Magpies are closely related to crows, jays and ravens. They have a reputation for being troublemakers, and are supposedly attracted to shiny things (although there is no actual evidence for this). When seen up close the magpie's black plumage reveals itself to be an iridescent sheen of purples, blues and greens. You can find magpies all year round in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and some parts of Scotland.

National Archives index E497-NSX. Digitisation of the first item on a wax cylinder found in two boxes donated to the Archives on the 27th February 1995 by an anonymous benefactor. The boxes contain several more cylinders, along with documents, photographs and assorted writings. The digitisation of these artefacts and the fanciful stories they contain was halted due to their low priority and a lack of funds.
