"What's As Big As Three Barns?!"...
azathothpwiggins16 March 2019
Christopher R. Mihm's THE GIANT SPIDER is another of his purposefully cheeezey, intentionally hokey, terminally low-budget, 1950's sci-fi homage / parody films. As such, it's almost as stellar as his THE MONSTER OF PHANTOM LAKE.

The characters -military, scientist eggheads, reporters, etc.- are funny, the story is suitably silly, and the titular, superimposed tarantula is a hairy horror, especially its close-up "face", which is a nice nod to the awesome arachnid in THE BLACK SCORPION! Toss in the catchy, opening theme song and this is great Saturday night entertainment. Recommended for all of the other Mihm-iacs out there!

P.S.- Also contains some stupendous stock footage during the final conflict!...

Giant critter indie throwback
Leofwine_draca31 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The main problem I have with these indie throwback tributes to the 1950s monster movie genre is that I'd much rather be watching one of the original productions rather than an indie with a struggling budget trying to do justice to the genre. That's the case with THE GIANT SPIDER, a virtual reworking of TARANTULA with some surprisingly decent, lo-fi special effects. The whole thing is shot in black and white and certainly looks the part, but the script is sub par and I found the forced humour to be unfunny; I'd much rather they simply played it straight.

Reverent, funny homage to 50s-era "Giant Bug" movies
bretw6 June 2013
I've been following Christopher R. Mihm's film career for a couple of years now, and The Giant Spider is easily the best, most accomplished film he's made. Mihm has made a career of mounting reverent homages to 50's horror/sci-fi films, and the polish of each of his films (this is his eighth!) grows with each film. The pacing, acting, special effects, directing, and technical achievement of The Giant Spider is pretty darn impressive for an independent film-maker - some stand out elements for me: The "spider" simply puts all other film beasties to shame - compare it directly with 1955's "Tarantula" and you can see how much better this one is filmed and presented. The puppetry is AMAZING! The close-up of the spider's face is really, really first rate. And the theme song has been stuck in my head for days! Love, love, love it. A film that made me laugh out loud several times (not AT it, WITH it), and left me with a great big smile. Perfect film for fans of the genre.

Hum

Spider A+, acting D-. I had high hopes for the Giant Spider, being that I love old black and white horror movies. Sadly this did not live up to those expectations.

Entertaining movie
the_doofy19 May 2018
The movie category for this is Incorrect, it is a 'Comedy, horror, Sci fi'--with Comedy coming first

A viewer has to get past the first 5 minutes or so, Mr. Mihm, (the guy who put this thing together along with his wife), put their son in it, and his short acting stint is pretty non believable and not funny at all, but after his character meets up with the mom, it starts to get funny, and pretty much stays that way for the rest of the movie

I got a lot of chuckles out of this. A lot of times with this kind of movie it has a lot of good looking young people, and it ends up being pretty flat.

This particular movie has adults for the most part, and U can tell they got a kick out of portraying their characters, and got into the spirit of the thing

Thoroughly enjoyable PG comedy horror movie

Oh man - retitle this 'A Giant Waste of Your Time'
romneymeredith18 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Remember all those unfunny people you've met in your lifetime who genuinely thought they were funny even though no one else did and were never even aware of it? Well, they apparently got together and made this movie with just lousy dialogue and characterizations, plus a magnified tarantula superimposed in scenes and an obviously fake spider head for close-ups. I thought the 1977 'The Crater Lake Monster' was one of the worst movies I'd ever seen but this movie effortlessly edged ahead of that one. They simply try to hard to parody the subject and the 50s and it just doesn't work, unless of course their intent was to make as horrible a movie as the ones they're referencing.

Save your brain cells and give this one a huge pass - the 'star' rating that is 6+ is obviously manipulated and is not reflective of the quality of this movie - you surely have the film makers, their friends and their relatives to thank for that slanted score.

I just want to add ...
mcrow-31216631 January 2019
I agree with most of the comments of the other reviewers. I just want to add that there is a lot of satire around the male-female relationships and the male-female stereotypes of the 1950s. The writers and director are obviously poking fun at the idea that all a woman wants is to be admired and married, and every man wants to be a hero.

Nicely done
rcorc28 January 2018
As a fan of 50's and 60's B movies, I found this movie extremely entertaining. The characters and plot were well written for the genre. The giant spider itself was awesome--maybe even 'too good' compared to the giant bug movies from the time period the movie conveyed. If you're a fan of black and white horror/science fiction movies, you will find this movie well worth the time. I'm looking up the others written by Mr. Mihms to give them a viewing as well.

This movie satisfies the 1950s SciFi fan in me in every way
tdlssc24 May 2013
The is the 8th movie made my Christopher R. Mihm, all of which pay loving homage to those wonderful B 'monster' movies of the 1950's. Well, except one which is really a murder mystery. If you love watching Them or Robot Monster, seeing actors like John Agar and Richard Carlson on the screen, being amazed at the world of 50's style special effects (only better I think), you can't help but love Mr. Mihm's movies. The Giant Spider is his best one yet! There is drama, humor, action, love and thrills to satisfy all. It is obvious that everyone involved with the making of this movies truly loves what they are doing. Be prepared to laugh out loud, to cringe in 'fear', and to just enjoy a little over an hour of fun!!!!! This is a must see!

For lovers of 50's B movies!
Mooncalf3 June 2013
The acting is mediocre at best. The special effects are of varied quality. Actually, the spider scenes are for the most part handled rather well. The stock footage is horribly obvious. As for the writing and directing, well, let's just say that Chris Mihm need not worry about being nominated for any Oscar.

It's quite obvious that this is a very low budget independent movie.

But... it's all done with a great deal of love for the fifties "big bug" movies that it pays tribute to. If it was any slicker it just wouldn't be as much fun as it is.

If you like these old films, you'll probably love The Giant Spider. I know I did.

Chris Mihm is great!!
jamestiberiuskirk-3669422 November 2019
He is a fan of all things cheese. The 50s b movies were cheese. With the lack of technology Hollywood took a chance on movies like plan 9 and the day the earth stood still, war of the worlds and other aliens, giant bugs, etc. Christopher Mihm is a name you should always remember if you like 50s bugs, aliens, and space travel. He uses most of the same main cast. Mike Cook, Dan Sjerven, and his family, and a few from the Kaiser family. A few movies are tied together: the monster from phantom lake, terror from beneath the earth and the giant spider. He does one about every year or two, as it's low-budget. They are all black and white. Generally good family fun. Some of the kids may not get the references. Amazon has a lot of his movies. You won't be disappointed if you like cheese from the 50s. They look terrible by today's standard.

Amazing!
mermaidsnwhiskey21 April 2019
Any movie that is comedy / puntastic one liners mixed with cheesy horror is amazing! Add in not one but two incredible songs just for this movie and it is a winner! Much like Inhumanwich!, this movie does not disappoint!

Not quite there
rbushey-1740011 January 2018
I can see the attempt to make this a 50's style film, but it doesn't work. Now I have seen movies of the 1950's including the nature on the rampage ones. This isn't that. There are many jokes throughout poking fun at 50's life, and that joke wears thin really quickly. The movie, simply, is too self aware to be a real throwback. Maybe I'm being too critical of the film but...it's a good attempt but just doesn't work. Stop trying too hard.

Thanks for the Movie!
ginagaleh30 August 2020
This movie made my day. TWO songs that were actually fun and the movie itself was hilarious. I grew up with those old sci-fi movies and this one was just like them - no blood and guts (but the special effects were perfect). The monster, the mean old general, the scientists and the loving couple (one of whom is the hero), all are done very nicely done. This is the first movie that made me want to create an account and say "Well done!".
