- The story of a girl who escapes the influence of her anti-Semitic environment and takes a stand after years of being a follower.
- Growing up with her unemployed, frustrated father and loving but unassertive mother, 17-year-old Clara completes her school internship at a retirement home. There she meets an old man, the former violin maker Elias, with whom she develops a special relationship, partly because of their shared passion for music. Clara finds in Elias a role model who motivates her. Only later does she learn that Elias is Jewish, and she begins to see the dull slogans of her father and friends in a different light. Elias also comes to trust the young girl and tells her about his pen friendship with the Jewish teacher Emmi, with whom he finally meets after many years thanks to Clara. When Emmi is later killed in an anti-Semitic attack, as was recently the case in Halle, Elias is shattered by it. Clara realizes that it is finally time to take a stand. A story about the courage to resist.—Sonja Marschall
