesome twist!the movie seemed very well made for a b-movie, and there where some pretty good special effects, although this was not an action movie. as a note, watch this movie and ask yourself, how can 47 % of American Christians believe that Jesus will come back to earth, soon and do this to all the non-Christians, good or bad? seems a bit harsh and unfair!? Jesus! :D

Don't Waste Your Time!
yauchiejo14 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
The whole end of the world biblical rapture story fascinates me. Naturally I wanted to give this a chance. Lord was I wrong! This was just bad.

The movies begins with this couple getting married and their close friends are all in attendance. Minutes later people are seen dropping to the floor, the building begins to shake and all of this destruction rains down upon them. Now usually in a rapture situation the person disappears leaving just their clothes behind, but this one is different. The bodies just fall and their eyes glaze over so you assume okay their spirit is what left.

Anyway so the ones who are left behind see this and it's like they really don't care! They just immediately run outside and buildings are collapsing and hail is falling from the sky. One guy casually says "Oh are we under attack from aliens!" And then they look for a bible and one of the girls with fake tears reads a passage from Revelation and they are all just so causal about it.

The story and the bad acting just ruined it. The characters didn't know how to react to a situation like "THE END OF THE WORLD!" Here you are under attack from these flying demons and people hiding in this church are just kinda hanging out and chatting like it's a bright sunny afternoon. The pastor is sitting at the front of the church with a crazed look on his face. He looks more like a bum. And then they gotta throw in a woman having baby in the back. Acting was over the top and just every situation looked thrown in for nothing. No real sequence of events. Made no sense to me.

The special effects were about the only impressive thing about this film. It was old style movie making with real props and sound effects. It was effective and good for a low budget film.

But do no not waste your time with this crap unless you are just easily entertained. If you want to see a good horror end times movie then I recommend Tribulation with Gary Busey, Howie Mandel and Margot Kidder. Strong acting, good story and I think secular audiences can enjoy it very much despite it being a film geared from Christian audiences.

I can't believe this thing was made. I say thing because this is not a movie. It's some sort of religious delusion wrapped into an horror theme. Don't waste any minute on this. It doesn't make sense and the ending sucks. I don't know where they were going with this but they failed miserably. Watch Constantine instead, it's 1000X better.

Religious clap trap disguised as a "horror" movie
serahserah6 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
There is very little to this film. It's flimsy. It literally feels like the church funded a movie to try to scare people into believing their nonsense. There is no horror in this film at all. The acting is horrible. We're meant to be shocked when all the children die because they are innocents. YAWN!

This movie is beyond bad. Poor acting, bad screenplay and scripts, no effects, no props... there is NOTHING good in this movie except for the intro of the Rapture. And the ending was just absurd. It's like they changed the director after the fist 20 minutes and killed the movie. It's been a while since I've last watched something that bad.

Terrible ... just terrible
gabrielgrimmnw2 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is poorly executed, ludicrous propaganda. My previous lengthy review was lost somehow so I will simply say this ...

Bad acting, bad writing, bad scoring, and a premise so flawed that it makes being murdered by demons both the thing they are trying to avoid and the way to get to heaven?

I also appreciate them explicitly stating that being spiritual is not good enough, that being a generally good person is not good enough, even that getting married somewhere other than a church is worthy of damnation. None of these characters are bad people (bad actors, but not bad people). The message of the movie seems to be that having belief is more important than being a good person.

Don't watch this movie, you will regret it.

As Advertised
dwright32719 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Unlike the people that were complaining that they didn't know this was a Christian movie, I read the description and watched the trailer. It clearly mentions judgment day and the preacher calls it the Rapture. I had no doubt what this movie was about. I also enjoyed that it was a Christian themed movie. Not a 100% biblical it still gave a sense of the rapture. For Christians that like the horror genre this was a good little movie about the choices we make even if it causes us suffering, we have to choose.

The acting was okay for this type of movie. The special effects were pretty good too.

Treat it as what it is: a work of Fiction
anfo133 February 2015
An 'iPhone is a central character', 'found footage', 'shaky cam' attempt at the rapture. I personally derive nothing from the subject matter being a devout Athiest, so I treated it for what is was: a work of science fiction. I suggest however you attempt to view through the (luckily) few 'christian product placement' moments and you might actually enjoy it without too much cringing. Unfortunately this movie is peppered with the clichés of its genre and offers nothing new. 'Noah', 'Left Behind' and others; cinema is the new church and you are the unwitting participant in Bible study Hollywood style. Rant aside, The Remaining might appeal whether you're a believer with an express ticket to bliss, or overlooked with the rest of us poor saps.

A lot better then I expected
tomboyshiek5 September 2014
First off I have to start by saying yes this film is talking about the bible so of course it's going to come off a little bit on the preachy side.At the same time this has got to be one of the best Christian type film I've seen. The acting was top notch. Me and friends were in a almost empty theater watching this I myself am a horror fan so anything that looks remotely scary I'll see. So when the trailer came out I thought OMG this is going to be terrible. But I went anyways and I was really surprised I jumped so many times and we were all really really on edge waiting for the next thing to happen. So yes it is about the end of the world in biblical sense and it looks scary as hell. See it for yourself and don't let the message throw you off they actually do it right.

Surprisingly good
Psy-Ko31 January 2015
Unlike others I did know this was a Christian film company before I watched it. Saw and joined the FB page awhile back and have been looking forward to seeing it for awhile. Let me state I am not a practicing Christian. I have some background though and know the book of Revelations. In fact I used to say it would make a great horror movie.

I was impressed by the movie as a whole. There was a bit of preachiness to it but I mean it's a movie based on a book of the bible, how could it not be preachy?? I didn't expect to recognize any of the actors, figure they would draw from some secret database of Christian actors so I was surprise to see Alexa Vega (Repo/Devils Carnival) and the kid who played Aaron on Vampire Diaries. They both did well as did the other actors. Much better then I expected. As for the writing there were a few times something felt off but how can I fault the writer, I mean it was god right? I guess they had to condense for the length of a movie because if I remember right all this happens in 7 years of trials & tribulations in the bible. Also thought a nice touch would have been the survivors having to accept a mark in order to get food and supplies. Overall though it held together and kept me entertained. Judging it as a "Christian Horror" I'd give it a 9/10 because it's much better done and less preachy then anything else claiming that title. Judging just as a Horror or Disaster movie I'd give it a 6/10 so I'm going to average it out and say 7.5

A Promising Start But Overall Pretty Boring
dfa12037416 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
After watching the trailers for his film a while back, I couldn't understand at first why it's classed as Faith & Spirituality instead of Horror, and it's that that was delaying me from watching it as I wasn't interested in a preachy Christian based film. After taking a chance and watching it, I can understand the Faith & Spirituality entry.

I'm an atheist but I don't mind films with religious context e.g. The Exorcist, The Omen, etc because those aren't preaching i.e. they're not subconsciously saying you MUST believe in God, or else. I saw them as being good story's inspired by a fictional book. With The Remaining, though, the underlying message did come across as a bit preachy in the telling of the Rapture i.e. believers are "saved" yet non-believers are left on Earth to live out their sinful life.

Which brings me to another reason on why I didn't enjoy this film and that is I found it to be contradictory. For instance, non-believer's aren't "taken" yet as soon as they suddenly claim faith they're accepted by God and are "taken". I can't see how a non-believer can suddenly change their beliefs in an instant like that and are suddenly treated as if they have been faithful all their lives. It just doesn't make sense no matter what spin religious people put on it.

Even taking the religious context out of it, it's still just not a very good film. The beginning was pretty promising, but it just ended up being a pretty stop/start movie because there are parts where you think it will pick up for it to only just shudder to a stop again. As for the film's anti-climactic ending, well, that just capped it off for me.

One thing I will say is that the special & visual effects are very decent, and I did enjoy the demonic figures. It's just a pity we didn't see more of them, or that there wasn't more suspense throughout the film.

The Remaining isn't a hideous movie, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you're maybe one of the "believers".

Total Christian Rubbish
panther_husky2 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
It is not that I didn't like the movie due to its Christian theme, it is because there were so many flaws in the movie which made me laugh. Yes, Christianity seemed to be thrown into your face in the movie which I didn't care for but people need to understand that there are other faiths out there and not just Christians.

I have to admit, It did annoy me when the actors had to choose which faith they "must" turn to and if you didn't choose the right path, then you will be dammed! If you did choose the right path then your dead anyway! Go figure.

Acting wasn't too bad some scenes did make you flinch a little but that is all.

If you are a believer then this film may be for you but these kind of movies, well, nice to throw into a fire on a cold winters night.

This movie was so poorly made that I cannot even finish watching it. These directors should be banned from making movies. It is not only a waste of their time but also, more importantly, our time.

Very upset and Disappointed
msdaniellasage2 February 2015
My boyfriend and I rented this movie after seeing a preview for it. And I have to say I was mislead as to what the movie was about. As a horror genre fan, I went into this movie expecting a horror movie.

I respect what others may chose to believe, but please....keep it away from the horror genre. If this is what we can expect, at least issue a statement or warning(for lack of a better term) to us who don't want faith thrown in our faces.

Aside from that, acting and special effects were decent. Just very disappointed and would have preferred to rate this movie with a negative instead of the 1.

The Remaining Is An Insult to Spirituality of All KInds
jburtonprod-802-7590293 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I wish I could have given this steaming piece of sh!t a negative 1000 scratch that, INFINITY to counter all the idiots that gave it enough to get 4.3 stars. The twisted agenda of this horrid piece of fire and brimstone ranting turns the Almighty into a relentless super serial killer whose only purpose is to TORTURE THE WICKED. This is exactly the kind of 'I can kiss God's Ass into Heaven' b.s. the religious right is always try to shove down everyone's throat. And it's intent is to SCARE you into doing so. I'm sorry but I believe that trying to live according to the tenants of Jesus is far more important than fawning servitude and true spirituality can't be beaten into you by instilling terror. In a sense this movie did convince me that there is a God because it is most certainly the work of the Devil.

A Metascore of 38 on Metacritic is honestly way too kind for this thing.
hugosoup3 April 2019
This was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I only give it above a 1 because it at least was slightly entertaining and had a story/premises that didn't totally offend me like the 2015 remake of Vacation and Death of a Nation. Still a bad movie though. So if you're reading this right now, do yourself a favor and don't watch it. This movie was honestly so dumb and religion deserves better films than this, like The Last Temptation of the Christ, Life of Brian, The Passion of the Christ, or even Son of God (2014). Just please watch anything but this. This thing was just terrible.

Half decent movie
harry-kyles25 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I went into this film knowing that it was a religious production but hey, I'm a sucker for end of the world movies so I thought I'd give it a go even though I'm not religious at all.

Turned out to be not as preachy as I thought it would be, probably about the same amount of preaching as what Stephen Kings The Stand mini series from the 90's had in it.

The subject material makes for a good horror movie. The end of the world as we know it, earthquakes, fire & ice falling from the sky, strange dark creatures waiting to pounce from the darkness, it's decent horror fodder, it really is.

For me where this movie failed the most was in it's characters, they're just so boring, every last one of them. Everyone was so nice and well mannered during the apocalypse that it just made them feel like fake cardboard cutouts and not real people and I ended up not caring about them at all because they had no real personalities to speak of, they were as bland as bland could possibly be.

Production values are pretty high on this movie. The camera work is good (this is NOT a found footage movie) and the effects are pretty decent, you can definitely tell that a few dollars went into making this film.

If you like B-grade horror/action movies like Aftershock, Chernobyl Diaries, Darkest Hour etc then you probably won't mind spending a couple of hours with The Remaining.

christian propaganda
appelbesarah-6779311 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So I really like horrors and apocalyptic movies but this movie is 1hr and 20 mins of terrifying you into being a christian. Like... its basically have faith in god and then you commit suicide and go to heaven (uhhhhhh) or you don't have faith and you like in a miserable world. Also throughout this film all i could think of is "are all the muslims and hindus going to be hunted due to a difference in beliefs?" smells like religious persicution if you ask me. Definitely too many white people, no diversity. There was one black nurse who dies mid movie (shocker). However i did find the acting quite good like there was a lady who gave birth and her acting was definatly applaudable. I cannot fault any of these actors i enjoyed all of their performances. Another note is that the groom confessed that he cheated on his wife and this was not talked about enough. Like for a second i was living for this drama but then they had to get back to their religious propaganda but i thoroughly enjoyed this drama would have loved to have seen like idk a fight or something between the couple. Anyways after this film i felt if a god would do this to the people just because they dont believe in him he is for sure a god i dont want to believe in.

Brings Christian horror one step closer to being as good as any mainstream genre film coming out
ersinkdotcom9 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
There was a time when the idea of a Christian-themed horror film would be laughed at by genre fans everywhere. Many still do giggle as they read a synopsis or watch trailers for faith-based movies and assume the worst when it comes to anything Bible oriented. Directors like Scott Derrickson are doing their best to change that pre-conceived notion by successfully giving audiences scares that do more than just award you a momentary jolt. They leave you with something to think about after the credits role.

Directorial newcomer Casey La Scala aims to do the same with his passion- project "The Remaining." Many will recognize his name as the producer of notable films like "Donnie Darko," "A Walk to Remember," and others. He is also involved in the latest chapter of the infamous "Amityville Horror" franchise entitled "Amityville: The Awakening."

Equal parts disaster film and end-of-the-world supernatural thriller, "The Remaining" focuses on a group of friends making their way through the aftermath of the Biblical Rapture. For those who somehow haven't been exposed to the "Left Behind" movies either by seeing or hearing about them, the Rapture is a worldwide event talked about in the Book of Revelation where Christians are suddenly taken up to Heaven when Jesus Christ returns and seven years of horrific Tribulation begin.

Basically, God turns his back on the World and gives it over to the Antichrist and his minions to do with as they will. There are plagues, natural disasters, and other catastrophic events which unfold as the clock to Armageddon counts down. Many people will realize what's going on around them who were taught the Truth but never truly believed what they were heard. They will form factions who will help lead others to make a decision to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ or turn their backs on him.

In "The Remaining," the events of Revelation are accelerated to keep the action moving forward at a break-neck speed. By no means am I a scholar or student of the final book of the Bible, but just remembering as I was instructed, the things that take place in a couple of days in the movie transpire over a period of years in scripture. As a piece of Christian fiction designed to make an impact on viewers within an hour and a half, I think "The Remaining" accomplishes its task quite well.

It's safe to say this isn't your parents' (or grandparents') Rapture movie of the 1970s, 1980s, or 1990s. People don't just disappear off the face of the Earth leaving their clothes and accessories lying in piles where they were once standing. Their souls depart from the body, which is left slumped over steering wheels, dinner tables, or collapsed in the middle of sidewalks and streets. They look as if they've suddenly just died. The eyes of the taken are glazed over with an eerie white film.

Backed up by Sony Pictures, "The Remaining" actually had a budget to work with. The visual effects all look great and keep the audience from being distracted by inferior CGI. The images of jumbo jets crashing into buildings and monstrous chunks of hail hitting the ground as people scramble for safety are believable and frighteningly effective.

Aside from a couple of genre favorites, the cast of "The Remaining" is made up of faces actors won't immediately recognize. This helps to keep audiences detached from familiar faces that would take them out of the viewing experience. The two actors many sci-fi and horror fans might identify are those of Alexa Vega and John Pyper-Ferguson. Vega played Carmen in the "Spy Kids" films and also appeared in "Machete Kills," "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For," and "Repo! The Genetic Opera." Pyper-Ferguson is seen in cult classic shows like "Alphas," "Caprica," and "Battlestar Galactica."

Although at times it felt like the plot and message of "The Remaining" began to slow things down a little too much, I give props to Writer / Director Casey La Scala for trying to inject as much character and story development into the movie as he could. Some might feel that it's a bit too "preachy" for their tastes. I think the engaging journey from one place to another, frightening sequences of impending peril, and the tense race against time more than outweigh any lags in action due to narrative or pushing of doctrine.

"The Remaining" is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of terror, violence and destruction throughout, and thematic elements. There are definitely some scenes which rival those in films like "The Conjuring" or "The Last Exorcism." The demons reminded me of the Dementors in the "Harry Potter" movies. Aside from some minor bloodshed, the violence is comparable to what we see in "Transformers," "G.I. Joe," "Star Trek," and countless other teen-oriented horror films.

While it's not perfect, "The Remaining" brings Christian horror one step closer to being as good as any mainstream genre film coming out in theaters these days. It successfully marries elements of creature features and supernatural thrillers to create a unique take on what is a common subject in faith-based entertainment. Those who don't frequent scary fare need to be warned. This is a much darker take on the Rapture than what we've seen in the "Left Behind" or "Revelation Road" movies.

A decent movie- *****Contains spoilers*****
mtjohnson-6100115 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This movie didn't contain any major actors, nor was there a lot of money spent on the budget and yet I thought it was still a decent movie, totally worth the watch.

Spoilers ahead- the movie is about a wedding ceremony that is taking place as the end of the world as foretold in the book of Revelations in the Bible unfolds. As the ceremony is taking place you can see the bride and groom's friend filming the happy event, the laughter, the dancing, not realizing in the next moment they will never see many of their friends and family again. Those who are believers are taken away, nothing but their lifeless shells remain while those who "remain" are subject to all the torments foretold in the book of Revelations.

This is not your typical horror movie and whether to consider it a "horror" at all is really an individual perception. I will say this movie did have not neat side effects, was well acted for the basis of the material. Not a new concept as of course it is a biblically inspired film but it also put me in the mind of the series "Left Behind." If you like those type of movies this will be enjoyable as well.

Absolute garbage! Do NOT waste your money on this garbage!!!
Shaykespeeer15 February 2015
Do NOT waste your time on this religious brainwashing propaganda disguised as a crappy sci-fi horror movie. Absolute garbage!!!!

Who is funding this propaganda? It seems more and more crappy religious films are being released to try and brainwash people.

Basic premise of the movie..... if you haven't bowed down to the Christian "God" and given yourself completely to Christian religion..... you will be killed/tortured when the Christian Rapture (end of the world) arrives.

Feel bad for some of the actors and actresses..... this crap isn't going to do much for your careers.

Do NOT waste your hard earned money on this garbage!

Religious Brain Wash
claudio_carvalho11 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
During the wedding of Skylar (Alexa PenaVega) and Dan (Bryan Dechart) there is an apocalyptic event that kills most of the guests. The survivors are the newlywed couple and their friends Tommy (Johnny Pacar), Jack (Shaun Sipos) and Allison (Italia Ricci). Skylar is mysteriously wounded and the teenager Sam (Liz E. Morgan) joins the group that seeks shelter in the church of Pastor Shay (John Pyper- Ferguson) that is convinced that they are living The Rapture from the Bible. They discuss faith and the fate of the survivors that are doomed to die.

Religion is a theme that is to be respected. However "The Remaining" is a religious brain wash about Christianity in a view of the Apocalypse. The Brazilian DVD does not provide any information in this regard and I was lured with the DVD cover and bought the DVD expecting to see a horror film. My vote is three.

Title (Brazil): "Remanescentes: Esquecidos por Deus" ("Remaining: Forgotten by God")
