The best-selling Nintendo console of all time isn’t a home console like the Wii or Switch, but the Nintendo DS. Nintendo’s handheld consoles make up a vital part of its history, providing the video game industry with a number of technical innovations, introducing their own beloved video game properties, and helping keep Nintendo alive and relevant during periods when its home consoles were floundering against their competitors.
Simply put, the Nintendo we know today wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for the Game Boy and its successors over the subsequent decades. With 2024 marking the 35th anniversary of the Game Boy, here is a look back at the creation of the Game Boy, how its seismic impact fits into the wider legacy of Nintendo overall, and the importance of Nintendo’s handheld console line in the video game industry.

While promoting the new Garfield animated pic, Chris Pratt briefly touched on his past performance as the princess-saving Brooklyn plumber, Mario.
Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, the 2023 animated Super Mario Bros. Movie was an unexpected blockbuster, as it went on to set the record for biggest global opening for an animated movie.
After everything was said and done, the movie made $1.362 billion globally on a meager $100 million production budget. That feat made The Super Mario Bros. Movie the most financially successful film of 2023, according to Deadline Hollywood.
A sequel was officially announced on March 10, 2024, as part of Mario Day celebrations and given an April 3, 2026 release date.
Speaking to Total Film, Pratt teased, "I can't tell you much but I can say that there is another Mario movie coming. It gets me very excited thinking about the world of Mario and Nintendo in general, I think over the next decade...

Wes Ball’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is finally in theatres, and the film has been welcomed to positive reviews from both fans and critics. Many complimented it for its stunning visual effects and added that while it may not be the best film in the franchise, it is still a worthy addition to it. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes saw Owen Teague in the lead role of Noa, a young chimpanzee.

This post contains spoilers for "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes."
The majority of people currently alive today have never known a world without the "Planet of the Apes" franchise. French author Pierre Boulle first published his novel "La Planète des singes" in 1963, and the world has been fascinated with an alternate future where our own hubris have destroyed humans, and highly intelligent apes are now the dominant species on Earth. "Maze Runner" and future "The Legend of Zelda" director Wes Ball is the latest to sit in the director's chair, delivering "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," the tenth film overall in this legacy series.
The film follows the events of the previous trilogy a few hundred years later, where a young ape named Noa (Owen Teague) sets off on a journey after his clan has been attacked by a rival group under the control of the...

A new Nintendo Switch video game console is in the horizon… but don’t expect any news in the next few months.
Nintendo reported quarterly earnings on Tuesday, and in conjunction with that news, the company released a statement from its president Shuntaro Furukawa addressing rumors that a new Switch could debut at this summer’s Nintendo Direct event.
“We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015,” Furukawa said. “We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.”
The Switch is Nintendo’s flagship device, letting users play both on their TVs and on the go.

A big-screen adaptation of The Legend of Zelda is on the way. Nintendo is working with Sony Pictures Entertainment on the new Zelda project, following the $1 billion success of Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie adaptation.
Sony will distribute the live-action flick, which will be helmed by Wes Ball, the man behind the Maze Runner trilogy. But did you know that way back in 2010, a tweet from the director showed off his amiable disposition when he admitted to not even harboring the hope that he’d spearhead the direction of a project as epic as The Legend of Zelda?

Even those only vaguely familiar with video games probably know names like Super Mario, Grand Theft Auto, and Call of Duty. They’re the franchises that have come to dominate gaming over the last 50 years or so. Some of those franchises are currently being updated almost every year, while the new releases in others have become milestone events that seem to reshape the industry. New franchises come along and others fade away, but the biggest and best video game franchises have been slowly growing for years and, in some cases, decades.
Honestly, it can all be a little difficult to keep up with. For as significant as gaming’s biggest franchises are, they’re also…well, big. Over a long enough period of time, it’s easy to forget when specific games in certain franchises were released and where exactly they fit into the history of those series. You may know the names,...

“We’re gonna make something great”: Legend of Zelda Movie Gets a Mother of All Updates from Director
Without a doubt, The Legend of Zelda video game franchise is one of the most popular and oldest action-adventure game franchises in the gaming industry. In recent years, we’ve seen various video game franchises getting live-action adaptations in the form of movies or TV shows. The Legend of Zelda will get a similar treatment as director Wes Ball is currently working on a live-action film based on the franchise.

Last year, it was reported that Nintendo was developing a live-action Legend of Zelda film with Sony Pictures, and shortly after that Ball was revealed to be attached to the project.
The expectations are quite high, particularly because one of the video game series’ original creators, Shigeru Miyamoto, will oversee the project as one of the producers. Ball recently gave fans an update on the movie, leaving the fandom wild.

John Cena is one of the most respected and adored figures in Hollywood. He has made a name for himself through various pursuits, being successful as both an actor and a wrestler. He has become iconic in many ways and entered the fabric of popular culture. His acting roles have gained him a completely different type of audience, playing the role of The Peacemaker in the DC Universe, acting in Barbie, being a part of Argylle, and even adorning the skin of Dominic Toretto in the Fast and Furious series.
John Cena in The Peacemaker
Despite all these roles, he gets to star in an adaptation of a game. A recent update may change this as the actor might be getting a role in a highly anticipated adaptation of an iconic video game.

Since its release 35 years ago today, River City Ransom has enjoyed a remarkable cultural turnaround. Today, it is typically described as one of the best Nes games ever and a turning point in the evolution of the beat-em-up genre.
For much of its existence, though, River City Ransom was often simply considered a cult classic. It was always a strange little game that not everyone immediately gelled with. Many critics and fans throughout the years have expressed mixed feelings towards the title. Others have been far more negative. Then again, the more mixed receptions to the game over the years really shouldn’t be too surprising.
At the time of its release (and for some time afterward) there was nothing quite like River City Ransom. At a glance, it looked just like Double-Dragon: the beat-em-up title that most obviously influenced River City Ransom’s development. Once you started playing the game,...

Robin Williams will always be remembered as one of the most prolific actors that Hollywood has ever seen. He was a one-of-a-kind performer, who stood apart with his performances, establishing himself as a comedy legend. Throughout his career, the actor has done a plethora of iconic films such as Aladdin, Good Will Hunting, Dead Poets Society, and many more.

The world remembered Williams as an outstanding performer, doing stand-up comedy, films, and TV shows. However, the Popeye actor would consider himself a gamer at heart as he was addicted to gaming, and he was a huge Cod and Counter-Strike fan. The actor would spend hours in front of the screen, as he not only found gaming to be relaxing but also quite deflating as he got humbled by an 11-year-old.

Hidetaka Miyazaki is a very well-known figure in gaming right now. He is particularly famous for directing the insanely popular Soulslike series Dark Souls. He also directed Bloodborne, which was a PlayStation 4 exclusive horror soulslike, and Sekiro, which was more of a stealth action game than a soulslike. The best part about Hidetaka Miyazaki’s games is that they are never easy to play.
Pretty much every game that he has worked on over time has been very challenging. In fact, their recently released game, titled Elden Ring, was also pretty hard, albeit more inviting to new gamers. As he develops such a high number of hard games, one can’t help but wonder what game he loves playing the most, and the answer is pretty surprising indeed.

The history of gaming is often charted by citing milestone releases. We love them, you love them, and we’ve all talked about them. However, the cultural prevalence of those games means that they sometimes dominate the conversation in a way that leads to other games being lost in the shuffle. Not just lesser releases, mind you, but games that changed the industry in many ways.
Today, we’re going to look at a few of those games. While we sadly won’t be able to discuss all the games that deserve to be talked about in relation to this particular subject, we hope that shining a light on a few of these titles will reveal entirely new ways to look at the evolution of gaming.
Colossal Cave Adventure (1976/1977)
At the very least, Colossal Cave Adventure has to be considered the first adventure game. However, even that statement sells its accomplishments short.

Few genres are as synonymous with innovation as role-playing games. Many early RPGs were among the most ambitious gaming experiences of their era. Since then, the best RPG studios have aspired to raise the bar by producing increasingly advanced experiences. That expectation for innovations resulted in advancements that often benefited every other part of the medium.
It’s not easy to shine a proper light on all the RPGs that changed gaming forever (and for the better) no matter how much room you give yourself. Yet, these 20 RPGs do an admirable job of telling the story of one of gaming’s most important genres.
Before we get into that, though, please just note that this article is limited to video game RPGs. That means that obviously influential tabletop RPGs are only mentioned in passing.

To celebrate Mario Day, which was March 10th (get it? Mar10?), Shigeru Miyamoto, the character’s creator, and Illumination head Chris Meledandri, officially announced another film set in that universe, with an April 3rd, 2026 release date. But, with a Super Mario Bros Movie 2 finally happening, what other Nintendo properties might be getting a movie?
Closer to the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie last year notorious scooper Daniel Richtman, who has a solid track record for sharing information that often pans out, said Nintendo and Illumination were working on various titles. Nintendo and Illumination are collaborating on Super Mario Bros 2, a follow-up to 2023’s huge hit animated movie.
Although reviews for last year’s The Super Mario Bros Movie were decidedly mixed, audiences turned up for the film in droves.
The Illumination Entertainment film, made in partnership with Nintendo, would prove to be hugely popular with audiences on its way to grossing $1.3bn at the global box office. That impressive haul meant the film would ultimately become the second highest grossing film of the year, with only Barbie earning more throughout the year.
In the wake of the film’s success, nobody was surprised when Nintendo announced that an adaptation of The Legend Of Zelda – its beloved and long-running fantasy series – was in the works. Rather than go for another animated feature however, The Legend Of Zelda is set to be live action and will be directed by Wes Ball, the...

Illumination and Nintendo will join forces to produce a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.
The companies previously partnered on last year’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which grossed more than $1.3 billion and became the second highest-grossing movie of 2023. It’s unclear which fanciful characters the new film will focus on — be they plumbers, princesses, Koopas or other residents of the Mushroom Kingdom — and the partners are not using the word “sequel.” However, the companies did specify that the movie will be released in theaters on April 3, 2026, in the U.S. and additional markets globally. It will be unveiled in other territories throughout April.
The film will be produced by Chris Meledandri, founder and CEO of Illumination, and Shigeru Miyamoto, representative director and fellow of Nintendo and one of the most famous figures in gaming. The close collaboration between the filmmakers and Miyamoto is...

‘Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes’ embarks on a daring journey nearly 300 years after Caesar’s time. This isn’t just a sequel; it’s the dawn of a new trilogy in the Apes universe. Directed by Wes Ball, the film introduces us to an era where Caesar’s legacy has become a distant echo.
Central to this new story is Noa, a young ape hero portrayed by Owen Teague. Unlike the expected follow-up focusing on Caesar’s son, Noa’s narrative is unique. He’s a character unaware of Caesar’s past. ‘Noa has no idea who that is,’ Teague reveals, highlighting a journey of discovery and understanding about what Caesar’s legacy truly means.

The blockbuster post-apocalyptic video game Death Stranding is being adapted into a live-action film by A24, with the help of its creator Hideo Kojima.
According to the official synopsis, the movie will “delve into the mysteries surrounding the apocalyptic event called the ‘Death Stranding,’ which blurred the lines between life and death, and brought forth nightmarish creatures into a world on the brink of collapse.”
In a statement, the esteemed video game designer explained why he chose to work with the production company. “A24 was born into this world about 10 years ago, their presence is singular within the industry, they are like no other,” he said. “The films they are delivering to the world are high in quality and very innovative. I have been attracted to their creations and they have even inspired my own work. Their innovative approach to storytelling aligns with what Kojima Productions has been doing for the last 8 years.

If you want a hint regarding the Legend Of Zelda film’s angle, think less Lord Of The Rings and more Spirited Away says director Wes Ball.
Ever since The Super Mario Bros Movie hit big earlier this year, it felt like a matter of time until Nintendo followed up with the announcement of a film version of what is probably its second-largest property: The Legend Of Zelda.
Rumours swirled, coy statements were made, but eventually, the inevitable happened and the project was announced.
However, what might have been surprising to some was the news that The Legend Of Zelda would be a live-action project, unlike the animated take on Mario and Luigi. Wes Ball, director of next year’s Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, is attached to make the film, and has popped up to offer a brief take on the direction we can expect his Zelda film to aim for.

As soon as news hit in November that Nintendo and Sony Pictures were joining forces for a live-action movie based on the The Legend of Zelda video games, many fans started to predict the the studios had the next “Lord of the Rings” on their hands. Not so fast. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the film’s director Wes Ball said he’s long envisioned a Zelda movie not as a “Rings”-like epic but as a live-action Hayao Miyazaki movie.
Ball said his vision for the live-action Zelda movie is “this awesome fantasy-adventure movie that isn’t like ‘Lord of the Rings,’ it’s its own thing. I’ve always said, I would love to see a live-action Miyazaki. That wonder and whimsy that he brings to things, I would love to see something like that.”
“It’s going to be awesome,” Ball continued. “My whole life has led up to this moment.

Nintendo saw the millions upon millions that "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" brought in and decided to ... do something completely different and bet on big risks and in Avi Arad. The game studio and Sony Pictures Entertainment announced last month that Wes Ball will direct a live-action feature film adaptation of "The Legend of Zelda" video game series. That's right. A live-action film, not an animated one.
Wes Ball is a surprising choice, to be sure, but a welcome one. As our own Jacob Hall wrote, the upcoming adaptation "isn't guaranteed to be a great movie, but it's taken a big and important first step by hiring a young, promising, exciting filmmaker with a giant well of talent and a lot to prove. The quest begins."
Nothing makes it clearer that Wes Ball at least has the right inspirations than a recent interview he did with Entertainment Weekly where he...

Since the official word broke that Nintendo is pursuing a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, my head has been spinning with possibilities of what the film will look like. Hyrule is undoubtedly one of the most lush, intricate, and enigmatic kingdoms under Nintendo’s imaginative umbrella. When Maze Runner director Wes Ball approaches Link and Zelda’s world, he must pull out all the stops. Thankfully, it sounds like Ball is off to a great start. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Ball said he wants The Legend of Zelda to feel like a live-action Miyazaki film, which is music to my ears. Hayao Miyazaki is the legend who co-founded Studio Ghibli and is often called the “Godfather of Anime.” Imagine Link, Zelda, and Ganon inhabiting a world as fantasy-driven as Miyazaki’s My Neighbor Totoro or Howl’s Moving Castle. The possibilities are endless.

Originally released way back in 1996 and marking Mario’s final appearance on the Snes, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, developed by Square, became the blueprint for the Mario franchise’s sporadic forays into the world of RPGs. The Switch remake is, in essence, the same game with new visuals and a re-recorded soundtrack. Outside of a new combat meter that adds in a party-based ultimate attack, Super Mario RPG remains mostly unchanged in terms of gameplay. Luckily, this doesn’t much matter for a game as quick, funny, and consistently engaging as this one.
Much of Super Mario RPG’s creative spark, as well as a great deal of its many fantastic jokes, comes from the tension between its simplistic Mario roots and Square’s more layered storytelling approach, namely across its storied Final Fantasy franchise. Released for the Nintendo 64 in 1998, Ocarina of Time did more than bring The Legend of Zelda into a literal new dimension. It was a full realization of what a more immersive Legend of Zelda title could be while leaning into darker tones and subject matter than its predecessors. However, Ocarina of Time’s enormous success proved to become something of a double-edged sword creatively for the franchise moving forward. It redefined The Legend of Zelda for both the fans and subsequent creative teams somewhat restrictively.
Here’s how Ocarina of Time elevated the Legend of Zelda franchise to new heights, how it influenced the franchise for over a decade, and how Zelda eventually found a way to finally, and successfully, work its out from under the shadow of the 1998 game and effectively redefine itself once again to renewed popularity and relevance.
