A brief preamble. This is a piece about my favourite films from the last ten years. Not the “best”. These are simply the films that I’ve enjoyed the most; the ones which have moved me the most, thrilled me the most. I’ll start with some reflections and honourable mentions, before moving onto my highly subjective list.
Outside the comic book juggernaut, franchise cinema had a shaky ride during the 2010s. But for every pointless Godzilla sequel, Universal Monsters false start, or extra nail in the Terminator coffin, there was a glimmer of gold. Sam Mendes’ Skyfall (2012) was an exceptionally intelligent and stirring James Bond instalment, and comfortably the best of a sometimes-uncomfortable franchise. And Matt Reeves’ War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) was everything I want from a blockbuster: gorgeous, smart, fun, thoughtful, and philosophically substantial.
But I think I’m with Mr Scorsese on the comic...

Horror streaming service Shudder continues to grow their collection with classic shockers and a number of fantastic exclusives. From the trippy French mini-series Beyond the Walls (which I loved) to Rob Zombie's killer clown extravoganza, 31, their offerings since coming to Canada have been borth eclectic and top-drawer. The list of exclusives continues to grow in February with two 2016 festival faves: the supernatural thriller We Go On which is the second feature from Andy Mittion and Jesse Holland, award-winning directors of YellowBrickRoad, and Joyce A. Nashawati's intense Greek apocalypse thriller, Blind Sun. Also hitting Shudder is February is ABC's of Death parts 1 & 2, the fifth and final Phantasm installment, Phantasm: Ravager, Nina Forever, zombie film Death in the Time of Heroes starring Billy Zane, and...

This has easily been the hardest time I’ve ever had whittling down my favorite genre offerings for the year. I was fortunate to watch so many great movies throughout the course of the last 12 months (over 150—new and old!), and considering the quality of projects from both the studio and independent sides of the business was exceedingly high, I probably could have featured 20 films on this list, and still would have at least a dozen more I could recommend to fellow fans. 2016 was definitely one of the best recent years in horror and that’s pretty rad.
Beyond the realm of movies, horror also had a strong showing on TV, as it seems almost every single network these days has something of interest if you’re looking to immerse yourself in horror on the small screen. I was also fortunate enough to attend several amazing genre events in 2016, making...

Seven horror screenwriters share their tips on how to write a really scary movie
It’s easy to write a horror movie, isn’t it? Pack up a couple of kids, send them off somewhere isolated, and have a monster chase them through the woods. Throw in some loud bangs on the soundtrack and you’re sorted. Right?
Wrong. Well, okay, not wrong if you want to write a basic, generic, forgettable kind of horror movie. But if you want to do something better than that, things get a bit more complicated. You need a proper story; characters worth investing in; a carefully constructed atmosphere of dread punctuated by the kind of scares that make your audience hide behind their hands. And that’s not easy.
To get the lowdown on what works and what doesn’t, I interviewed some working horror writers. Here are their tips:...

It’s been a pretty stellar year for horror so far, and not from the avenues you’d probably expect. Sure, The Conjuring 2 cemented James Wan’s status as a modern-day genre God, but plenty of other fantastic efforts have seemingly flown under the radar.
We’re talking about the little guys, who fight a (completely silly) stigma that comes along with the words “VOD release.” No longer are these non-theatrical openings a wasteland of avoid-at-all-cost titles, and furthermore, companies like A24 are giving these lesser titles the in-movie releases they deserve. This is a great time for horror – you just have to look hard enough.
If you follow my weekly film reviews, then you already know I watch a lot of horror. Like, probably an unhealthy amount (if you ask my family). But, in doing so, I’m able to offer recommendations with a much deeper knowledge, as...

Nina Forever: Relationships are complicated, and even when you think you’ve moved on past a former lover, you still carry traces of that person’s influence with you for a while. That’s the theme at the heart of Nina Forever, the darkly comedic feature film debut from Ben and Chris Blaine that follows new couple Holly (Abigail Hardingham) and Rob (Cian Barry) as they contend with the return of Nina (Fiona O’Shaughnessy), Rob’s former girlfriend who was killed during a car accident and decides to pop up during their first time having sex. And that’s only the beginning of the awkwardness that continues to build between the trio throughout Nina Forever.
What I really enjoyed about Nina Forever was the approach that the Blaine Brothers take in tackling their complicated ideas; there are no easy answers here and the way the filmmakers handle topics like obsession,...

Contending with an immobilizing sense of loss is often an isolating and painful experience for many people, particularly as they struggle to overcome the harrowing feelings of being abandoned by those they love. Whether they live in the quiet suburban countryside or in a chaotic city, people often don’t feel as though their self-imposed seclusion would be considered normal, as their emotions don’t get much attention by any part of society. Intensely missing someone who’s no longer in your life, and attempting to forever stay connected to that person you have so longingly loved, intriguingly fuels the emotions of the male protagonist, who’s played by Cian Barry, in the new [ Read More ]

Modern romance in Nina Forever
True love never dies, so they say, and this is something that has charmed romantics and worried horror writers for hundreds of years. It doesn’t deter Holly (Abigail Hardingham), who really fancies Rob (Cian Barry) and figures she can handle the fact that he’s recently bereaved. But dead girlfriend Nina (Fiona O’Shaughnessy) still wants him for herself and isn’t about to give up easily.
An incisive look at some of the less talked-about aspects of human sexuality, Nina Forever is the first full length feature made for a cinema audience by brothers Chris and Ben Blaine, and it has won them well deserved attention. Fresh off the festival circuit, they agreed to talk to us about the film, enthusiastic about a review they said have given them a real boost early on. They were just glad, Chris tells me, that “somebody got it.

★★★★★ It's as rare as rocking horse excrement for horror movies to exhibit emotional depths not related to the visceral thrills of the jump scare and the insidious, blood-chilling fright. So invested in the art of the slay and sending the audience into paroxysms of fear, the genre and its practitioners have either forgotten or disregarded the idea that it's capable of doing other stuff. Like making the audience have a good cry. The aim of Nina Forever, by débutantes Ben and Chris Blaine, is not to get the heart pumping and nerves going with ghost train jolts, but to pull at the heart strings and demonstrate that films of this nature are entirely capable of provoking our tear ducts to do impersonations of Niagara Falls.

I love a heartwarming, feel-good romance story just as much as the next person, but sometimes, it’s those doomed cinematic relationships that tend to stick with you the most. One of the more interesting ill-fated couples I recently encountered was Rob (Cian Barry) and Holly (Abigail Hardingham) from Nina Forever. The new couple must endure the looming presence of Rob’s ex-girlfriend, Nina (Fiona O’Shaughnessy), who died recently in a car accident and happens to show up anytime they become intimate.
The pitch-black comedy touches on a lot of the complications that come with modern relationships and all the proverbial baggage we endure as a result of our previous romantic entanglements. It really struck me throughout the story just how well directors Ben and Chris Blaine perfectly explore those themes in Nina Forever, making me realize that some of my very favorite movie love affairs, particularly from the 1980s,...

I had a university professor (English literature) who was fond of saying, "Nobody walks away happy from a threeway." I wonder what he would have to say about the Blaine Brothers' Nina Forever, a dark but droll relationship drama that layers on the blood and the sex. This movie, quite literally, has to change the bed sheets often. Rob is a bright young man whose future is put on hold after a vehicle accident leaves his girlfriend Nina dead, and his own psyche is scarred to the point of depression and suicide. While receiving support from Nina's parents, who were, it seems, closer to him than his own, Rob quietly toils at a low wage, low engagement, job as a cashier clerk. There he meets Holly,...

This sexy indie fairytale doesn’t overdo the ghoulishness – more Buffy than gory – as it explores the emotional and physical sides of a love affair with a difference
Every young couple thinks their initial intimate encounters are a rebellious and subversive act. For Holly (Abigail Hardingham) and Rob (Cian Barry), they actually have a strong case. When the lights dim and things get hot and heavy, the bloody, broken-boned corpse of Rob’s dead girlfriend Nina (Fiona O’Shaughnessy) emerges from the bedsheets to join them in a love triangle from beyond the grave. The punchline: Nina Forever, while it has a few laughs, is not a comedy.
Holly, a 19-year-old studying to become a paramedic, meets Rob, a bit older, at the suburban British supermarket where they work. She’s had his eye on him since she heard he tried to kill himself when Nina died in a car accident.

Read: SXSW Review: Fresh, Original, & Surprisingly Tender Horror 'Nina Forever' Valentine's Day is right around the corner, and that usually means rose-colored decorations, flowers, chocolates and the unoriginal rom-com. But "Nina Forever" isn't your ordinary rom-com. Instead of rosy hues and light, charming dialogue, "Nina Forever" plunges you into the depths of depression and horror, accenting the misery with squishy viscera and an off-kilter atmosphere. The award-winning movie stars Abigail Hardingham and Cian Barry as Holly and Rob, a burgeoning workplace couple beginning to find stability and purpose in their droll lives. Rob has recently lost his ex-girlfriend, Nina, in a tragic motorcycle accident, which leaves him as a shadow of his former self. But Holly is determined to make this new, budding relationship work and goes out of her way to help the troubled young man through his grief. But just as their relationship finds footing, Nina.

This review originally ran as part of our coverage of SXSW 2015. It is being reposted as the film opens theatrically this Friday.
In the realm of cockblocks, there’s nothing more intrusive than a vengeful ex-girlfriend who wants to sabotage every future relationship you attempt without her.
Wait, let me rephrase that. In the Realistic realm of cockblocks, that’d be the absolute worst – but Nina Forever doesn’t care to explore our human world. No, according to the Blaine brothers, the absolute Worst cockblock known to man comes in the form of your dead ex-girlfriend who only appears during passionate lovemaking sessions with other woman. This is the lustful tale of Nina Forever, a morbid fable about letting go and moving on – even if the past comes back from the grave.
Holly (Abigail Hardingham) is in love with Rob (Cian Barry), and Rob is in love with Holly. This all seems healthy and promising,...

Looking to move on he soon falls for co-worker Holly (Abigail Hardingham) who he starts a relationship with. The problem is, whenever they try to have sex, Nina is brought back to sarcastically torment their attempts to have a normal relationship.

I’ve heard 2015 described as a bad year for horror, but that hasn’t been my experience. Between seeing a bunch of movies I really enjoyed (and will continue to enjoy for years to come) and the horror I’ve enjoyed through other outlets, I’ve been a happy genre fan this year. Here are some of my highlights:
We Are Still Here: Writer/director Ted Geoghegan’s debut feature may lack some of the nuance and technical polish of some other movies on this list, but no other horror movie has stuck with me as much this year. I love the wintery atmosphere, I love the loooong the film builds, I love the way that ghosts are depicted not as spooky things that float around and slam doors but instead are angry and vicious and have the immediacy of zombies. Most of all I love the way that...

In a perfect world we’d have an annual holiday that lent itself somehow to the appreciation of horror films — just one day out of the year where people were encouraged to share their love for cinema of the scary, creepy, and gory kinds. A pipe dream, I know, so until that day comes we’ll have to settle for end of the year lists like this one to point people towards the best the genre has to offer. Great horror films that only played festivals and have secured release dates for 2016 — The Invitation, Black Mountain Side, The Witch, Nina Forever — are ineligible for this list, but I am including fest titles that have yet to be so lucky (in the hopes that some smart distributor picks them up soon for release). 15. Goodnight Mommy Twin boys suspect their mother, bandaged after a trip to the hospital, might not actually be their mother after all. This...
