After Lucille Ball's spunky housewife Lucy signed off on the last episode of "I Love Lucy" but before Mary Tyler Moore did away with the nuclear family sitcom model with her own self-titled show, another actress was one of the faces of womanhood in comedy. Oscar-winning actress Donna Reed headlined "The Donna Reed Show" from 1958 to 1966, playing middle-class mother and housewife Donna Stone in the popular black-and-white series. Reed starred opposite Carl Betz, who played Donna's husband, pediatrician Dr. Alex Stone. In season 5, family friends Midge and Dave joined the fun, but for the most part, the show was all about the lighthearted hijinks of the Stone family.
Though "The Donna Reed Show" was popular upon release, it's now perhaps most often referenced as a pop cultural window into a time before second-wave feminism, when women were expected to spend their time cooking, cleaning, and child-rearing while men went to work.

A New Orleans native who was raised in Tennessee, Reese Witherspoon is the very definition of good things coming in petite 5-foot-1 packages. She made her film debut at age 14 in 1991’s “The Man in the Moon,” a bittersweet Southern coming-of-age tale of first love and loss. From then on, she was pegged as a young actress to watch. She would soon gravitate towards edgier fare such as the underwhelming 1994 comedy “S.F.W.” and 1996’s “Freeway,” a rancid take on a Little Red Riding Hood on the run. She then scored a signature role as the rabidly ruthless high-school over-achiever Tracy Flick in 1999’s political satire “Election.” That was followed by her first major box-office hit, 2001’s “Legally Blonde,” as a perky Harvard student with a penchant for pink, feathered pens and cute Chihuahuas.

Sofia Vergara is taking on her most dramatic role yet in Netflix’s “Griselda,” in which she plays infamous Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco. The show marks a rare opportunity for Vergara to flex her dramatic acting muscles as her career has largely been defined by comedy projects, from playing Gloria Pritchett on ABC’s “Modern Family” (which ran for 11 seasons and garnered Vergara four Emmy nominations) to films like 2015’s “Hot Pursuit” with Reese Witherspoon.
“I’m always looking for characters because there’s not much that I can play with this stupid accent,” Vergara recently told the Los Angeles Times, poking fun at herself. “I can’t play a scientist or be in ‘Schindler’s List.’ My acting jobs are kind of limited.”
Because her potential roles are limited, Vergara knew Griselda was the rare dramatic character she could sink her teeth into. But becoming a ruthless drug lord...

Netflix has just released a teaser trailer for the period crime drama Griselda. The show is a new serious turn for Sofía Vergara. Vergara is usually known for comedies in which she plays glamorous characters, such as Modern Family, Hot Pursuit with Reese Witherspoon, Chasing Papi, and Chef. Lately, you can catch the comedic actress as one of the voices in the Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx dog comedy Strays. This new Netflix show features Vergara as a drug cartel kingpin, or rather queenpin. Not only is it a serious turn for Vergara, but she also showcases her ruthlessness as Griselda. The series comes from creators Eric Newman & Doug Miro & Ingrid Escajeda & Carlo Bernard.
The official synopsis from Netflix reads,
“Griselda is inspired by the life of the savvy and ambitious Griselda Blanco, who created one of the most profitable cartels in history. In 1970s-80s Miami, Blanco’s lethal...

'90s kids have waited a long, long time for this one, but the time is finally upon us! "Hocus Pocus 2" is nearly here and we even have a first look at the long-awaited sequel to prove it. The original movie was released nearly 30 years ago and, curiously, was released smack dab in the middle of summer by Disney, despite being a clear Halloween season film. That did it precisely no favors and it bombed at the box office. But "Hocus Pocus found new life on home video and cable, making it a generational favorite. Because of that, the Sanderson Sisters are back to terrorize Salem once more.

Anastasia Brown, a veteran music supervisor who has long been a key figure in connecting Nashville with Hollywood, has been appointed chief content strategist of Visionary Media Group. She’ll direct content across platforms for the company’s music, TV, film and scoring projects.
The move comes at a time when Nashville is making good on its longtime promise as a major hub for film and television music, as full-scale scoring stages open up to rival the spaces in Los Angeles — on top of the traditional studios that have always been plentiful in Music City — and even gaming projects look to Nashville for their soundtracks.
“Creatives move to Nashville because of our sense of community, level of talent and respect for their talents,” Brown tells Variety. “A multi-media company will financially benefit content creators, which will then allow them to thrive here for years to come. I have always cared...

When Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins’ “Booksmart” landed on the Black List of best-liked unproduced scripts back in 2009, it promised a tantalizing twist on the high school comedy: “Two overachieving high school seniors realize the only thing they haven’t accomplished is having boyfriends, and each resolves to find one by prom.” Despite the heat of a Black List endorsement, the screenplay languished, eventually getting a 2014 rewrite from filmmaker Susanna Fogel (best known for her appropriately female friendship-powered films “Life Partners” and “The Spy Who Dumped Me”). And then… nada, not for whole years.
But you can’t keep a good idea down.

Saban Films has acquired North American rights to “Bottom of the 9th,” an upcoming drama that stars Joe Manganiello and Sofía Vergara. It marks the joint acting debut for the real-life couple.
“Bottom of the 9th” is the story of a man who returns to the Bronx following a 17-year stint in prison for a violent mistake he made as a young man. His imprisonment deprived him of a professional baseball career, and ruined his relationship with the love of his life. The film is slated for a theatrical bow on July 19.
“Bottom of the 9th” is from director, screenwriter, author and musician Raymond De Felitta, the filmmaker behind “City Island” and “Madoff.” The film was written by Robert Bruzio and was formerly titled “Stano.” Manganiello is best-known for his work in “True Blood” and “Magic Mike.” Vergara stars in “Modern Family” and previously appeared in “Hot Pursuit” and “Chef.

Nearly a decade after “The Proposal” made over $160M at the domestic box office — the Sandra Bullock- and Ryan Reynolds-starring charmer still ranks as the seventh highest-grossing rom-com of all-time — director Anne Fletcher is going the route of so many successful filmmakers before her: she’s stopped relying on studio gigs to carry her career. Between her new Netflix feature, “Dumplin’,” and a burgeoning television career, Fletcher has stayed nimble as ever, emblematic of an industry that so often forces its creators to evolve quickly.
After the monstrous success of “The Proposal,” the kind of box office juggernaut that made so many portend that the studio rom-com wasn’t dead after all, Fletcher helmed two more studio offerings (Paramount’s “The Guilt Trip” and Warner Bros.’ “Hot Pursuit”). Neither film enjoyed the success of their predecessor, and the same could be said of the rom-com, which did not...

Jennifer Aniston is getting on her high heels, hair spray and best dress in her new film, paired with Danielle Macdonald, the breakout star of the Sundance darling “Patti Cake$,” in a new Netflix original movie, “Dumplin.'”
Netflix dropped the first look at the comedy/musical trailer on Wednesday. In the film, Aniston plays a former Southern beauty queen in Texas whose plus-size daughter (Macdonald) decides to compete in a pageant judged by her as an act of protest.
“I’m not the Joan of Arc of fat girls,” Macdonald’s character Willowdean says after she motivates some her fellow plus-size companions to sign up for the pageant.

August 2017 saw the worst grosses for the eighth month of the year in twenty years and the writing was on the wall very early with the disappointing debut of The Dark Tower to begin the month. While this weekend's crop of new releases didn't exactly light the box office on fire, with Disney's Christopher Robin debuting below expectations, the weekend's top twelve titles still finished 15% ahead of the the same weekend last year and featured a strong carryover weekend from Paramount's Mission: Impossible - Fallout. With an estimated $35 million, Mission: Impossible - Fallout finished atop the weekend box office for a second weekend in a row as the film's domestic cume now stands just shy of $125 million after ten days in release. The film's 42.8% second weekend drop is the second best sophomore effort in the franchise behind Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, which isn't quite an apples-to-apples comparison...

With July coming to a close, the Summer 2018 movie season begins to wind down, yet Disney's Christopher Robin hopes to keep the summer season alive for just a bit longer. The new release from the Mouse House will battle Paramount's Mission: Impossible - Fallout for the weekend's number one slot while Lionsgate's The Spy Who Dumped Me looks for a spot in the top three and early signals suggest Fox's The Darkest Minds may need to scratch and claw for a spot in the top ten. While we're expecting a close race, as of now we anticipate Mission: Impossible - Fallout will hang on for a second weekend atop the weekend box office, dropping around 47% for a $32 million sophomore session. In fact, this forecast feels slightly conservative considering the film has continued to outperform Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation throughout the week and that film dipped...

Good cover songs tell you a lot, not just about the person taking on the tunes but the original artist who created them.

It's about performers taking on the music that has touched their souls, affected the way they craft their own songs or inspired them to pursue musical careers when most would say that's a crazy thing to do. It's honoring those who've come before you.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Precious, fatuous, Nancy Meyers–lite rom-com about a privileged rich white lady with no real problems who can’t help but mom her much-younger new boyfriend. Barf. I’m “biast” (pro): love Reese Witherspoon
I’m “biast” (con): not usually a fan of romantic comedies
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Alice Kinney spends the morning of her 40th birthday crying in the bathroom. Of course she does! That’s what women do… and Alice (Reese Witherspoon: Sing, Hot Pursuit) has so much to be sad about. She lives in a big beautiful house in sunny Los Angeles, which once belonged to her now-deceased film-director father, who was super-genius and enormously popular and won Oscars and everything. She doesn’t have to work — see: wealthy dead dad — but she’s embarking on the latest in her long line of rich-white-girl...

The godfather of balletic bloodshed is back to his pre-Hollywood best with this Japan-set action thriller about a lawyer on the run from his shady former boss
With a flurry of bullets, fists and fluttering white doves, John Woo offers a better yesterday: it’s a raucously enjoyable return to the action-thriller style of his pre-Hollywood years, a cheerfully cartoony ass-kicking bromance between tough cop and falsely accused murder suspect in the manner of his classics like The Killer. There are parkour-style action sequences in crowded streets, snipers whose gun barrels emerge from billboard hoardings, cheesy emotional freeze-frames on expressive faces, a jazzy-melancholy sax theme, a scene in the subway which involves actually running on the tracks ahead of the train, and an old-fashioned jet-ski chase down a city river.
The film is based on the Japanese pulp novel Hot Pursuit by Juko Nishimura, and particularly its cult 1976 movie adaptation...

With the worst August in twenty years and worst summer in over ten years now behind us, this weekend will turn up the heat as Fall 2017 gets underway. Debuting in over 4,100 theaters, Warner Bros. and New Line's adaptation of Stephen King's It is looking to break more than just a few records while Open Road's Home Again starring Reese Witherspoon will quietly target a much smaller audience as a counter-programming option. Before it even hits theaters, WB and New Line's It has already broken records as its 4,103 theaters is the largest opening for an R-rated film ever, topping the 4,071 theaters Logan opened in earlier this year. Obviously, that also makes it the largest opening for an R-rated horror movie, improving on the 3,761 theaters Alien: Covenant debuted in earlier this year when it opened with $36 million. This, of course, begs the question So how much is it going to open with?...

Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon has another comedy coming up. The last two comedies she starred in, Hot Pursuit and This Means War, weren’t embraced as warmly as Sweet Home Alabama or Legally Blonde, but her next film, Home Again, which is Hallie Meyers-Shyer‘s directorial debut, looks more grounded than her last two comedies. Below, watch the Home Again trailer. Over the last few years, Witherspoon […]

Jennifer Aniston has located her next project – and it’s moving at a brisk clip.
First reported by Deadline, the actress has signed on for Dumplin’, a music-driven comedy said to be similar in tone to that of Pitch Perfect and Bring It On. Anne Fletcher (Hot Pursuit, 27 Dresses, The Proposal) is behind the lens, directing a script from Kristin Hahn. Aniston, meanwhile has reportedly landed the role of Rosie, a former beauty pageant queen who now runs the local Texas pageant.
Despite initially finding a home at Disney, Dumplin’ has now uprooted for the indie route, with Deadline noting that Michael Costigan’s (Ghost In the Shell) Cota Films is attached to produce. Any other project would have struggled to gain a sense of momentum, but now that Aniston has climbed aboard, it’s understood Fletcher and Co. are eyeing a summer shoot ahead of a theatrical release in...
