More than ever, rock stars were TV stars in 2023 — in the form of subjects for television documentaries — and so were their brethren in pop, hip-hop, K-pop and Latin music. Some of these TV films or docuseries were vanity projects used to promote new albums, of course; others started off as “making of” projects and ended up catching a star in a moment of real psychological crisis. It wasn’t all cinema verité; historical overviews capturing the full breadth of an artist’s career or even a genre still had their place in the pop-doc landscape.
Four films or limited series stand out in the subgenre of docs that were initially commissioned to capture an album or tour and, through circumstances, evolved into something deeper or darker. “Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me” (Apple TV+) was going to be a tour documentary, but then, when an emotional breakdown caused her to pull off the road,...

Ed Sheeran wasn't kidding when he said he'd put his career on pause if he lost a copyright lawsuit that accused him of using elements of the 1973 Marvin Gaye hit "Let's Get It On" in his 2015 hit "Thinking Out Loud" without permission. Before a jury ruled in his favor, Sheeran - who vehemently denied the accusations - threatened he would leave the music industry if he lost. People reported that, when his attorney questioned him on the stand about the toll the trial was taking on May 2, Sheeran replied: "If that happens, I'm done, I'm stopping." He added, "I find it really insulting to devote my whole life to being a performer and a songwriter and have someone diminish it."
In a May 5 interview on SiriusXM's "The Morning Mash Up," he explained that while he wouldn't have stopped performing, he was dead serious about putting down his songwriting pen.

Ed Sheeran, who is relatively mum about his private life, is going behind-the-music in his new Disney+ docuseries, touching on subjects like grief, mental health, love and loss.
“I never wanted to make a documentary that was [focused on the] sad pop star and feel sorry for [the] sad pop star,” Sheeran said Tuesday night at the New York City premiere of Ed Sheeran: The Sum of It All, which debuted Wednesday on Disney+ and follows the singer as he mourns the death of his best friend, supports his wife as she battles cancer while being pregnant and records his new album.
“What I think is really great about the documentary is the themes that it explores, everyone goes through. … Everyone goes through grief. Everyone goes through ups and downs of their mental health.”
“I know exactly what you mean, but the pop star went through some shit,” chimed in moderator and CBS This Morning host Gayle King.

As summer creeps closer, Disney+ is both honoring its sturdy franchises and trying something new.
The streamers list of new releases for May 2023 is highlighted by none other than The Muppets! The Muppets Mayhem premieres May 10 and will, of course, follow beloved musical act Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. The plot reads “Junior A&r executive Nora must deal with the madness caused by Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, who come face-to-face with the modern musical business as they try to record their first-ever platinum album.” But really all we needed to hear is that there will be Muppets singing.
Also arriving in May 2023 will be two new Star Wars titles, and wouldn’t you know it they’re both premiering on May 4 a.k.a. Star Wars Day. The lush animated collection Star Wars: Visions will be returning for its second volume while Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures...

Ed Sheeran has shared an emotional new single, “Boat,” along with a music video for the track. The song, off the singer’s forthcoming album Subtract, was written by the English seaside in winter and honestly reflects on depression, with Sheeran using a boat as a metaphor for attempting to keep the water at bay.

Ed Sheeran has released “Boat”, a new single described as a metaphor for depression.
The release follows “Eyes Closed”, the singer’s 14th chart-topping single in the UK.
Composed by the English seaside in the depths of winter, “Boat” is the opening song on the singer’s forthcoming album, Subtract.
An accompanying video, directed by Mia Barnes, shows the 32-year-old being engulfed by waves, echoing the singer’s comments on Instagram last month.
In a post announcing the album, Sheeran explained that Subtract reflects a period of turmoil. “I was spiralling through fear, depression and anxiety, I felt like I was drowning, head below the surface, looking up not but being able to break through for air.”
Sheeran recorded Subtract with Aaron Dessner in February last year, after experiencing various personal struggles.

Ed Sheeran is known for his heartfelt songs about love, loss, and relationships, but has remained pretty tight-lipped about his life outside of music over the years. Yet with the upcoming release of his Disney+ documentary, titled "Ed Sheeran: The Sum Of It All," the singer is opening up about his private life, including never-before-seen footage of him with his wife, Cherry Seaborn.
The couple have actually known each other since they were just 11 years old, after they both attended Thomas Mills High School in Suffolk.
