Franz-Josef Deutschmann, a WWII veteran, still raves about seeing Hitler at the 1936 Olympics. The newspaper boy Niels gets to hear his stories from the war, while the old man puts marches like "Old Comrades" on the record player. He doesn't want to have anything to do with his neighbors, who are increasingly made up of foreigners. He avoids street festivals, goes to his comrade meetings and is looking forward to his grandson Tobias moving in soon, who is his pride and joy. Otherwise, Deutschmann is always standing on the balcony and using binoculars to watch the Turkish family from across the street. When their son pulls up in a new limousine, Deutschmann calls the police and assumes the car has been stolen. He also warns neighbors, who listen to music too loud. In the evening the grandson is supposed to come over with his new girlfriend and Deutschmann goes shopping and prepares a feast. When Tobias and Mirabella, a woman from Portugal, appear in the apartment, Deutschmann drops the cooking spoon and cannot believe that his grandson has brought a foreigner to him. Tobias turns away from his grandfather and does not want to move in with him anymore, whereupon the old man is completely done with the world. When Deutschmann is brutally attacked in his apartment a few days later, and his savings were stolen, he received unexpected help..
