Not the best of them, but still good
Jackbv12330 November 2023
I've seen all the installments of Time to Come Home for Christmas and they are all at least better than average.

I would compare this one to the Time for You ... with Allison Sweeney, but even so it's quite different. In all the installments the secret is unveiled slowly. In this one it isn't as obvious that Carly is here for a reunion but pretty quick you start to see little things that tell you something is up. I figured it out very quickly, almost from the first clue.

As in all of them, there is a romance around the central character. I can't say I thought the chemistry was great between Shenae Grimes-Beech and Chris Carmack. His Matt seemed to be above it all.

In some, if not all of them, Destiny seems to be big. They all feature more than a couple of interesting coincidences.

Are you tired of the song yet? I don't recommend a bingathon of this series. The song is catchy but it gets repeated a lot. Last year they seemed to rewrite the history of the song and they keep that version this year. In the original Heath Sawyer wrote it from scratch, not the Blue Notes. Somehow this song didn't seem to be something you would expect from a church choir, but then this church was more of a family or feel good church than any particular religion.

Note: I think I am submitting this before the broadcast premiere because it has been available on the streaming service for a couple weeks now.

New-ish plot and great cast
grammajanie-288111 December 2023
This is a terrific Christmas movie and one that I would happily watch again. The 2 leads were sweet together. I love the nuances between them - casual interest, then more curiosity and a natural progression that not all of these Hallmark movies contain. The plot itself actually seems new-ish, an accomplishment in and of itself. Truly had me wondering if there'd be a romantic interest for her at first. Bravo.

The surprise within was done well and kept me guessing almost till it was revealed. Just enough cast members to make it work and they all worked well as an ensemble. The pastor was a shining light ( as he should be) with just the right touch of sincerity and kind truth and humanity.

Chris Cormack is amazingly likeable and perfect in his role and Shenae Grimes-Beech was great as well. Could we please get rid of the wigs, tho? There were times when the hair over- powered her face to the extreme - not everyone should wear bangs. Please. A stylist issue, I know, but ... very distracting for an otherwise great watch.

Could have done without the romance.

Warning: Spoilers
Yeah. I wasn't crazy about this one, although tears did come to my eyes near the end which is the ultimate measure of success for Movies and Mysteries, I guess. Mainly, everyone was just so goody-goody and I didn't like the romance. At first, I thought Shenae was going to remain footloose and fancy-free and instrumental in getting Matthew together with Jenny. Well, that took a turn. The guy seemed personality-free and somewhat of a non-entity. How oblivious can you be that you didn't notice the girl with the huge guitar case in the seat right in front of you? And then picking up a guitar pick and not sussing out that maybe it might be hers? And carrying it around for weeks? What did he do? Transfer it from change of clothes to change of clothes every day?

I do like Shanae Grimes, and she was fine in her part. But how do you get a letter from the father who abandoned you and not even open it? As far as I could tell she didn't even open it at the end, so we never know that story. And how is the church going to afford her services in the future since the pastor was paying her out of his pocket? I did like the choir part though and how she brought them together.

Hallmark takes a detour
MickyG33317 December 2023
6.7 Stars.

Let me tell you about a movie that got lost in a forest of pews It's about a woman named Carly who is alone; her mother recently passed away. Her father has been absent since she was an infant. She is a musician who plays guitar and can sing like an angel. Add to these attributes, she seems like an angel. Carly gets invited by a pastor and his wife to lead their church choir over the holidays and help them prepare for the Christmas musical.

After she arrives, things become unusual and surreal. The writers send us vague hints of a supernatural happenings, or maybe Carly is an actual angel. The peculiarities mount, but the narrative becomes confusing and loses credibility.

There is too much smoke and mirrors throughout, and it feels odd, almost like cognitive dissonance. The camouflaged unveiling of something unique and magical is lost in a clumsy setup. Carly is hired to save an untrained choir from a disastrous performance, but it seems inconsequential, because it's a very small church and nobody seems to care. The choir is a cacophony of mistimed and off key voices, well beyond the hope of reviving in a just a week. It's too cheesy watching the actor pretend to make an awful noise and you can tell they are trying very hard to make it sound as bad as possible.

The lead male, Matthew, is constantly bewildered by Jenny and Carly. Jenny (pastor's daughter) is his best friend, whom he's had a crush on for years, but his sentiment seems unnatural. Furthermore, he's indifferent and too casual. Likewise, his attitude toward Carly is befuddlement. He seems puzzled, maybe curious about her and she reacts similarly toward him. But Carly senses something invisible between Matthew and Jenny and it's not believable and doesn't fit the narrative. Why would the lead male's focus be on a supporting female, with whom he doesn't even seem attracted in the first place? This alone is taboo for Hallmark. He proceeds to unenthusiastically pursue Jenny, which degrades the emotional impact of the film even further. Eventually, he and Carly share mutual attraction, but it manifests much too late. Next, why is the pastor's wife acting so strangely when Carly arrives in town? This is an immediate clue for us to be on alert, but nothing is revealed until much later, so it loses its impact. The choir has a miraculous transformation in a matter of days, which also provides no satisfaction. Not to mention, the congregation is about fifty people and there are roughly ten in the choir. Earlier in the story there is much ado about how crucial it is for Carly to revive the choir and bring purpose, so what's presumed to be monumental is nothing more than meaningless fluff.

Why so harsh with this critique? I'm left disappointed by a shoddy production. There were many brief moments I enjoyed, but they were repeatedly smothered before gaining momentum. If it was the director's and writers' intent to redirect at every turn, they succeeded, but it's too unorthodox to make for tenable entertainment.

More Good Than Great, But Overall Decent
lisamlaucsr17 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
While this may not be the very best in the "Time For..." series, I still found it enjoyable and thought the storyline was interesting enough. Shenae Grimes portrays Carly, a young woman who takes on a short stint as a church's choir director and is tasked with getting the choir into top performance shape in time for Christmas service. Unbeknownst to her, she has ties to the pastor of the church and his wife, which they are already aware of. The actors who portray said pastor and wife did a very good job of conveying hesitancy, care and compassion all at the same time. Grimes and Chris Carmack (Matthew) have decent chemistry together, though not off the charts, but honestly, that didn't matter much to me since their relationship isn't the heart of the story.

What I enjoyed most about this movie was the musical aspect. Shenae Grimes has a very good singing voice, as does Chris Carmack, though his singing isn't featured much here. It was really nice seeing American Idol finalist Grace Leer in the role of Matthew's sister, Riley, who's new to the choir. She has a lovely voice that's featured in the end. Overall, a good effort by all and I'd recommend it.

Great movie, bad military consultants
whope-5222331 December 2023
In the first minutes of the movie the male star appears in uniform and the most visible element is the division insignia on his left shoulder. Couldn't wait for the star, Chris, to get out of uniform into his civilian clothes. It would have been so easy to get a quick consultation on simple elements like the unit insignia. The10th Mountain Division patch was turned on its side and was grating to watch. Doing a Google search for the 10th Mountain would immediately present the proper postioning of the shoulder sleeve insignia.

While walking out of doors he should have been wearing a cover until ready to board the bus. Simple elements make a big difference.

Average Holiday Story
atlasmb31 December 2023
The latest in a string of similarly titled Hallmark holiday romances produced by Blake Shelton, this one lacks the chemistry of those I have seem previously.

Shenae Grimes-Beech stars as Carly, a music teacher from Philadelphia who agrees to travel to the small town of Waterford Creek to help a church choir with its Christmas program. When she arrives, she finds that the choir is a vocal mess.

She also meets Matthew (Chris Carmack, who you may remember from "Nashville"), a returning soldier who hopes to join the local fire department. He has feelings for local girl Jenny (Lauren Jackson), but has not seen her for five years.

Carly convinces Matthew to join the choir. She connects with each choir member on an individual level. And she bonds with townspeople, in general.

In the end, this is a story about people without families, who may feel "lost", especially during holidays. It's a worthwhile subject, but this production lacks energy.

I love the small town cheer in his Hallmark holiday romance centered around a small town choir.
cgvsluis6 December 2023
The small church is adorable, the opening song " Star on Top of the Tree" by Grace Leer was beautiful and maybe my favorite new Christmas song for 2023,

Abandoned by her father at the age of one and having lost her mother this year, the orphaned Carly doesn't have anything keeping her in Philadelphia for the holidays. She accepts a two week position as choir leader for a small town church at the invitation of the pastor and his wife. Her task is to choose the songs for the Christmas program and whip the struggling choir into shape.

I really loved how the film highlights that every person has a different story. From holding on to the happy memories of a deceased wife, to holiday crazy, to a returning soldier who dreamt of home and a specific egg cream, to a timid individual pushing themselves out of their comfort zone, to a kid working hard to help his single mom.

"What's life without a little bitter."

I really appreciated the fun tradition of swapping a Christmas record like a secret santa gift. (I might have to start that with my husband.) I also loved the lesson about sharing the emotion and intent of the lyric when you sing...share your joy with those that you love. I like that they brought back door to door caroling. Spreading the joy...not keeping it to themselves.

It was fun to see Shenae Grimes-Beech (Carly) outside of the 90210 realm, I almost didn't recognize her with the bangs. She and Chris Carmack had wonderful chemistry together and were supported by a great small town cast. Beyond the usual falling in love and finding family story...my favorite part was the portrayal of a small town coming to support its individuals as depicted with the storyline of Tyler, whose single military mom pushed him to do an activity-hockey or choir...but who is working hard in all his free time to support her, his mom while going to school and singing in the choir, while his dad is away in the military.

Kathleen Duborg played a wonderfully warm and wise mother named Diane...I think Blake Shelton and his mom Dorothy Shackleford have another hit on their hands. I am not sure which one is my favorite, I would have to watch them again to determine that..I did really enjoy this year's offering.

I think fans of Hallmark holiday films are going to love this one and I recommend it.

I also loved the song that was playing while they made egg creams...I wish I knew who it was, "Christmas is my favorite time of year...keeping out of trouble till the big guy appears...".

Not the Best in the Series
vgvgnnpdm7 December 2023
Overall, OK with an interesting plot line. They attempt to honor the US Military (Army) but unfortunately in the opening scenes the Army Major has glaring uniform violations which are indicative of a poor research having been done by the "costume designer" and are, at the least, disrespectful to members of the Army. Specifically, the American Flag patch worn on the major's uniform is not the correct one and the unit patch, 10th Mountain Division, is also improperly worn as it is rotated 90 degrees and not worn with the sword points up. If you are going to portray military members in uniform, at least get the uniforms correct or you just embarrass your production and the actor(s).

Realize these discrepancies may be insignificant to most but, to those who have served it is obvious and disrespectful.

Incorrect review listed
Pac_672 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Before I state my opinion of the movie, a correction needs to be written about another review left here.

Matt and Carly are in no way related.

Matt's mom (and Matt's sister Riley's mom) in the movie is Diane. She is not the related whatsoever to Carly.

Jenny is the daughter of the pastor and his wife. She was the childhood friend that Matt had a crush on but wound up as friends.

It is revealed that Carly is the niece of the pastor's wife therefore Jenny and Carly are cousins. But again there is no family relationship between Matt and Carly. Go back and rewatch it. You'll see what I mean.

Now about the movie.... Enjoyed it. I am still not crazy about the It's Christmas song that is a reoccurring theme in these movies but overall the acting was good. Riley has a great voice. Would have enjoyed hearing it more.

One thing though.... Please watch the base makeup. There really should not be such an obvious difference between the actors' facial tone and their necks.

This is one we will watch again.

Not the best - not the worst
sijo-142085 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a Christmas movie freak and Hallmark Movies and Mysteries seem to have better quality than the Hallmark channel as of late.

Came into this with high expectations, as I'd seen another installment in the series but was slightly disappointed. The romantic leads had zero chemistry. Not really sure why every Christmas movie must have a happily ever after love story. The ending was not a huge surprise - long lost father - unexpected offer to work in a small town.

The storyline was sweet and I loved the character of George. Main character was able to turn a typical church choir into the Tabernacle choir in two weeks. All in all just ok. I've seen better but also much worse.

Disappointing
montgomerysue4 December 2023
I found this to be boring and kind of contrived. My spouse even fell asleep during it. There are some glaring plot holes here and you've seen this type of material many times in the Hallmark movies. The cast is likable and they work hard to give this story some oomph, but the script is just not that interesting. There is nothing special about the sets or the locales - it's all recycled stuff that you've seen before. Plus, as soon as the lead character says "My father left right after I was born" at the beginning of the movie, you can probably figure out how this was going to end. We did - and that was before my spouse fell asleep !
