Another winner!
bjk19614 January 2014
I couldn't be happier! Marco Berger touched my heart again with this winning dramatic romance between two timid individuals, unsure of life and love. "Hawaii" makes the perfect addition to the collection of Marco Berger's offerings. Be sure to catch them all. They make a perfect film festival all by themselves.

"Hawaii" lays out the day to day interactions between Eugenio (played by the unconventionally handsome Manuel Vignau, "Bruno" from "Plan B") and Martín (played by Mateo Chiarino) that build a budding romance neither knows how to address. Tension builds until, finally, a fateful kiss that changes everything. I spent the rest of the movie repeating the mantra "please, please, please, please" for the perfect ending. See if I got my wish...

Pride and prejudice
Persona198617 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Hawaii is Marco Berger's third solo feature film that comes to close a trilogy of sorts began with Plan B (2009) and continued with Ausente (2011). It's also very likely the best of the three with clear points in common with its two predecessors. The film begins with an overture where the main characters are introduced. Martín (Mateo Chiarino) is looking for a summer job in a small provincial town. He is homeless, we see him staying outdoors in some piece of ground with his very few possessions. Eugenio (Manuel Vignau)is staying at his uncle's, taking care of the property while his uncle is out, using time to work on a novel he is writing. This first part features almost not direct sound but an extra diegetic quasi-melodramatic orchestral arrangement. The second part starts when Martín arrives at Eugenio's place and begins to perform various maintenance works there. From their first encounter we learn they were childhood friends, that Martín used to swim in the property's pool, but now their relationship will be crossed buy an inevitable boss-employee link. The movie yet does not completely fall into some sort of "social realism". Eugenio and Martín's relationship develops into a bucolic tale, where the ambiguity of their intentions plays a fundamental role. Martín may be in a situation of abandonment, but he doesn't tell the truth to Eugenio from the beginning and pretends to be staying with some non existent aunt. Eugenio, on the other hand, takes care of his childhood friend, lends him new clothes, invites him to bath in the house and to swim in the pool, cures him when he cuts with some rusty wire and, when he finds out Martín has been lying about his aunt and is living outdoors, offers him a room. Eugenio needs to insist as Martín does not want to bother his employer and benefactor. An even if Eugenio's intentions are noble and born out of compassion, he can't avoid, with these actions, underlining their uneven, and, for that reason, somewhat uncomfortable relationship: Eugenio is in good financial position, he is a bourgeois, an artist, and the one who pays; Martín is poor, helpless, working-class, the one getting paid. But, for a good part of the movie, these social differences seem to get almost erased as their friendly relationship grows, as they have some kind of regression to childhood, playing child games and visiting old places that bring memories back (something that links this film to Plan B) I remember an Internet meme about Jane Austen novels: it features a female character saying something like "I love him, but he can't know it" and a male character saying "I love her, but she can't know it". Add to this the typical class tensions in Austen's work and you can see how Hawaii plays in these same coordinates. There are many subtle insinuations between both men, but, until the last part of the movie, it's not quite clear if there is a romantic attraction or if Eugenio's actions are born simply out of compassion, and Martin's out of gratitude. What comes to break this dreaminess of the semi-nude bodies in the summer (though far from the sticky atmosphere of Berger's short film Platero, Hawaii's summer is not an unbearable ball of heat in an overcrowded house but a clear and luminous countryside vision), this 'bucolism' of grass and plants and rivers (water, there's a lot of water in the film: the crook, the pool, Martín's bottle to drink, the faucet which he 'steals' water to wash himself of, Eugenio's house shower) is the coming of Eugenio's older brother, which constitutes a key moment (and a very powerful one). I don't want to spoil it, so I will just say it's a scene full of (verbal) cruelty but with certain honesty and accuracy that makes it even more painful. The romantic daydream is broken (the micro-climate created by having only two characters interacting in the same locations for most of the film is destroyed), the (insuperable?) social tensions and distance (re) appear at the center of the scene. The 'phantasmatic' epilogue that follows reminds us of Ausente's ending, though, I dare to say, with more subtlety and effectiveness. Special mention to both main actors. Berger's years of studying theater and as a theater teacher are noticeable, he brings out great performances from the leads and deserves to be consider a great actor's director. Vignau is in a different register to Plan B's Bruno, more obscure, bereft of the funny arrogance of that character, and full of the required ambiguity. Uruguayan Mateo Chiarino is extraordinarily photogenic, but much more than just a pretty face: the way he portrays Martín's abandonment is remarkable, in his way of speaking, his elusive eyes, his attitude that might resemble a stray dog the has found a helping hand but is still apprehensive.

Very Enjoyable Film
ganymedelvr8 April 2019
I watched this movie last night and really enjoyed it. The two leads are attractive and enjoyable to watch, and the acting was wonderful - the unspoken attraction was very evident on their faces - and the slow build up rather than just one pouncing on the other immediately was a refreshing change.

The film's quiet scenes to me were actually a great metaphor for the unspoken attraction....how often do we find ourselves attracted to someone and longing to tell them, but remaining silent and just 'observing' them from a distance? There was a subtle beauty in the non-dialogue filled moments that allowed the actors to convey what the characters were feeling through their eyes, their smiles, etc.

This being a foreign film was, to me, a lot better than it would have been as an American made offering. I have enjoyed many American made gay films, but I have to confess that the foreign ones are, to me, overall better in story and quality, plus the gorgeous scenery of the locations are a plus as well.

Gay-themed films, which I watch a lot of, have to go a long, long way to surpass what has become my favorite in years (Esteros) but this film definitely ranks up in the pack of ones I've really enjoyed over time.

a beautiful film. for silence and words. for the tension and new values of ordinary gestures. for the definition of friendship who explores the nuances more than significance. for the special joy, high delicacy, science to use the detail in gentle manner. a film about a meeting after long time, the search to reconquest the years of youth and the root of present dialog. sure, it is not a surprise. Argentinian cinema has many special films but this case seems be real special. for the tension who has not only sexual level. for the wise manner to use each scene as seed of the other. for the spring air , using a form of innocence who becomes the bridge between characters. a film who is not bad to see. for a rare state of emotions.

I couldn't stop thinking of the cat
euroGary1 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Young(ish) writer Eugenio returns to his childhood home in a small Argentine town. At the same time, another of the town's prodigal sons also comes home: Martín, searching unsuccessfully for a long-lost relative. Homeless and short of funds, Martín starts doing odd-jobs around town and eventually knocks on Eugenio's door, looking for work. It transpires the pair knew each other as children and it isn't long before they are reliving happy childhood memories such as, er, stoning a cat to death. But Eugenio is homosexual and through his actions (spying on Martín in the bathroom; buying him clothes) it is clear he's hoping for more from the relationship than animal abuse. What will Martín's reaction be?

I could have done with director Marco Berger pulling back the camera at times; he loves the close-up so much that we never get an idea of how big are the house and grounds that much of the action takes place in because we never see so much as a single wall in full shot (this also means that in the few, mostly out-of-focus, incidences of nudity it's impossible to tell whether the viewer is seeing actors Manuel Vignau and Mateo Chiarino or uncredited body doubles). And the amount of shots that seem centred on Messrs Vignau and Chiarino's crotches is bordering on embarrassing. But the two leads do a nice job of portraying a growing relationship that seems based mainly on friendship rather than repressed desire; indeed (MAJOR SPOILER ALERT!) I'm rather glad we didn't see them consummate their relationship; somehow, that would have spoiled things.

A beautiful film full of tension, beautiful imagery and fantastic mood.
elckct209025 January 2014
Finally got to see Hawaii by one of my favorite filmmakers, Argentine Marco Berger. I was not disappointed, what a beautiful film full of tension, beautiful imagery and fantastic mood. Manuel Vignau, whom we've seen in Berger's film Plan B is mature in this film, exciting, intriguing. And balancing this portrayal is the also fantastic Mateo Chiarino. Both are just purely fantastic. The film is full of layers that are to be explored and understood for emotional context and in there is where you find the strength of this film which is full of silence, yet so much is being told. I personally love films like this and Mr. Berger is a master at showing and not telling, yet the small moments of conversation between the characters seem so full of importance and nuance you cannot help but to completely lose yourself in their story, this is a film that deserves a watch and maybe a couple more after that.

Simple Complexities
rlculpepper25 February 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Marco Berger's Spanish language Hawaii is small with a simple story made into something more than the narrative. Boy meets boy, boy becomes attracted to boy but doesn't know what to do about it, there's a history; what's going to happen?) Berger uses long scenes of pause on scenery, character's processing, and body framing that evokes erotic tension, to evolve the story into an unfolding emotional journey. He's talented at using all the elements of film; character posturing, shot framing, scenery, music and dialogue to that result. The sparse dialogue incites and exhibits complication in human behavior rather than define everything. (Except a scene I thought was clumsy between Eugenio and a visiting relative where the dialogue makes perfectly clear the situation.) I read that disparity in character vocabulary is used to manifest class difference, which was lost in translation on me (subtitles ;-). Class or status is a component of the character's stories but I missed it as a struggle between them aside from Martin's shame of his situation. Intentional or not, Berger's themes are fodder for porn fantasy. However, he engages them as real world, contemplative journeys of discovery, though certainly sexually charged. Berger's use of eroticism is a bit obvious in this. Perhaps because I've seen his moves before, they stand out as a bit contrived. Berger might just be f****ng with you in using setups he's probably seen in porn and turning them into something else, he's a tease. I didn't get a powerful sense of chemistry between the leads. The guys are handsome real world types. Manuel Vignau gives Eugenio purpose and inner workings that make the character interesting. He radiates charm and warmth in simple shrugs and smiles. Mateo Chiarino's charming too. His angelic good looks and almost wide eyed innocence are engaging. He's good as the down on his luck Martin but he doesn't match Vignau's abilities so he's out classed in many scenes. Maybe intentional, but it made question any attraction beyond the physical. I suspect Marco Berger will be doing "bigger" things soon. I applaud him telling these small stories that he wants to tell. If you haven't seen his other films, you should. For me he's played out this toy box. But that said, I hope that he continues using his beautiful voice to tell stories of this genre.

Clean, brilliant, a piece of film art
billy_dana22 May 2014
I was first introduced to Marco Berger with "Plan B", still one of my favorite films. In both that film and "Hawaii" Mr. Berger has done some of the finest modern story-telling I've had the pleasure to experience.

These are definitely NOT American films - they are slow to develop, sparse on dialogue and largely visual in nature. Those qualities by themselves make these films creative and interesting. But it is the development of both the story and the characters that really bring the films to life.

The single item that makes a film work (in my estimation) is whether or not an audience can feel that a character has come to life in the film - has come alive, feels real to us. "Hawaii" does that every bit as effectively as "Plan B." It is an additional measure of quality (and a great treat) that a film have more to say to an audience on a second, third or fourth viewing. Both of these films do that handily.

It is of particular note in this film to watch the slow building of a relationship between these two men. And, as in "Plan B", their sexuality in some respects is incidental to the connection the men in both films form. There is a breadth and depth to these relationships that seems rare these days in film.

Can't recommend both "Plan B" and "Hawaii" enough. Outstanding films.

A bit slow, but enjoyable
clark-961724 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
So there was alot wrong with the film. The music in the beginning that lasted for 10 minutes until the title screen, and then after the title screen...the music came back. There was alot of unnecessary music and underscore but because there was so few dialogue spoken they had to fill the silence with something.

This movie is a very slow burn. I expected that it would take a while before they both realized they were attracted to one another, but it all took too long. 1hr45min. I expected 40ish minutes to discover the attraction and then the rest of the film to show the growth of the relationship. All the buildup for a kiss...it left me with a sense of blueballs so to speak. I expected more. With that being said I still enjoyed the film. And it had a happy ending which is very rare in gay films that aren't comedies.

Watch it or don't watch it. It's not cinematic masterpiece so you can go your entire life without seeing it and not regret it. But again, I enjoyed the film.

Staggeringly Brilliant
donwc19967 May 2014
Marco Berger continues to redefine film in ways that simply have not been done before, making him the most innovative and creative filmmaker working today. Granted, his subject matter is remote from the audience mainstream and his appeal may possibly be quite limited, but his approach to film is so new, so advanced, that it really does leave you gasping for air. And sitting at the edge of your seat because what you are seeing is so new unlike anything ever done before in film. One thing does stand out for me, at least, and it is that Berger must find 2001: A Space Odyssey the ultimate film ever made because Berger pays homage to 2001 in virtually every scene he shoots, simply by virtue of the pace of the scene as well as the camera placement. As far as theme is concerned, Berger continues to convey the central idea that men in bonding with one another wish only to remain as innocent as children, forever playing in the sun, basking in the glory of pure friendship that remains for all time.

Hawaii Review
masergela26 April 2015
I've watched the movie itself. And in my opinion, though it wasn't good, neither bad at all. Noticed that there are scenes, I guess, were there with no apparent reason as it has no conversation at all. The actors were merely looking at each other, viewers could not imagine to what they were thinking or trying to portray and for which that scene was? Aside from the very slow character development, it misses to give more emphasize on the climax of the story. Honestly, I was left hanging. I would recommend it to my friends and I did enjoy it as a whole. I can somewhat relate to the story, if not the film was made in Argentina, I would say that, it's a copycat of my own life story. Honestly, I fell in love with the character of Mateo Chiarino (Martin), very manly and appealing to the story. Hope to see more of Mateo's movies.

Spectacular

Beautiful movie. Flawless. The direction is amazing. The music is just as fantastic as the photography, locations, story and editing. I really enjoyed every aspect of it. The work of the actors is a pleasure to the senses. They are completely natural and seem effortless in every scene, word and gesture. Manuel Vignau and Mateo Chiarino are really worth following. I'm sure that after "Hawaii", we will hear a lot more from them. I think it's a gift and a joy for the public and not as common as it should, seeing performances like the ones this two actors deliver in this film. This is the first Marco Berger movie (director) I have seen and I cannot wait to see more. He is honest, sensitive and clearly a perfectionist. It's a really poetic and subtle love story that moves you in a very special way. I really appreciate the fact that anybody can relate to this story and to their characters, their fears and their dreams, no matter what their sexual orientation might be. A very intimate and personal film.No gay clichés here. Non. "Hawaii" leaves you with a smile on your face and with very high spirits. If you can buy it, do, it's the kind of movie that you can see more than once.

Looks like someone's fantasy made it to production!
brenswee27 November 2019
Not much happening here. There were so many parts that are strange and made me kinda cringe. eg. If I had a cut on my thigh, I wouldn't need a person to dress it for me while my package was in their face! Likewise with the guy waiting and watching while his friend tries on the clothes to see if they fit... I found myself shaking my head.

Not that good and unnecessary slow
jebotecovjece3 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I've been watching a lot of gay movies recently and this one is the worst so far. I like slow movies with moments to think and with only a few characters, but this one was even for me too much. Empty scenes and silence are only good if there is a meaning behind it. The whole story seemed pointless and so did most of the scenes. The close ups of the guys crotches were so overdone (we get it- it's a gay movie). Everything in this movie seemed to be shot for the sake of looking artistic or deep. But they just copied the outer shell of such movies and wrapped their hollow story with it. So now we have something that seems like someone's first try. There was no chemistry between these guys. I just couldn't buy it. Their relationship is based on what? On not talking to each other and weirdly looking at each other body parts? At one moment it seemed like half the movie these guys are drying themselves with a towel! There are just too many unnecessary scenes in this movie. I think the most important thing to start a relationship is to enjoy each other's company, to laugh, have fun and TALK. The guys don't know anything about each other. After 2,3 weeks this guy asks the other- hey, what are you writing? Come on! And the last scene was unexplained (I guess because of lazy writing) and totally not-magical or romantic. The guy disappeared for a while and suddenly appeared again and had nothing to say. And the kissing scenes were really bad. The movie could have been so much more.

the past. and its possibility to be basis of present. a film about other as part of your definition. remarkable for its delicacy and touching nuances. for the precision of acting and for the exploitations of small, ordinary gestures. a film who impress. the cause - its smart mixture between vulnerability of the lead characters worlds. the atmosphere who reminds memories of viewer and a lot of hypothesis about story evolution. and for the balance of ages as land for memories. a seductive movie. for its details . for the tension. for the crumbs of childhood as pillar of ages. and, sure, for its end. a kind of gem. or, maybe, only a delicate picture from a summer.

Although be the plot be too slow, the direction is amazing as well as the soundtrack, the ambience is calm and cozy. But the characters just stay staring to each other with no action, and when this happen is to late to develop something.

You already know this story
tomasdavisd1 April 2020
It feels just like when you were a kid and you felt attracted to that friend of yours:

The silent moments waiting for something to be said, the observing, thoughts running through your head, failed attempts to get attention in the right direction, the insistence, the uncertainty... The "I want you but I want you to be the one who makes the move."

With this movie I can remember the sensations I went through while discovering what true attraction feels like. They do a great job in beautiful silent scenes that comunicate way more than the spoken ones.

Beautiful, Understated but Powerful Gay-Themed film
xscd7 May 2014
¡Qué buena película! Although it's very slow and the "music" is a little distracting at times, especially during the extended beginning sequence, this is an excellent Spanish-language gay-themed movie from Argentina.

The camera and director linger on small details and gestures, and create a very credible atmosphere and true tension and drama despite very little dialog.

I enjoyed this movie so much that I almost immediately watched it again. Perhaps not for those who prefer fast-paced action movies, I found this movie to be very engaging, interesting and fulfilling.

Highly recommended.

One of my favorite gay films ever. A charming tale about a young man (Martín, played by Mateo Chiarino) who is down on his luck, homeless and poor much of his life who returns to his birth town and randomly goes to work for a childhood friend (Eugenio, played by Manuel Vignau) as a handy man. The wealthy Eugenio, who is gay, takes a liking to the attractive Martin and eventually provides him with clothes and a place to stay. Eugenio subtly hits on Eugenio, who is seemingly blind to the advances. Both characters are deftly played, very nice directing and a storyline that at times is suspenseful. Won't give a spoiler but the ending is worthy sticking around for. Very enjoyable movie! Parental alert: frontal nudity by both actors, but not overboard with it.

silent, slow and poetic

Warning: Spoilers
This is one of those films that shouldn't be categorized as a ''gay love'' film. And usually, being categorized is the main reason why the movie was so underminded, by some of the people from the lgbt community who likes to see movies that focus more on human's sexuality and/or sexual/eroticism. Because the movie was being categorized, not many people and/or critics outside of the lgbt community, cares enough to even bother to give this movie a watch. Because this movie is truly beautiful. Remember what I said before ? This movie didn't necessarily focus on sexuality. Yeah it had a few *eye catching* moments here and there, but only to highlight the realistic and ordinary - the life of the two main protagonists, Martin and Eugenio. Yes, this movie focused more on the two characters; their development and history. The further the story lines goes, the more contrary it becomes with the movie's slow paced. Not only the story line being highlighted, but also the out-look and the music in this movie deserves a notice. Scenes with literature meanings, gets you to actually think, not just stare. The music sounds like a silent orchestra, gives you this nostalgic feels, the get-away and the returning to home, adds to the theme of this film. The two things created such hollow and vague atmosphere, that your mind will be lost in it. As for the dialogue, it was also something that feels very close to home. It's intimate, sometimes a little awkward, bringing this movie to life. And each character's dialogue truly highlights their personality *watch to see*, showing the contradiction between the two characters, but only to develop into something touching, sweat and adorable.

It's a wonderfully romantic film, but...
startlepoint30 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This film has beautiful colors, music, and atmosphere. The men are attractive yet don't have that artificially buffed-up gym look, which makes them all the more compelling. Sometimes, I wish the inevitable romance had moved along a little more quickly. Letting it linger (with predictable sexual innuendo) helps keep the audience in suspense, I suppose, but the delay is sometimes annoyingly coy. And I cannot understand why the character who had initiated the physical intimacy in the first place had to recoil after receiving that first kiss.

Yes, I enjoyed watching the evolving romance of these two guys and their childhood reminiscence -- that is until they both smugly refer to the time they stoned a cat to death (and don't seem to feel any remorse). Somehow, this put a damper on my appreciation of their "sensitivity" and made me care about them less. If I could edit out those lines, I'd like the film much more. But come to think of it, the cat reference in the film might be a sinister narrative trick to make us realize that these two guys are, in reality, a couple of self-centered creeps whom we should care nothing about!

Definitely deserving of a 10./10.
unicornsarepeopleto28 July 2016
Hawaii's scarce use of dialogue may put you off at first, but the beautiful music that fills up the emptiness surely makes up for it. Every time they do speak, it's either something simple or profound. The overall "feel" of the film is homely and warm. The softness of their voices adds to it. The tension between the characters is totally palpable and frankly adorable. There isn't really any sexual content, which was a pleasant surprise to me. But I digress. Definitely don't watch this if you're in a rush. Take your time, rewatch it many times. Soak it up. There's a lot of heart in this movie that has you feeling a thousand things at once. The setting is beautiful, the camera work keeps things interesting, the acting is really natural and easy to watch, and when it's over you'll wish there was more. Hawaii avoids clichés while maintaining a kind-of-plot (the one down-side: not a whole lot going on besides two men falling in love, but I, personally, don't mind at all, and I don't think you will either). It's realistic and tender and just pretty neat! Definitely deserving of a 10/10.

It's gentle and real and heartbreakingly true to life. I'm obsessed with all of the men he shows in his films. They come across as real and beautiful, human.

If you are not a Latino you may feel that the way they act is not real. However, putting aside all the sexual tension, Latino men behave like that with their friends ( yes, even guys over 35 years old can be so 'childish' among friends while having a wonderful wife and children at home). I have to mention that because for many viewers their interaction is like fantasy or unreal.... but not, it is real
