The player character, Takua, has a yellow body and arms and red feet in this game. In most other media, these colors are swapped.
The events of this game were directly continued in the Mata Nui Online Game (2001) (AKA Mata Nui Online Game) on LEGO's official Bionicle website.
The game's original title was "Tales of the Tohunga", referring to the tribal islanders of the Bionicle world. After Maori activists and representatives complained to LEGO for using words from their language and making money off them without their consent, the title was changed to "Quest for the Toa". The Maori are sensitive about the word "tohunga", as it refers to a group of historically ostracized traditional healers and craftsmen, but "toa" (meaning warrior) is a word that LEGO was allowed to keep using. As a result of this backlash, LEGO was forced to change the islanders' name to the made-up word Matoran in 2002, and they greatly diminished the Maori islander influence on their Bionicle toy brand. Unlike what a common misconception claims, the LEGO company was never actually sued by the Maori despite some activists threatening to do so. They met with Maori cultural representatives and settled the matter peacefully. Certain internet activists not affiliated with the official Maori representatives kept pining for a lawsuit even afterward, which is probably what lead to this misconception.
The main character Takua, introduced in this game, became one of the most popular characters in the Bionicle franchise. He was the star of the Mata Nui Online Game (2001) which was a direct sequel to this title, and later became the protagonist of his own movie, Bionicle: Mask of Light (2003), in which he transformed into the hero Takanuva. He was released four times as a toy, more than most other characters in the toy-line.
One of the more famous creatures thought to have been cut from the finished game is the Brakas monkey. Its only known images come from a Nintendo Power magazine article about the game, and an early game review. However in 2018, Bionicle fans managed to hack into the game's files and find the monkey's model in the game's sprite library, complete with a set of animations. It is not know why the Brakas doesn't appear in the game proper.
