When a young Viesturs Kairiss started to dream about becoming a filmmaker thirty-some-odd years ago, he knew his path wouldn’t be straightforward or easy. Before the fall of the Soviet Union, aspiring Latvian directors would have to travel to Moscow or St. Petersburg to enroll in venerable Soviet film schools. After independence, Kairiss was among the first class of graduates from the newly launched film studies program at the Latvian Academy of Culture, one of many ways in which the small Baltic republic attempted to assert its own identity after half a century of Soviet rule.
“We didn’t have any technique,” Kairiss admits of he and his film school peers, laughing. For his first feature film, “Leaving by the Way” (2001), he enlisted friends for below-the-line work and recruited actors from the local theater school. When the film bowed in the Crystal Globe competition at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival,...

Hello, everyone! It seems like there’s a constant supply of genre films coming out these days, which can make it hard to keep up with everything. Here’s a look at my thoughts on two recent indie projects, Hanna Bergholm’s Hatching and The Aviary from Jennifer Raite and Chris Cullari.
Enjoy!
The Hatching: As far as directorial debuts go, director Hanna Bergholm has done a phenomenal job of quickly establishing herself as one of the most intriguing new talents to watch in the genre space with Hatching. A harrowing exploration of the horrors and pressure that many (if not most) young folks experience throughout adolescence, screenwriter Ilja Rautsi does a great job of crafting a story that seamlessly meshes psychological horror with an unconventional creature feature, resulting in one of the most unique viewing experiences that I’ve had in 2022.

This Friday, April 29th, IFC Midnight is releasing Hanna Bergholm’s Hatching, a wildly ambitious creature feature centered around the horrors of adolescence, into theaters (it will make its debut on digital platforms on May 17th). In the film, a young girl named Tinja (Siiri Solalinna) decides to take care of a mysterious egg she finds one night, raising the twisted monstrosity in secret. Tinja’s best efforts to care for her new friend—whom she names Alli—prove to not be enough once the animal begins to wreak havoc on her life, leaving the young girl unable to contend with Alli’s increasingly dangerous behaviors.
Recently, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with Gustav Hoegen, the animatronic designer and creature FX supervisor behind Alli about his experiences working on Hatching and collaborating with Bergholm on the project. Hoegen discussed how he approached the creation of Alli, the challenges...

Company filming movie about crocodile scare in Bristol '100% sure' sighting of 6ft-long beast is unconnected to film
The makers of a new horror film about crocodiles terrorising the Somerset Levels have denied that animals used in the film were connected to a crocodile scare in central Bristol.
The chief constable of Avon and Somerset police, Nick Gargan, sparked alarm on Monday by tweeting that a 6ft-long crocodile had been spotted under a bridge in Bristol.
"One of our officers was flagged down by a bus driver today, claiming to have seen a 6ft crocodile under Coronation Bridge. We can't find it," he said.
The apparent sighting resembled a possible plot line from The Hatching – a new black comedy set in the nearby Somerset Levels that involves two crocodiles pursuing locals in an idyllic English village. It was filmed in November and December in West Pennard, which is about an hour's drive from Bristol.

Back in May we told you about a new killer croc flick called The Hatching, which at the time hadn't even begun filming. Following up on that story, we've just learned that the big green monster is inching ever closer to the surface, Stealth Media officially announcing that production on the film has wrapped.
No word yet on when it will see release, but we'll keep you posted.
Michael Anderson directed the film with Greg Davies from a screenplay by Nick Squire. Thomas Turgoose and Sylvia Syms star.
Synopsis
Tim Webber, a teenager at boarding school, and his friends Baggy and Nick take a dare to sneak out of the dormitory one night and steal crocodile eggs from a nearby zoo, but the prank ends in tragedy with Nick being killed and Tim taking all responsibility. Fifteen years later, after the death of his father, Tim returns home to Somerset...
