Mary Jane's life, as we have seen, rarely has a dull moment. Between her work life which involves Kara and Mark, much less her show; her family, of which between her brother, niece and mother there is always something; and her love life which, at best, seems manufactured on the sole basis to not be alone, her life, in many areas, is like a sand castle needing constant maintenance.
Topic 1: Old Relationships
Let's start off with the fool known as Andre. With Mary Jane in one bed waiting, and Avery in another, much less the two knowing about each other, and neither seemingly ready, or perhaps able, to dump him, he is damn near shown as a player. But, seemingly, things are changing. For, despite Avery trying to fix their marriage Andre seems done. In his own words, between Mary Jane's spontaneity, of which her sex game is a big part, plus him sick of being touted as an investment, much less reminded where he came from, he seems ready for divorce. Thing is though, I feel like we heard this conversation before and while he may talk about divorce, I think we need to see papers, lawyers and all that before this doesn't seem like a ploy to keep Mary Jane on the hook a little longer.
But, apparently there was almost no need for that whole divorce spiel. I say this because it seems Mary Jane is growing accustomed to being the mistress and doesn't have much issue with being one, unless Andre brings up Avery. You see, Avery and Mary Jane end up at the same function, of which Mary Jane has to give a speech. Said function is for women in which mentors and mentees come to the function to, assumingly, become more united in sisterhood. However, Avery puts her adultery business out there and Mary Jane decides to respond in her speech.
Let it be known though, Mary Jane seemingly isn't the only woman in her family who is willing to wait, struggle, and cause drama to get what she wants. Helen is back to playing games to get what she wants. This time though, it isn't for attention, but because she want's Patrick's girlfriend Tracy out her house. So, she manufactures some drama based on someone stealing a bracelet of hers. Now, taking note of Tracy's past, she gets accused and Helen pretty much puts it out there how much she doesn't like her, and seemingly this creates such a wedge that Tracy and Patrick may have broken up. And considering Patrick has just relapsed, this may end up backfiring in the long run since now he has one less person in his corner keeping him away from cocaine.
Topic 2: I Believe in a Thing Called Love
Being that Kara is very much single, and the intern she is messing with she thinks may just want a green card, she is on a dating site looking for love. Now, Mary Jane has a profile on this site too, but seemingly abandoned it a long time ago. But, with Kara digging into Mary Jane's life, she decides to contact a professor named Sean (Wayne Brady) who Mary Jane seems interested in. Now, what is their long term potential? It is hard to say. For, with Andre, David, and now Sean on Mary Jane's roster, but Andre having the lead, Sean is going to have to really step up hard to make himself stand out.
Overall
Between the music and writing, Mary Jane hasn't done much wrong for me. I mean, I will remain the type of person who doesn't really like seeing adultery be used to create drama, no matter how cute the two cheaters maybe together but, outside of that, this show is definitely moving up when it comes to my favorites. Just take note of Gabrielle Union's handling of the character when she has that speech. Though it is a speech for mistresses like "Saving All My Love for You" by Whitney Houston is a song dedicated to them, damn if it wasn't written well, and performed like a boss.
I must admit though, I am beginning to wonder where this show can go long term. After all, shows like these thrive on drama, especially of the soap opera variety. And while I like what they have so far, I do feel like the show is starting to get a bit comfortable. I mean, for while I love Mary Jane's personality, her decisions are becoming predictable, as well as most of the characters on the show. Perhaps a good jolt, or new story, could help. Or maybe I have just built such a tolerance from watching so much TV that I am at the point where I feel the need to either be shocked, left with cliffhangers, or be presented with something new or, at the very least, a new perspective. And while seeing a professional woman of color isn't something seen at this level, I do feel that the show has untapped potential which is getting wasted on this Andre affair.
