One of my first and best gaming experiences
raclarke-786882 May 2019
Battlefield 4 compared to Battlefield Hardline and Battlefield 5 is a masterpiece. I remember playing the campaign and feeling the true emotions in the first scene. You start in a car that is submerged underwater, you are trapped with your four brothers in arms. On the radio you can hear the song "Total Eclipse of the Heart" further adding to the tense beginning. You are left with the choice to shoot out the window saving your two uninjured comrades but leave behind your heavily wounded commanding officer. It was a scene that you really need to see to feel. The campaign was great even though it was overlooked by the Call of Duty series Modern Warfare 3, but got its time to shine when Ghosts let down many players who wanted a better game. The multiplayer is very reminiscent of Battlefield 3 which is why many people probably thought of it as a mediocre game. I have many great memories of meeting people in squads who were the nicest people. Honestly, this game is fun to revisit as BF5 has let down so many fans with it's politicization if it's content. The game is really fun and with the EA all access (for Xbox) most of the DLC game free. So if you are looking for a quality game for next gen consoles that is good then BF4 is your game

Near-masterpiece!

AWESOME!

I still play this game on Origin when my crappy PC permits!

Battlefield 3 was great, but 4 proved to be even better!

Buy it while the community is still active -- epic times await!

One of the best Battlefield games out there
theoledoux24 April 2021
There's no doubt in my mind that BF4 is superior to most other franchise entries. And yes, that includes BF3. BF3 was amazing, but BF4 simply feels more complete in terms of customization and ways to play. If you disagree, I challenge you to go back to BF3 for a week. You will miss a lot of BF4 features. The campaign is short and sweet. The music is fantastically produced to reflect the mood of the entire game. Still play it to this day and having an absolute blast.

its a greate game. worth getting
roachytuts213 December 2014
I used to play call of duty a lot years a go and i started getting board of it because all the COD games are all the same. so i decided to buy battlefeild and when they first bought it out they had problems with the game. but it has all been fixed. the story mode is great. but it can be a bit hard. online is really good because i like the way you can destroy the building and you can use cars, planes, boats, helicopters, and more. it is evan better if you play online with a friend because you can team up. i think battlefeild is worth trying if you are a first person shooter. also i think call of duty need to add something different to they game to keep the series going.

Underrated
SHANELESTER972 May 2019
So this currently stands at 7.8, definitely underrated, I expected it to be at least a 9, way better than BF1 which is overrated, BF4 is traditional modern combat, the maps are a bundle of chaotic fun, even a friend of mine who's played through the series agrees that this is underrated. Maps like Shanghai, Locker and Golmud are just great, the Campaign may be short but it's still good I think. So it's a 10 from me.

Must buy! COD Ghosts was put to shame.
rlrl-20-1595276 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
What can I say? This game is awesome! From the gunfights to the tank battles to the destruction, it's all in the bag.

Where do I start?

Single player: Not as good as I thought, nonetheless I enjoyed it. DICE could've vamped the story up to a prestigious level like COD BO2.

Multi player: BLEW MY MIND AWAY! Improvement over BF3. No more dying to an M16A3 every single time. Weapon balance and variety is excellent, maps are great, and vehicle play is outstanding. Some bugs here and there, but I don't mind them. Also, so many ways to kill your enemies, from knives to C4 to road kills. The trolls and LOLs and the 200+ hrs I put in are why BF4 is my favorite game.

Overall, DICE hit it out of the park this time. Although, I blame stupid EA for rushing the game just to compete with Ghosts. Anyway, a must buy for 2014. If you want to wait till DICE fully fixes the game, that's fine. But overall, this game is loads of fun.

Throw away that copy of COD Ghosts and get yourself a copy of BF4 today. No screaming kids guaranteed.

A fine game...
evan_dow3 August 2019
... until the game was put back in to development and butchered for some stupid reason.

I have completed the campaign I have managed 1000g all up but there is about 400g or around 600g more so I just play until I get to rank 140 online. People play this online for that experience, not the single player campaign. This game will be rather cheap by now so go out and get it it is worth the money if you can look past the choppy graphics - it didn't used to be this way.

Fingers crossed this game will eventually be re-mastered - it should be. It had smooth graphics before politics got in the way. You know what I am saying? It is just the ravaging job on the graphics as if it was an act of vandalism. It used to be so much better.

A game worth the money!
abaird62529 May 2014
I went to buy a game, and it was between this game and watch dogs. I did want to try watch dogs, but everyone was saying this game was bad. Battlefield has never brought me down, and this one didn't also. I hit quick play and the graphics blew me away. They were magnificent for a FPS game. The campaign was not so good, but what do you expect. The game is meant for multiplayer, and you can't complain about lagging or bugs because they fixed that already. The game is technically brand new! And I do say that this game is much more competitive and harder than battlefield 3, so play if you are looking for a little challenge. I was frustrated at times, but I am like that with all of my games. So what I am trying to say is get this game, try it out, and you will probably enjoy it!

Good, but not on the same level as Battlefield 3.
UnwaveringHyperion1 December 2013
I will only discuss the Multiplayer, I am not a story person. So everything about this game is pretty cool. The one thing I hate though is... the maps! They're small! Well, okay yeah, you got some big ones but those are mostly covered by buildings. Don't get me wrong, they're big, but nothing like Caspian Border or Armored shield. Even then there are a lot of bugs that make you freeze at the loading screen or in-game.

And most of the time you will get into a game where people have mics plugged in, yet are unwilling too talk. I'm sorry, what? You don't have to talk , your team will do just fine, but why give the false illusion that you're trying too cooperate.

7/10 good luck on the Battlefield my friends.

Dice has done it again! NOT!
LOL101LOL23 April 2014
I am sure I am going to upset some people that read this, but as much as I want to love this game after putting 2000+ hours on BFBC2 and really tried to like BF3, I just can't give this game the thumbs up.

Why you might ask? Well the main problem I have with this game it hangs my slim PS3 more than any game ever has, my PS3 hangs at average 2 to 3 times a hour (none of my other games do), and I am pretty sick of sending that stupid message to Playstation explaining why my $120 AUS game seems to freeze all the time, yes here in Australia we pay over $100 for new releases, and there is no way in hell I am going to pay another $75 for the extra maps/content.

Besides the hanging part, again BF4 tries way to hard to be like COD, lots of guns, tons of add ons for your weapons, even paint schemes for all your weapons, and the wham bam spawn and die type of game play.

I have lost count of how many times I have pulled the trigger at close range on an enemy, got the first shots of, for the enemy to turn around and kill me! And their health bar is 100%! It is not all bad as I gave the game a 5, to keep it sort of neutral as the maps are good, I like the large range of weapons. But every time I play I feel like I am walking on egg shells, be careful as it will freeze/hang! Dice seems to always bring out a game that could be fantastic but always seems to have problems.

If there were lemon laws for games, Dice would find them self's in court sitting next to Playstation trying to explain why their highly priced products always seem to fail! Like I said the game has good points hence the 5 out of 10 star ratings, but I am waiting for BFBC3 to come out, and hopefully put 1000's of hours into it, I have about a 100 hours into this game, and had enough of it! No HI5 for Dice! 5 out 10 stars for me.

UPDATE! You can now rent a server for cash! why? their own servers don't even work proper, I give it a 1 now based on their money grabbing ways, why add private server whilst their own server always hangs and acts like a rubber band.

Completely fixed! An excellent buy!
spam168932121 December 2013
When the game was released, as you may have heard, it was very buggy. By that i mean it would crash and lose your progress every other game. It was also plagued by small, annoying bugs. However, i can now completely say that it is fixed and would recommend it to anyone. However that doesn't mean its perfect.

campaign: I'm not gonna lie, the campaign is pretty awful. I'm only on mission 3 and it starts wit a ten minutes of finding a guy and another 20 minutes of talking. Of course, if you like playing shooters where you walk and talk and don't actually shoot things then this is for you. The reason i have not let this affect my score much and still given Battlefield 4 a 9 is simply because why would you play the campaign? If you're the sorta person that buys battlefield game then you're obviously getting it for 1 reason: The multiplayer. which brings me to my next thing...

Multiplayer: There is only one word for this: Spectacular. After getting off to a rough and bug filled start, it wasn't great. But now its been fixed its a completely different story. The maps are all great, whether your playing conquest or team deathmatch, its all brilliant. There's a large selection of vehicles and LOTS of weapons. It uses the same class system as featured in Battlefield 3, except the engineer uses PDW's instead of carbines, which are now for all classes. On top of the great maps and selections of weapons and gadgets, there's lots of assignments to complete. They're challenges with an xp reward then sometimes a gun and they add a fun element to the gameplay.

Overall its a very solid game that's well worth the money. i recommend getting it for PC(If it's powerful enough, that is!) because there are 64 player games(also on next-gen though) and i find it more enjoyable. If you're considering this or Call of Duty: Ghosts then i would definitely go for this because i own both and can say that this is a lot better of a game.

Awesome game! (with some issues) but I still loved it
jullebull27 February 2019
I had very fun with this game. I really enjoyed it and I love it. The campaign is actually not that bad. Okay it's short and sometimes it felt pointless. But it has som truly good, rushing action scenes and some storytelling. We have interesting characters with their little personalities. There are variations of locations in this game. Battlefield 4 changed atmosphear in every mission and it had different gameplay in every mission. The story was fun, and they brought back Dima which was amazing. And the ending was fricking awesome. That whole mission is my personal favorite. The music, the parachuting, the massive shootout, all the biggest characters reuiniting in an exciting climax. Then we have the final choice. The ending is epic, storytelling and emotional.

Multiplayer is the thing though. I'm not a multiplayer guy, and I haven't played that much. All I can say that it is the game. If I wanna play Battlefield online with friends I always pick this game because it's extremly climaxing to play with friends in this game.

It was perfect. PERFECT, everything. Down to the last minute detail.
johngshen7 February 2024
TLDR: The greatest FPS game of all time and worth every penny of your money. (Go cry about it BO2 fanboys)

In Depth: Pros:
  • Levolutions, amazing events that change the map in an instant
  • Great dynamic gameplay with awesome flow
  • Some of the best weapon selection and modding in FPS history
  • Consistent and kind player base (you'll always have servers)
  • Good graphics for the time, still holds up well
  • DLCs are reasonably priced and worth it
  • Weapon balancing is solid
  • No SBMM, so there's less sweaty players
Cons:
  • Campaign can be tedious and slightly boring in certain places
  • Kills aren't as satisfying as BF1 (I know, big nitpick)

Conclusion: Just buy it, you'll love it.

Very fun modern military shooter that still holds up
bobehensley19 July 2021
I think Battlefield 4 is a fantastic game! This was the first title to fully take advantage of the PS4 / Xbox One hardware at the time. It runs basically like Battlefield 3, only a bit smoother thanks to the Frostbite 3 engine. Not only does it look better than previous entries, it's the first game in the series to introduce high tick rate servers for more responsive gameplay.

BF4 Premium is one of the most feature rich packages you can get. It contains a huge variety of weapons and vehicles as well as well as over 30 varied maps, including classic maps from Battlefield 2 and 3. Even before the hype of Battlefield 2042, BF4 had a massive active player-base and it wasn't tricky to find a game to jump into. Thanks to it's community driven development, BF4 has become a favorite to many over the years.

There are some minor nit-picks. The biggest issue I have with this game is the progression system. While it's pretty easy to level up classes, individual weapons take an incredibly long time to fully level up. After 50+ hours online, I haven't even progressed a quarter way through any of my primary weapons. Even with XP boosts provided by premium, it takes a while to progress. There are hundreds of small attachments to unlock, so much to the point that each new feature feels miniscule.

The other issue I have is lack of game mode variety. The dominant game mode is conquest, which to be fair is a staple for this series. However it would have been nice to have more Rush or Capture the Flag servers. Luckily there's at least a lot of map rotation in most Conquest servers, giving players the opportunity to fight in varied infantry and vehicle settings.

Four Is Better Then Three
mrxelement4 December 2013
Story- A very short campaign that you will finish it within 4-5 hours depending how you play. The story was pretty weak and really had no exciting parts. Also quite boring too. Although the intro into the game was funny and tragic.

Multiplayer- Without a doubt one of the best Multiplayer I've ever played in a Battlefield game. The only thing that's disappointing is that you can't view 3rd person mode while in a tank, only in a quad vehicle. The weapons are excellent, maps are gorgeous, modes are great! Its very fun and engaging that you never want too quit.

The Bad News- This game is full of bugs and glitches. I've crashed about 20 times in single player mode that made me pull my hair out. Quite annoying sometimes you can't even get passed the loading screen. I suggest you stay away from it until the developers fully patch it.

Other than that, Battlefield 4 is fun fun fun!!

I had hopes for Battlefield 4
thescifisideoflife1 December 2013
Since I picked up Battlefield: Bad Company second hand a few years ago, I fell in love with it.

The audio was amazing, the visuals were fantastic and the destructible environments blew me away (as it was the first FPS i'd played with that element)

Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3 became my favourite FPS games and I was beyond excited when EA announced Battlefield 4. But, It hurts me to say that this game is garbage!.

1) I finished the campaign on its hardest setting in just under 5 hours 2) The story and gameplay were boring beyond belief 3) Enemy AI was dumb and repetitive 4) The graphics were WORSE than Battlefield 3 (on Xbox 360 anyway) 5) The ending was anti climactic

Online its just as fast paced and intense as BF3, although I did find the weapons customisation a bit confusing at the beginning. And in near enough every online session, I find myself starring at the other players frozen in one spot due to either lag or a glitch, although I am still able to run around (for about 10 seconds, then It says I was killed).

EA and DICE need to step it up a bit, the game is broken, boring and not at all as good as it could have been.

5 / 10, an average game that could have been 10x better

Arcadey But Heroic Gameplay, Impressive Character Development and Lens Flares
BrunoEsparza10 November 2023
Singleplayer Plot:

In 2020, six years after Battlefield 3, tensions between the United States and Russia are high.

Chinese Admiral Chang aims to overthrow China's government by falsely accusing the U. S. of assassinating Jin Jié, a peace advocate.

Success would align China with Russia, risking a full-scale war with the U. S. on the underdog side.

Negative Aspects:

Abundant, unalterable lens flares (from the Sun, headlights, fires, and nearly all light sources).

Sending a squad against a significantly superior force feels "arcadey," akin to games like Call of Duty or Battlefield. A notable exception exists for when Captain Roland Garrison when placed in an unwinnable situation uses his assets as guerrilla warfare, which I will not spoil here.

The protagonist, despite being the commander, remains completely silent.

Some of Irish's actions could lead to a court-martial.

Positive Aspects:

All characters (both main and secondary) are genuinely likable and experience significant character development throughout the game.

The interiors of the navy vessels are remarkably well-crafted.

The sign/countersign system offered by Molina regarding the High Schools in Brooklyn upon arrival at the Tashgar Observation Post is top-quality and realistically applied to ensure the identification of unknown personnel.

An action masterpiece, superb campaign
Hazu2915 March 2023
I rarely get emotional playing this type of games, but wow, this is one of the best FPS game I ever played. Both Battlefield 4 and 1 are amazing.

It's funny that the same studio couldn't create a decent modern battlefield, the new battlefield 2042 is unplayable, a complete joke compared to this masterpiece. Something happened with the Dice studio (probably we all know what...).

If you like FPS games, this is a must play, although the campaign story mode is not long, I finished within 6 hours, but it's not easy.

The multi-player is great, but I think battlefield 1 has the best multi-player mode and community.

Cheers.

Rushed and broken product!!
DJFrodo16 January 2014
It's been 2 months now and things just keep getting worse with each update. Don't believe me? Go check the Battlefield/Battlelog forums yourself. Hundreds, if not thousands of posts with problems and people wanting their money back.

I bought the PS3 copy and got the digital upgrade for PS4. PS3 isn't so bad with problems, but the PS4 has ton of issues. On both, people are losing their campaign save file. Yup, turn on your console the next morning and you have to start all over again! Only thing you can to prevent this is to save your save file to a USB drive. Rubberbanding/lag issues to were you walk a couple feet and stop, a couple more feet and stop. Which got worse after the Jan.14th patch, of which, was one of the things that was supposed to fixed with THAT patch. Doesn't matter if you have an awesome internet connection either. Sounds not being there when you start a map, and after the Jan.14th patch, when the building in Shanghai collapsed my sound died and got majorly choppy to where I had to shut off my PS4 to get normal sound back. And it isn't the PS4, because I also have CoD: Ghosts & Killzone and those two run PERFECT. I didn't renew my PS+ for a couple of weeks just waiting for it to be fixed, nope.

And for some insane reason they made the controls on PS3 different to PS4. R1 or L1 for fire on PS3 and R2 or L2 for fire on PS4. Really annoying when you switch from one system to the other to play with your friends that haven't got a PS4 yet. Call of Duty: Ghosts did both versions the same, why couldn't Battlefield?!? And once again, they give you a map pack with pre-orders, just like they did with Battlefield 3. Well, if you end up getting "premium", you end up paying for that map pack anyway, no discount on premium for already owning one of the map packs, weak. I had bought premium on PS4 and it said it was downloadable to PS3 as well...NOPE. Had to call up Playstation and get a refund and re-buy it on the PS3 for it to be transferable to PS4.

I was a fan of Battlefield for a long time, played: 1942, 1943, #1, #2, Bad Company 1 & 2......but after how POORLY #4 has been, I will NOT be buying Battlefield 5.

edit: a year later and STILL issues, 13 updates later and still broken! They fix a few things and break a few with each update. The most recent massive/fall update, well, now you have to jump over every damn pebble and curb, stuff that anyone should just be able to walk over. Taking 3-4 times jumps to jump over a handrail! Remember when game used to come complete & finished, maybe ONE update? Seems the gaming industry has forgotten and rushes games out now for the holidays and MONEY and with the thought that "hey, we can just fix it with updates later!". So wait on buying games, don't pre-order like sheep and hand over your money blindly, make them go back to decent standards!

DO NOT BUY THIS GARBAGE, anyone who says this is good is lying.
DustinRahksi24 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Don't even bother reading what this review says, just go straight to my list about this game, it contains all you need to know, COD GHOSTS IS MORE ENJOYABLE THAN THIS TRASHHEAP.

PS. The bf4 community is worse than the COD community ever was, take that into consideration. There are no BF glory days to be had here, move along.

Don't get me wrong, I played the sh-t out of BF throughout my life. Even though BF3 was technically bad by standards, but I played a lot of it. You see, when you try to expand upon CODS fan base, it brings in the idiots. And when you get the idiots on your team, YA DONE. The COD players pollute this franchise. But for the most time, the game was too damn easy. But the single player had some decent challenge and okay moments.

The campaign: There is two critical wrongs here. First, it's like three hours long, every thing happens too fast. You get put in prison, two minutes later you escape, you meet Dima, he's dead 20 minutes later. There is battles between the U.S., China and Russia, it gets resolved in a less than a week. There's twists, double cross's, civil war, and EMP's. And it all fly's past you faster than you can figure out what is going on. I mean, I like the plot and locations, but it feels rushed, at least BF3's story had some good pacing. It's still better than any thing COD has put out in the last 3 years. The second problem is, it is way too easy. Even on hard mode, you still just breeze through it. Give the kiddies a false sense of accomplishment I guess. I give it a 7 out of 10 stars, I enjoyed it, at least it was memorable, unlike half of the other 2013 games I bought. The soundtrack can be described as cool music that goes with causing mas destruction, it actually fits in very well with the games mood. I would have liked some instrumental versions of the songs as well, but oh well.

Multiplayer: This is where the 3.5 comes in. Maybe I haven't played enough of it yet, but the vehicles, guns, maps, and level up system are the exact same thing you have seen in BF3. Commander rarely ever makes a presence. Other than that, there is nothing new brought to the table. "Well what about counter knifing", all I do is mash the controller. I'm guessing the PS3 and 360 got BF3.5, and the PS4 got the real deal. Leveloution shines bright in Paracel storm, the whole map changes with the hurricane going on, it's a feast for the eyes. I give it a 7 out of 10.

Technical aspects: Is it just me, or does this game look worse than BF3 did. I mean, BF3 looked great when it was released, but this game just looks blah. The textures are range from beautiful down to downright atrocious. You remember what the game looked like in the trailer, yeah it looks nothing like that. The rain is this games highlight, I love the glare it makes when combined with the lighting. I guess I am just going to have to wait for the full experience when I get a PS4 in February. Another thing, this game seams to cause problems with my internet when I try to go online, sometimes I get signed out, and sometimes it tells me I can't connect to EA servers. There is a few minor problems with loading times, and strange glitches in the story mode. There are big pixelated blotches, and unloaded textures. Enemy soldiers fall through the floor so you can't kill them, and have to restart the checkpoint. One glitch, I fell down a pitfall and died, then I re-spawned all the way down where I fell, luckily it let me finish the mission.

I don't know what dices problem is with trying to copy and paste COD, and why do they refuse to make Bad company 3, was it not kiddie enough to be successful. So the game could be considered good, just nothing great. Still better than every other shooter that was released this year. I give it a 7.5 out of 10.

NOW YOU WANT A REVIEW OF MULTPLAYER, CLICK ON MY NAME AND READ THE BF4 LIST, THE COD FANBOYS WILL LOVE WHAT I HAVE TO SAY ABOUT IT. The review continues in my BF4 list, because it won't all fit in here.
