Great start to the season

Not sure why this episode currently only has a 6.7 rating. Even the average Brokenwood episodes deserve more than that.

The musical concept was suitably hilarious, with some truly dreadful songs, that were sung with such gusto and passion! I image the writers had an absolute blast coming up with the musical numbers.

The supporting cast was excellent as always, with a number of characters reappearing, including a previous murderer, and the mystery was a good one.

With lots of humour, beautiful scenery, and delightful interplay/exchanges, every episode of Brokenwood Mysteries is an absolute treasure, and I've lost track as to how many times I've watched each season now.

Good but not great

Sadly, the culprit was too, too obvious

But other than that a good, confident start to the new series, with an 'entertaining' storyline and some truly unforgettable (for all the wrong reasons) songs

Daniel Chalmers is slowly coming out of his shell and showing more personality, which is great

Nice to see Sims showing some humanity again as well (even though I quite like the Ice Queen Robot character 🤣)

Mike might have really screwed up with Beth though - not many women could forgive that!

And I echo the comment above about it taking very bold and talented writers to bring back an unforgivable villain and make him a figure of some pity, not just derision.

Great start to S9

Several mystery series have had amateur dramatic plots, especially since the pandemic, but Brokenwood The Musical is a whole level up! The silly songs made me laugh and the motive was good - the reveal scene is definitely one on its own! There is plenty of quirky Brokenwood humour throughout and a few twists (or should that be Twisters?) plus some on-going non-work plots to follow across these episodes. I enjoy seeing some of the recurring characters, particularly Trudie at the bar - I love that we see 'reformed criminals' from previous shows. Let's hope the remaining five instalments of this run match up to the standard.

Loved it!

I agree with s_oneale. This was a great start to the season. Fun, curious and so great to see Ralph St John back in the township. Only Brokenwood seems to have the confidence to bring back murderers and give them plausible reasons for being in the town. I thought the device of how the killer secreted the weapon was clever and the musical numbers were nuts. But then isn't that the point? I think the writers were paying homage to 'Waiting for Guffman' maybe? Shakespeare, a musical, and a weeping digger driver what more could you want? Love the Borkenwood Mysteries. I hope they keep coming for many more seasons.

Fun, then heart rending

Warning: Spoilers
The musical plot was immense fun and I for one (and I may be the only one) would love to see the full versions of those songs. If anything there were perhaps too many familiar characters, because it quickly became clear that the murderer would the one newbie. That didn't stop me from enjoying Ralph's ham, Frodo's dancing and Missy's feistiness. I was rooting for Vicky and Timothy throughout, so the last 10 minutes were heart-breaking. Even more so as Mike had brought the ensemble together for the big reveal. Kristin wasn't the only one with a tear in her eye after the final song. Usually in Brokenwood we don't feel much sympathy for the perpetrator. That wasn't the case in this episode and I hope that they, like Ralph and Trudy, will be back in a future season.

Now, where can I get a recording of Brokenwood The Musical?
