Twelve-year-old Estela lives with her father, her brother Heli, his young wife and their baby boy in a dilapidated, two-room house somewhere in a downgraded region of central Mexico. Secretly in love with Beto, a seventeen-year-old police recruit who would like to marry her and run away together, Estela allows him to hide a cocaine package in her home. Soon, the local drug cartel, a special police unit, and the military discover who stole the drugs, and an endless spiral of violence commences, putting in grave danger Heli's family.
