I must have watched a different movie than the others.
onefinesixtynine10 December 2014
This was literally one of the worst movies I've ever had the displeasure of watching. It was almost as if it was someone's first attempt at making a movie. There's no plot, no beginning, no middle, no end.. just a weird kid who wants to be tough trying to play tough, and wanting to make his mark on the world through ignorance. Save your time and money on this one. There's nothing about the characters, just one kid who supposedly has mental issues but what are they? Don't know, but he's got a bottle of pills he shows everyone he doesn't take. The new kid moved there because of what? Why does the new kid even hang with the weird kid? It's not like he's got transportation or even a quick wit. I'm really not sure what to think about this other than I could have used my time better cutting grass with scissors or catching flies with chop sticks.

There are no words!

Warning: Spoilers
The folks who gave this movie a great review have watched a different movie. Firstly, the main brain dead character Sean follows these group of Neanderthals around the entire movie. Only discovering at strategic points that they are nothing but a pack of sick morons. Yet, he still sticks with the pack through all their juvenile deeds the entire time. I'm happy I didn't watch to the end as my tolerance level for stupidity, weak story lines and bad acting is just too low when it comes to my movies. Watching paint dry would have provided more entertainment. I have now resorted to going on other forums for reviews. I can no longer depend or put any trust in IMDb's reviews. This waste of human resources should have been called 'As the zombies come'. Mainly because there was not 1 independent mind in the bunch.

Insanely Terrible Self Important Movie
danacianciotto2 June 2015
Awful writing, bad acting, and lousy directing makes this one of the worst movies I've ever seen...and I've seen a lot. "Look at me, look at me, I watched Clockwork Orange once and now I think I'm Kubrick!" is what this movie seems to say. You're not Kubrick, bro. This movie doesn't come close. It seems to have been written by a group of 12 year olds who never actually experienced adolescence who hero worship those kids who shot up Columbine. The dialogue is awful, the "roof moment" is some of the dumbest, self important baloney I've ever heard, and the kid who plays Ricky is about as believable as a talking rat. Watch this movie if you'd like to see a bunch of people in black clothing walking down the street very slowly while the camera shoots their feet because it's "soooo artistic!" Blech.

Worst movie 2014 nominee
djdaggoth4 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This is by far the worst movie I have seen out of 2014. I read some great reviews but I have a feeling they might have either known people in this production or saw the wrong movie. nothing makes sense about this plot. You have your typical "tough guy", who is actually a scrawny weirdo with bleach blond hair and a severely under-developed character. The main character has absolutely no individuality at all(which is the whole plot). The ending is terrible, so if you're like me and can't start a movie without finishing it...don't bother, it doesn't get better.

Spoilers:

Ricky and the gang are on top of a building screaming at group of people including the police who are after them. They escape down a fire escape after giving a speech about how different they are. Why did the group of 5+ policemen all go up the stairs on the inside instead of surrounding the building or even covering the fire escape?

The group of idiots goes to watch a movie and get kicked out, only to drop a firework in a popcorn machine while being escorted out of the theater. My only problem with this is that the police are immediately on their heels over this. Everyone knows who did it. The next day they're at school like nothing happened. Everyone knows that every kid involved would be pulled into the police station from school. Somehow these kids keep messing up over and over without any repercussions and that seems to be the entire movie.

There's a giant underground bar/rave going on 24/7 in a shack hidden away in what looks like a bad part of downtown. Of course this underground place is called "underground" (so original). In this place kids do drugs all day and rave while drinking underage. The owner of the place says that the cops called wanting to know if the group of kids who set off the cherry bomb in the movie theater "hang around here". So the police know about this giant underground place that kids do drugs all day long and drink...that makes sense. So, why is it that the police act so surprised to discover this place after being "tipped off"? Also, to top it off, they make it appear as if Ricky is dealing drugs out of the place. He gives a wad of money to the owner of the bar/rave and the guy counts it and tells Ricky he's short. He responds that he took his friends to a movie. The guy is angry but still gives him more drugs to sell even though he's short. Also, who deals drugs in paper bags? What is even being sold? He only owed him $200 for a giant paper bag. Are they selling dirt weed out of brown paper sacks? The only drug you ever see anyone doing is coke, which I assure you isn't sold in folded up brown sacks.

I could go on for hours about this terrible movie, but I won't.

Mischief Night opens a much needed conversation.
trevorsnarr9 November 2013
"With its nod to Clockwork Orange, Mischief Night, directed by Richard Zelniker, avoids every cliché and cheap trick, instead forcing us inside the pain, fear and excruciating confusion that lives inside so many people today. It doesn't look 'at' a social issue and offer a glossy solution. It demands that we feel the desperation of its trapped protagonists. Who is the hero and who is the villain? No easy answer there either. We all have a voice. A passionate, but weary English teacher (portrayed with such humanity by Moe Irvin) offers a path. Shakespeare. Poetry. But this writer, director, producers and stunning cast walk us down that path and lead the way for every kid, parent, citizen, human asking not just 'Why did another kid take a gun to school?' and 'Why did another horrific killing happen?' The pain is intolerable. The fear is constant. And the answers too quiet and too late. Mischief Night opens a much needed conversation. No. It demands it from a roof top.

And about that director, Richard Zelniker found a soft-spoken boy with a volcano inside of him and put that voice on screen. Where so many filmmakers today rely on horrific violence, gore and external terror to hold our attention, Zelniker somehow makes us feel every painful moment without ever taking the easy way out. An adult film about childhood agony that reveals itself so exquisitely, you are left shaken to the core without one 'shock shot'. Like The Hurt Locker, your heart is in your mouth from the first five minutes through the final exhale. Beautifully photographed, the images are terrifying and haunting in the best way. How does a film that never jolts you with that sudden scream keep you so wrapped? Zelniker and his cast jolt us awake. Complacency is not an option. Helter Skelter, Clockwork Orange, and The Outsiders have a companion for the shelf. I really didn't want to, but Zelniker made me look.

And now I can't close my eyes."

awful
javs111 December 2014
I've just seen this movie and the only thing i can say is please please please those people who wrote rave reviews about the film on this page stop doing things like that. You are bringing IMDb reputation to it's knees, and whatever reason you have to write those reviews is clearly wrong. The film is simply awful!!!! you know it, i know it. The acting is bad, the situations unrealistic to say the least, the direction amateurish with a guy wearing two different tops on the same scene from one second to the next. Our main character and hero of the film spends the majority of it acting like a retard when the easiest thing would be to just go home. so there you go guys save yourselves 1 hour and 45 minutes of pain and watch "a clockwork orange" an authentic masterpiece.

What happens when you get in with the wrong crowd.
briancgardell29 July 2015
Finally, a movie that makes me think! A nonstop ride, from our children's perspective. This movie shows what goes on behind the scenes. Our kids only tell us what we want to hear. Maybe as parents we should start asking more questions, and being more involved. Very well done, highly recommended. I like the way that the film was done, very clean technique, with many different angles. Characters were well portrayed throughout the entire film length. The dialogue was realistic and very well written. A must see movie for teenagers who feel lost, and don't have anywhere to turn. All aspects of this film kept my attention, and made me feel like I was watching the scene right in front of my eyes. It made me wonder if I really knew everything that goes on with my kids.

A conversation our society need to be having!
jvdeforte-226-34674130 January 2015
Important movies like this do not come along very often anymore. Unlike a lot of other movies that rely on a simple plot mixed with sex and violence, this movie is character driven and successfully relies on its storytelling. It is one of the few movies out there that directly and realistically faces a very serious issue in society today. ALL parents, teachers, principals and guidance counselors need to watch this movie and directly discuss what is happening in out society today. A must see, it is a conversation our society need to be having! Well paced a intelligently crafted to give you dynamics that come from the characters emotions keeps the story moving. Few movies today discuss real issues that are relevant to what we need to be discussing as a society.

Well done & Entertaining!
tmo6279 April 2016
It's not often lately that i sit through an entire Movie at home from start to finish, but it was easy and enjoyable to do while watching As Night Comes! I thought the story was well told and enjoyed the use of flashbacks so that I did not know what had happened until it was revealed to me. I thought the talent did a good job, you could feel and imagine their angst, vulnerability and emotion. I appreciated how the Director and DP shot the film with what I imagine was probably a limited budget. I have already recommended this movie to others and will continue to do so. If you are looking for a coming of age film where the characters deal with real consequences to their actions then As Night Comes is the right movie for you!

scarily relevant
Jbr-35175 January 2020
Reminiscent of Clockwork Orange and the Class of 1984 the film creates its own universe that is too familiar to our own. Too many reports of a charismatic person drawing in a crowd who will follow no matter where the path will lead. Very good cast with a standout leading performance who is unlike the leads in other films with this subject. Makes you wince while you are locking the doors. Richard Zelniker does an excellent job creating this environment and making this film look rich in color and mood.

Well done independent
neighbs90930 January 2015
A teen genre film that doesn't disappoint. We all can relate to the jocks, the preppies, and the outcasts, and the sometimes difficult transition period of high school. Newcomer, Sean, the son of two hopeless alcoholics drifts, with a group of outcasts, led by the charismatic creeper, Ricky Gladstone. Sean has his eyes on preppy Sarah, who runs with the jocks. There lies the dilemma. Does Sean clean up his act and go with Sarah, or wreak havoc with Ricky and his band of outcasts on mischief night? Good performances by newcomers, Myko Oliver, who plays Sean, and Luke Baines, who plays Ricky. A nice study of teenage alienation, peer pressure, and the difficult choices many teens ultimately have to make that may determine the direction of their entire lives.

Not what I expected... but good
pinkkitty30 January 2015
This movie wasn't exactly what I was expecting but it was compelling. I was interested in the characters' relationships. I think it really depicted high school well. It was very sad, which I actually liked because so many movies nowadays you watch and you don't really care about the characters, you don't really feel anything when you're done- it's just entertainment. But this movie felt very... emotional, but in a quiet way. Which is a good thing IMO. Maybe some people just want to be entertained when they see movies, but I want to feel stuff, I want to be pulled into the world of the movie. I really felt like I was in this guy's life. Also I really liked the soundtrack!

Great Movie with interesting subject matter
johnralstoncraig27 May 2015
I really enjoyed this movie. it's a great example of storytelling that is honest and raw. and I really appreciate the subject matter. It's bold.

In addition to bold subject matter, the acting is really great and as intense as the storyline.

I felt like there was a lot at stake and it held my attention the whole time, I really appreciate a story that can do that.

Richard Zelniker is a very talented director and his film goes a long way into exploring the darker side of teen angst. The direction is great. I'm glad I saw this one!

It's not just a movie. It's a lesson in life!
SteveC129 November 2013
Richard, congrats on a film of great social significance as well as entertainment. The sign of a great movie is how it can influence your thinking well after seeing it. I reflect on my own high school days and I even reached out to some old friends and re-socialized. Privilege being part of your film. It's not just a movie. It's a lesson in life and a tool to mend past mistakes!

Deeply moved by the message of this movie and impressed with everyone's work. Masterfully acted, directed, edited, filmed, proud to have been a part of it and looking so forward to the message helping young people who are seeking their own answers in this troubling world as well as myself who ended up reflecting and reaching out to people from 30 years ago and mending some fences. We all choose sides, sometimes by choice, sometimes by necessity. Mischief Night is a brilliant film about how hard those choices can be and how those choices can effect you 3 decades later. Congrats to everyone! This film is not merely entertainment. It's a tool to help save a society that's lost its course.

A Dark Look Into a Dark World
steven-roy-902-19175723 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Disturbing, uncomfortable, and uplifting all at the same time.

There is no "protagonist" anywhere among this great young cast that features Luke Baines as the deeply dysfunctional leader of a group dubbed "The Misfits" and Myko Olivier as the Misfits' apparent "odd-man out." As the Misfits pre-Halloween rampage escalates from petty crime through the gamut of assault, battery, arson and murder Olivier's Sean Holloway provides a reluctant counterpoint of conscience to Baines' Ricky Gladstone, who grows more and more fond of the havoc as the plot unfolds. We eventually see them both as different sides of the same very tarnished coin - one "redeemable," the other irretrievably lost in the mire. In the end, we're not quite sure which is which.

The lighting and camera work for this piece give the impression you are viewing a live Hieronymus Bosch painting; simultaneously fascinating, scary, beautiful, repellent, and symbolic. Whether deliberately our not, the many odd points of view, and the disjointed compelling images put one in mind of Kubrick (Clockwork Orange) and some of the disorienting images in Hitchcock's films.

The production values on the film are awesome! It looks more like a 20 million dollar film than a film made for what I know it was made for.

I saw this movie in a distributor screening. Here's hoping someone picks this up so that others can enjoy it too. The last time I had a similar feeling about a pre-release showing was a few years ago… the film was Gods and Monsters. I left that one thinking "too bad it doesn't have distribution and we are the only audience that will see it" too. Hope Mischief Night does just as well!
