Sigur Rós, an Icelandic post-rock band, was hired as the wedding band for King Joffery's wedding ceremony. Their version of 'The Rains of Castamere' can be heard during the end credits of the episode, and the three of them are the ones whom the king throws coins at. One of the band members was unintentionally hurt quite badly when one of the coins hit him right in the forehead, even though it was made of rubber for safety.
According to George R.R. Martin, Joffrey's death during his wedding feast was inspired by the death of Prince Eustace of Boulogne in 1153, who died from choking on his food at dinner, though some historians believe poisoning was the actual cause of death.
The first appearance of Dean-Charles Chapman as Tommen Baratheon. Callum Wharry previously played the role in the first two seasons, but because the character had a much heavier role in season 4, a more experienced actor was needed. Chapman first appeared in the series as Tommen's cousin, Martyn Lannister, in season three. According to writer/producer Bryan Cogman, Chapman was never cast as Martyn with the idea to have him later play Tommen as well, in order to establish a strong family resemblance between the characters; when production decided to re-cast Tommen, Chapman happened to be available and was felt to be a good fit.
This is the fourth and last episode of the series written by George R.R. Martin. Martin had intended to write an episode for every season, but stopped to concentrate on writing the sixth "A Song of Ice and Fire" novel, "The Winds of Winter". As of 2023, four years after the show's ending, he was still writing.
The scene in which Joffrey asks Tyrion to get his drink just before taking his fatal sip had to be re-shot several times. Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey kept laughing when Jack Gleeson said the line "Hurry up, this pie is dry", as they thought it sounded like a sexual double-entendre.
Bryan Cogman: Writer and story editor, as the servant waiting on Stannis and Selyse as they have dinner.
