Kylie was the Villain, prove me wrong
ajd-3125624 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I've watched a few of these this Christmas season and I was very excited to see Hallmark's first Lesbian iteration of its classic rom-com formula. Given that it's hallmark my expectations were on the floor, and I was pleasantly surprised by this movie as it featured something we rarely see in hallmark movies: character development.

The main conflict of the story is that the two main characters are set up by their overbearing parents who (kind of funnily) want them both to just find someone already. Being sympathetic to each others situation they decide to "fake" being together in order to relieve some of that pressure for the holiday season, and in a surprise twist nobody saw coming, actually kind of fall for each other.

The movie develops this by placing the characters in (somewhat) realistic situations where their feelings and pasts are tested, such as when Kylie (the villain) name-drops the blonde character's ex-girlfriend and awkwardly shoehorns in that she moved to WeHo which causes her to pass on a karaoke night because she was feeling a bit overwhelmed from that. Idk, there were lots of small moments like this that made the movie feel like it had some actual meat to the characters here versus the usual one-wordedness of the vast majority of them. It's something you do not usually see in most of these movies.

The two main characters had a little chemistry that didn't actually fel forced between them, which was a nice surprise!

I also need to mention that Kylie, the poet, visual artist, (& more) is the source of like 90% of the movie's conflict for basically no reason. She's the reason for the disaster Karaoke scene, she's the reason behind the giant teddy bear pickup, and she at the end of the movie just blabs that Humberly's character is going to be travelling to Japan (something she ABSOLUTELY was never told) to the blonde main character which obviously causes a rift and deprives them of having an actual discussion. I never expected to see a villain in a hallmark movie, but it was a funny surprise that they seem to have created this accidental one.

Overall, one of the more watchable movies of the season featuring some actual characters versus cardboard-cutout stereotypes. More like this hallmark, please.

Parental Babysitting
cocobuttr72-311-5354224 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
As soon as Hallmark released the ultra-cute poster for Friends and Family Christmas, I was dying to see it. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a disjointed dud with scenes of one female always running to work and the other babysitting the former's parents.

Their one-on-one moments, albeit brief are gold and I wanted more of that not just thirty seconds here and there before they run-off in opposite directions.

I'm sort of bummed they didn't give us the Hallmark princess moment of Dani walking down the stairs all gussied up, and Amelia turns and and she's speechless. No. They meet on the stairs as Amelia turns around from talking with a co-worker😐.

In all honesty, I'm unsure how they started liking one another. They're rarely together. They don't decorate the tree they buy. They don't make holiday crafts despite Dani dragging Amelia to these events. Instead, Amelia is doing all of this with Dani's parents, while she's running around like a chicken with her head cut off.

I took off stars because I fell asleep twice and finally made it through the third attempt.

Bland Force Trauma
rich-4941 January 2024
This is one of worst Hallmark movies ever. If anyone involved in this production had enthusiasm for it, it must have been the caterer, because it sure was not the actors, director, or the writer. (Note to Hallmark: during a writers' strike hire scabs to cross the picket line that have graduated from kindergarten.) I understand that Hallmark movies follow a prescribed formula, but that does not mean that the script has to wallow in the ruts and seldom come up for air. If most of the characters were portrayed any more woodenly, their noses would grow when they lie. I think I heard the director's snores behind the monotones of hackneyed dialog. If you want to feel like you have wasted six hours, watch this hour and half home movie.

All the feels
kfstgermain18 December 2023
I very rarely watch Hallmark movies, but I've had this one on my radar ever since it was announced and I'm so glad the premiere date finally arrived! We love a fake dating trope, we love cheesy Christmas content and, most importantly, we love lesbians <3

This film was so cute and fun. I thought the leads had great chemistry (and they were played by two out queer actresses, yay!) and the supporting cast was great as well. No spoilers but the twist toward the very end was sweet and managed to tie the whole film together :)

I can already see myself rewatching this every year around Christmastime!

Feel Good Holiday Rom Com
detars18 December 2023
Friends & Family Christmas is everything you want in a cheesy Hallmark Christmas movie. It has found family, fake dating, falling in love, and a touch of drama. It showcases friendship, ambition, and different family dynamics while being a love story at heart. Sure it follows the classic Hallmark Rom Com formula, but that's why we watch these shows. Isn't it? We want to see cheesy, happy love stories. We want to feel all warm and cozy inside as we watch two people fall in love. So if you're needing something light and heartwarming this holiday season, I highly recommend Friends & Family Christmas.

Interesting

Warning: Spoilers
I was looking forward to seeing this mainly because of the gay female main characters.

Either the editing was off or the story was off.

There really didn't seem like enough interaction between the two for a love story to happen. It kind of jumped from one thing to the next.

I enjoyed the parts that actually had them talking to each other about their life. Getting to know each other, but there were few. The actresses did wonderful in their roles. But the whole scenario just seemed off to me. I have watched it a few times, well watched certain parts. The ones where they talk and connect. I hope in the future maybe check to make sure it kinda makes sense.

Not my lesbian movie!
MyMovieTVRomance9 January 2024
Now watching the last 37 minutes or so of this film, because the first time I tried to watch it, I didn't finish it - not a reflection on the film, just on my poor time management. Man, do I hate not finishing movies in one sitting! Kind of spoils the experience. But what makes it even worse is not finishing a movie at all. So here I go!

UPDATE: Well, I liked it less as it went on. It's just a little too saccharine and ordinary for me. The leading ladies were chief among my complaints, because I just didn't care for them. I like my stars to be a little more mature or sophisticated- or wholesome and playful in an old-fashioned, Lucille Ball kind of way. Or even British, if they couldn't be mature and sophisticated in action, at least they would be in voice then. And that's the thing - I just didn't like their voices either! It just made me long to see Carol again, and Carol is pretty boring (I say that as someone who is a fan of Carol overall), but at least it's visually appealing and the leads are very sophisticated and elegant - especially compared to this.

Another complaint I have is I didn't care for the music used in the movie. And a movie without a good score or soundtrack is a movie that won't make much of a positive impression on me. As a result, I can't necessarily say this is a bad movie. But if you like more class and sophistication in your films, if you like something a little more elegant, then this is going to strike you as painfully dull and very corny.

Ok, fine, I guess I like Hallmark movies now...
cdcalbreath18 December 2023
So, I watched this mostly because I heard there was a queer storyline and the clips I saw on youtube seemed super cute. I didn't realize how Grinchy I'd been feeling until this movie got me excited about Christmas. Actors were great across the board! The leads pulled me right in and kept me engaged, but honestly the whole ensemble was a delight. The story felt fun and Hallmark without veering too far out of plausibility for me to get pulled out of the experience. Also! Normally I hate "grand gestures" but this one worked for me. Excited to see more work from everybody involved in this project!

Sweet sapphic holiday romance
fairymyth18 December 2023
I'm very happy to see solid sapphic representation from Hallmark! In general, this positive, normalized, lighthearted depiction of romance between two women is refreshing and heartwarming. The plot, however, is not anything revolutionary. I don't think it needs to be though! It's a sweet and joyous Hallmark movie staple that gets me feeling cozy for the holiday season. Moreover, the romance has its naturally awkward moments that make it feel realistic and relatable like not knowing how to start a conversation on the first meeting and not knowing how to bid goodnight. The parents' support and constant presence is entertaining as well. A lovely community for the holiday cheer.

Finally a Hallmark Movie Represents Me!
elisabethahart19 December 2023
I've been watching Hallmark movies for over a decade and I'm so excited that they're telling lesbian stories now! I was waiting for this one all year. My two favorite things are combined <3

This movie is super cute, love the fake dating trope, and there's a sweet love story all throughout. Loved the costumes so much and the script was fantastic! The two actresses are adorable, they had great chemistry.

I will definitely be rewatching this one each christmas along with The Holiday Sitter, Hallmark's gay christmas movie. I'm so proud of the evolution of this network, it's so wonderful to see this representation!

A familiar fórmula with heart
reginadt-901-82807518 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I have probably watched about 200 hallmark movies? Honestly have lost count I love them so much. Christmas ones are some of my fav in the genre but they tend to be formulaic as we know so basically I watch all these films knowing everything and after a while they tend to merge together. This one definitely won't and no it's not only because it's one of the few with LGBQT+ representation but because the story is not your usual (city not town) neither of the characters give up their dreams for each other but rather chose to move forward together and the families are supportive but also no one is adding pressure on the characters to be anything but what they are. Love love! Also that final sequence in the park.

I love it!
mamalimaria19 December 2023
Christmas is considered by many to be the best time of the year. Love is in the air and we feel that anything can happen with love, support and hope.

So, I love Christmas movies and now ''Friends and Family Christmas'' has been added to my list of favourites. It is a sweet, upbeat film.

The leads, Ali Liebert and Humberly Gonzalez, are adorable and have great chemistry. I quite like that the parents are well written and have several scenes. I was also surprised by the script, I found it very engaging. In short, the movie is lovely and I recommend it!

Merry Christmas to you and your families!!!

Much better then expected
abagnowska19 December 2023
This movie is everything that you would expect from a Hallmark movie and more because it is, I believe, a first Hallmark movie with two queer woman in a lead. If you are looking for a cozy and heartwarming queer Christmas movie to watch during the holidays, then you will for sure enjoy the Friends and Family Christmas.

The movie delivers on its promise of a feel-good romance that will make you smile. The actors are likable and have good chemistry, the scenery is beautiful, and the message is uplifting.

Friends and Family Christmas is a perfect movie for fans of Hallmark who want to escape into a world of magical Christmas and love.

Ali Liebert is soooo cute.
Racingphan219 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Did I say that Ali Liebert is cute? No matter who her character is romantically pursuing, she is an absolute sweetheart. And best of all, here her character is after another woman. And should I say, a much younger woman!

Usually though, Ms. Liebert portrays a woman filled with much more lufe and whimsy. Maybe because she is an executive producer on this movie, she thought she had to be more reserved. C'mon Ali, let it loose!

Okay so now this website says that I have to add over a hundred more characters to pad out this review. How about that Taylor Swift? I don't care much for her, but don't mind if you do.

Finally one for us!
maamilfs23 December 2023
I'm always looking for cute lesbian christmas movies, and this one hits the spot! It has all the traits of a cheesy Hallmark movie, but with two women (with lgbt friends) and no coming out plot? We love to see it. Both their families are so supportive of them and the conflict is truly about the relationship and not each person's identity. Ali and Humberly do a fantastic job and I think you could really tell that Ali, a queer woman herself, was an executive producer because the movie was done so well. It's important to have LGBT people behind the scenes too! Props to her for doing both 😁 Anyways, I want to watch it again soon. Happy Holidays!

Ok, no Christmas movie deserves 10 stars
creidsimons24 December 2023
It's not great cinema, because that's not what Christmas movies are about. But it's as solid and enjoyable as television Christmas romances get. The leads are both fun to watch and their chemistry is great. The fact that they are gay is not a plot point - no confusion or coming out of the closet angst - it's just treated as a matter of fact like their hair color or height. It's refreshing to see. And in what I like to think is an homage to "Carol" a pair of gloves is a major plot point. (Not a spoiler, I promise. Just, what is it with lesbians and losing their gloves?) Bottom line, if you want a lighthearted Christmas movie that's not the same old cable holiday movie you've seen a hundred times, give this a shot.
