Just as entertaining as the first movie...
paul_haakonsen15 April 2014
If you enjoyed the first "Bad Ass" movie, then you will definitely like "Bad Asses" as well, because it is just as entertaining and out there as the first movie was.

The storyline is much similar to the first movie, sure. Frank Vega (played by Danny Trejo) is now trying to live a fairly quiet life after his semi-famous attention he got in the first movie. Living in a quiet neighborhood, he frequently visits the nextdoor liquor store run by Bernie Pope (played by Danny Glover). Frank is training local youths in the boxing center, when Manny (played by Jeremy Ray Valdez) gets killed because of drugs. Teaming up with Bernie after he saved Frank's life, the two men set out to find out to clean out the dirty seed in the community.

Actually the storyline was good, despite it being corny and full of clichés. But there was just something fundamentally entertaining about it. And the movie really flourished because of the talents that were in the movie. Both Danny Trejo and Danny Glover were excellent cast for their particular roles. But I will say that Andrew Divoff really was well cast for the role as Leandro Herrera, and he played the character well.

There is a good amount of action in the movie, and despite being up well in their ages, both Danny Trejo and Danny Glover do show that they still got it. And Danny Glover did bring a comedy relief to the movie, that actually worked out quite alright.

So, for those who enjoyed the first "Bad Ass" movie, you don't want to miss out on this one.

An Enjoyable Low Budget Action Comedy
nebk8 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I thought I would watch this given the fact that I've seen the first one which even though was not great was at least watchable. The sequel in my opinion is better than the first one.

Danny Trejo as Frank Vega & Danny Glover as Bernie Pope are an entertaining couple of grumpy hard-cases who take it upon themselves to avenge Vega's boxing Protégé who got involved with drug dealers and was murdered as a result. The movie is basically about them finding out who was responsible.

The good points about the movie are that Trejo and Glover work well on screen. Sure, it's not equal to great buddy cop comedy action movies like Lethal Weapon, but given the story and budget it's still entertaining. There are humorous situations, like the two riding a bus in pursuit of justice, or taking a taxi to trail the main criminal whilst wearing what can only be described as ridiculous outfits (fanny packs included). Danny Glover''s character hitting on a college student about 50 years younger than him was funny as well.

The bad points are that the movie is predictable, implausible, and has a lot of plot holes which distract from the story. At times there are even contradictions, like Vega telling a bunch of kids that drugs are for losers and then bribing a security guard with a bag of weed. The effects of the explosion in the movie are pretty bad too. The ending feels rushed and has a fairy tale ending feel to it. The fact that this is also predictable takes the movie down a notch.

Overall though I would give it a generous 6/10 as it's not the worst way to spend 90 minutes if you don't have anything better to do. Just don't expect your brain to be engaged in the experience at all.

See? Glovers never too old for this sh........
FlashCallahan4 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
If you are reading the review, then you are aware that the film is called Bad Ass 2: Bad Assess, so you know that narrative, story, script, and comprehension are not the film makers main focus.

They know they have got Danny Glover as an agoraphobic, grumpy old man, and people of an age will just have Lethal Weapon flash before their eyes and go for it. Much like me.

Story wise, if you've seen any action film from the eighties, you will know, even before he opens his mouth, that the kid is going to get killed, and be the rationale for Trejo to do his death wish again.

It's not the best film in the world, but it's sincere in trying to hark back to the buddy action comedies of the eighties.

Glover is brilliant, and the scene where they gate crash the party is hilarious, and the ending has a great payoff to that film.

When a film really dwells on a scene involving a little girl wanting a secret room, you absolutely know that room will be used to effect come the end of the film.

It's ninety minutes if switch your brain off rubbish.

It's nothing brilliant, but you could do a heck of a lot worse.

If you liked the first movie...
Wizard-815 July 2014
I enjoyed the original "Bad Ass" movie, so I looked forward to this sequel when I heard about its release. I had to search for it in several video stores in my city, but I eventually found it. Was it worth the wait? Overall, I would say yes. The sequel has the good idea of giving the lead character an equally old and grumpy partner, and the two Dannys (Trejo and Glover) playing the leads manage to generate some great chemistry. It also helps that their characters have been written to be very likable not just together, but apart. The movie has generally good production values and moves from scene to scene fairly quickly, so there are no boring parts. Don't get me wrong, this movie is not perfect. The movie cheapens out at one point by extensively using footage from the 1990 movie "Narrow Margin". Also, the movie's mix of yuk-yuk comedy with hard violence does give the movie an inconsistent (and weird) feeling at times. Fortunately, there's more good stuff than disappointing material here. So if you liked the first movie, chances are you'll like this sequel.

Hard to pigeon hole.
thekarmicnomad17 May 2014
I am at a loss to place this film, I'm not even sure if I enjoyed it or not, or if I could recommend it.

This is an action film with a ridiculous plot where some old guys have to go and beat up some other guys; but that really isn't important.

This isn't a 'serious' action movie like Die Hard or Transporter but it isn't a full send up like Black Dynamite or Gravy Train.

The production is strange. Normally when someone throws a grenade you get a slow motion sequence of the grenade in flight, followed by a close up of the villains face, then a few seconds of explosion. Here grenade leaves hand the next frame is bad guy blowing up.

There is lots of action, the fight scenes are fast and furious but aren't particularly well choreographed. Glover and Trejo deliver their cheesy lines and punch people adequately enough.

Don't take this too serious and you may enjoy. I did... I think.

As bad ass as the original bad ass.
bbickley13-921-5866412 January 2015
As if we needed more bad ass than the great Danny Trejo attempting to create a new cult franchise to complement his major motion picture franchise, Machete, they give us another well know bad ass in the legendary Danny Glover.

I have to admit, Glover is cool and all, but it has been a long time since the Lethal Weapon franchise and his performance in the movie reflects it. He seems to play more old man than bad ass. What he does bring in full effect is total humor as the real bad ass's side kick, a role he always done well, and this is no exception.

Wacth Trejo kick some ass, get the girl, and save the day,and watch Glover make you laugh. Totally worth the time.

It's okay
lzickefoose25 January 2016
I watched this with my husband. He laughed more than I.

I am a fan of Danny Glover and Danny Trejo, but this movie did both the actors and the viewers a disservice.

Implausible plot. Poor continuity. If you're enjoying the evening with a few cold ones, it's okay.

Darker and more bloody than I would have thought. I did not enjoy watching Glover trying to engage in a sexual relation shop with younger women.

Some of the fight scenes were entertaining.

I hope they do not make a sequel. If they do and it's good, well... I don;t see that happening.

Alright by me.
coljam214 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Entertaining and funny. I love that the director did not try to portray those two as indestructible strapping action heroes. It starts with Trejo drinking a glass full of prune juice first thing in the morning along with a fist full of pills. He and Glover team up to rid their neighborhood of the drug king pin that killed Trejo's boxing protégé.

The movie was action packed but the action was in proportion to the age of the actors. It was also comical. At one point in the movie Glover sent a text to the police so they could rendezvous and ambush the drug dealers. The police showed up after the dealers were apprehended and the police officer said "Sorry At&t. I didn't get your text message until 10 minutes after you sent it." LOL! I was like woah! Which one of the carriers paid for that insult? Hilarious and shocking. In all it was a light hearted and funny movie and not to be taken too seriously.

More of the same - with extra Danny Glover
Leofwine_draca26 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
BAD ASSES is the sequel to the first low budget Danny Trejo movie, a smaller budgeted but in some ways more charming film than MACHETE. This time around Trejo is back, once more working as a vigilante against a sinister criminal organisation headlined by the more than welcome Andrew Divoff, of WISHMASTER fame. The good news is that this time around Danny Glover's along for the ride; he's extensively doubled in any of the action scenes, but still funny in the comedy. It's a low rent and familiar film, nothing particularly special about it, a pleasant time waster if you like the stars.

An Old White Guy Will Complete the Trio
LeonLouisRicci14 May 2014
This Sequel to the also DTV Bad Ass (2011) is More Entertaining and Funny than it has Any Right to be. The Humor here works Better than the Mega Million Dollar The Expendables (2010) & 2 (2012) and that is just Incomprehensible.

But here it is and this Time Our Espanic Geriatric Kick Asser (Danny Trejo) is Teamed Up with Another Social Security-ian, African American Danny Glover. It is with Some Charm that They go about Their Business of Taking Out the Trash.

Things Might get Overstated a Bit in the Sexual Allure Department Once Again as Both are Given Much Younger and Attractive Females to Bed and Although this is Probably Made for Light Hearted Yuks, it comes across as just Yucky.

The Rest of the Movie Delivers Good One Liners and Bloody Violence in the B-Movie Tradition and in this Aging Baby Boomer Society there is Likely to be a Bevy of these Graybeards Refusing to Retire Gracefully as long as there are Villains About.

Still moving
kosmasp9 September 2014
Danny Glover might say he's too old for that ... as much as he wants. Fact of the matter is he's still kicking it (or them). In this case he's helping a friend out ... and who wouldn't want to be friends with Danny Trejo? Or any character he portrays of course! Seriously though: If you have seen part one (not necessary for this one, even though it "continues" the story), you will know if this is a movie you will be able to enjoy or not.

The added Glover flavor does not elevate the movie too much, though it's always fun hearing the two main actors going at each other. Still there quite a few flaws and you'll be aware that both of them are not really able to do what their characters are supposed to do ... but maybe you won't even care and just enjoy a movie that is like a blast from the past.

Great Action Comedy
livimak20 April 2014
I enjoyed the first one but really didn't know what to expect with the second one... but sure enough it delivered and it delivered hard. One of the better action comedies I've seen in a long time. Good story, well choreographed action scenes and solid cast but most of all this movie had heart. Trejo and Glover are hilarious together. What I love best is that this movie doesn't take itself seriously as it takes a page out of some of the great '80's action comedies complete with tongue in cheek one liners. Loved that they cast Jonathan Lipnicki ("Jerry Maguire") and the addition of Loni Love takes the comedy to a whole other level. Was very excited to hear that they're making a third installment of the film with third Bad Ass John Amos. "Expendables" got nothing on this movie.

NEXT TIME I'LL BRING A DESSERT
nogodnomasters14 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Boxing instructor and prune juice junkie Frank (Danny Trejo) teams up with high sticking curmudgeon Bernie (Danny Glover) to avenge the death of a young drug dealing boxer. The plot is predictable. The film is filled with cliches and corny humor poking fun at old men.

This is a fun comedy/action film. Where else are you going to see Trejo playing Barbies?

Parental Guide: F-bomb. No sex or nudity. Sarah Dumont bra/panties and double majors.

What a corny, awful and dreadful mindless movie this was.
peterp-450-2987166 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
"I'd rather you stick a needle in my eye than insult me"

My God, this was a terribly bad movie. Regardless of whether you are to assume that this is really nothing more than a bad B-action movie and you definitely shouldn't take this too seriously, I think it is a monstrosity of a movie. Terrible acting (even Danny Glover's acting was dreadful), bad fight scenes , incredibly old SE's and such mindless humor that even a laugh track wouldn't work . However, what can be expected from someone who has films directed with titles such as "Saving Ryan's Privates", "The 41 -Year- Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall and Felt Superbad About It" and "30 Nights of Paranormal Activity with the Devil Inside the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". I have a feeling that Craig Moss used more energy and creativity on devising this film titles than in creating it. The involvement of Danny Trejo in here is also an indication that this won't be a exalted movie. When you look at his filmography, however, you can only have respect for the man. Is there actually a movie he hasn't played in? There are 18 movies in post -production with him at this time. Amazing !

I haven't seen "Bad Ass" myself (and I probably won't anyway). The only reason I wanted to watch this one is the fact that Danny Glover starred in it. It seemed like an attempt to make a follow up of "Lethal Weapon". The things that made "Lethal Weapon" so unique and entertaining, was missing here . . No flashy action, no humor and no infectious interaction between the two protagonists. I suppose that the beginning was an excerpt from "Bad Ass" where we witness how Frank Vega (Danny Trejo) teaches a duo of skinheads a lesson. Apparently this is enough to make him a local hero and even a honorary member of the police. Vega has a gym and the emerging star Manny has a not so healthy job on the side, namely trading drugs. One evening he's killed by the head of the drug gang. Vega is determined with the help of Bernie (Danny Glover), after Manny's mother begging, to take revenge on this gang for the death of his pupil who he treated as his own son .

The script is as predictable as it can get. You know where it's going and how it will end. If they have deliberately created this film as a humorous pulp action movie then I would understand. But I fear that it was meant to be a serious movie. The commitment of a veteran to give a group of problem children a future and a vision. But unfortunately it became an unlikely story. The most funny thing in this film were the farts of Glover.

Now some things that really annoyed me. Danny Glover , an old man who shambles around all day with a phobia so he's afraid to leave his shop and who also has liver disease, suddenly jumps to the rescue and swings around with a hockey stick as if he's a reborn Bruce Lee. I am convinced that if you get an ice pick shoved in your eye, you won't be walking around moments later in a good mood with just an eye patch. The chance that you can throw a hand grenade from a speeding jeep in a flying helicopter after which the latter blows up( with an incredibly ugly looking explosion) is minuscule. And as always, the gang members armed with automatic rifles still stand there frightfully waving those guns around while the police drive up with the sirens blaring. They stand there with such an air like "Ok, I see that they are coming, but I persist on being tough". And the incredibly delicious looking mother of Manny, falls for Vega . Incomprehensible ! I had a vision of 70's television serials like "The A-Team" when watching this movie. So terribly old-fashioned. Just that this 70's-80's serials looked far better than this movie.

Disappointing
p-jonsson18 January 2015
The original Bad Ass was not really a bad movie. Not great but enjoyable. So I thought it would be worthwhile to watch the second one as well. Danny Trejo and Danny Glover certainly sounded like it could be a fun combination. Unfortunately this movie was a bit of a disappointment.

The movie felt tired a lot of the time. Danny Trejo was not bad but Danny Glover never really felt like a bad ass and his fart jokes was definitely more bad taste than bad ass.

The story was fairly whimsical and unintelligent. Some things were just poorly done. Like for instance Frank blowing up a chopper by throwing a hand grenade at it from a car. It was so poorly done that I just sat there thinking what the f…? And then on the end where they kill (of course) the main bad guy and Bernie claims that there he got his liver and that they should put the guy on ice. It actually looks like whoever wrote that crap actually believed in it as well since the final scenes implies that Bernie got his liver transplant. What kind of an idiot writes something like that. Heard about transplant compatibility requirements? Oh, and that nonsense with the ice-pick. If you get an icepick showed all the way into your head through your eye you most likely die. You do not walk around the next day with nothing but an eye patch.

Then we have this diplomatic immunity crap. It really doesn't work that simple. You might get away with a few speeding tickets but you cannot go on a crime spree and expect not to be expelled at least. That stuff might have been okay in Lethal Weapon but now it is really just dumb.

On the whole I have to say that I was rather disappointed with this movie. The first one was better and that one was enjoyable but not great to begin with. There are some fun moments, some decent fighting and so on so it is not a total turkey but disappointing nonetheless.

Great movie. Great mix with Danny Trejo and Danny Glover. Very funny movie. Good to see Danny Trejo in comedy. Danny Glover still has it as a great actor. Both together is an excellent mix. Thought the first movie was good. The second even better. Will be watching the third part soon. So good to see Trejo play a role other that a killer. He is a good comedian along with Glover

Frank Vega versus LA drug criminals.
suite921 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The Three Acts:

The initial tableaux: We open in Frank Vega's apartment. In the sequel he still has his dog, he still is old, but now he has the notoriety from the first film, plus he's an honorary policeman. Frank's flat connects to a boxing gym that he operates. The other side of the gym connects to a bodega that Bernie operates. Frank and Bernie have traded insults for the last three years. Manny has been a bit of a protégé of Frank's, and gives him a smartphone with a heartfelt message as a gift.

Delineation of conflicts: Adolfo has a beef with Manny, and has his goons kill him. Manny seemed to have no idea what the beef was before he died. Frank would like more answers about Manny's passing, as would Rosaria.

After Frank stops an armed robbery against Bernie's place, Officer Malark tells Frank that Manny's body was found with drugs on it of substantial street value. The trail starts for Frank when he questions Tuscon, one of Manny's friends at the gym. Frank gives the drug pushers a bruising, and destroys a load of drugs. At first, it seems like Frank has dealt with the folks who killed Manny, but of course there is more to it than that.

Frank wants answers, Bernie wants answers, Manny's family wants answers. The perpetrators would prefer silence. This includes Adolfo and his father Leandro, who has the money and position in upper LA society to make things difficult for Frank and Bernie.

Resolution: Frank makes some progress using his fists, but needs more than just direct force.

this could be good stuff for 5th to 7th graders
ramdi15 April 2014
unfortunately, the makers went for R with too much nudity, vulgar language and gobs of violence the kinds of b/c movie fights, with the old Karate/ Kongfu stuff showing on screens that the bad guys are watching. sorry. that's crass. So, if you liked the first one, you'll probably like this one. If you stumbled on this one by mistake, know you're in for some real bad car chase shots that look totally fake to a 12 year old and a thin story that leaves much deserved. Sorry to rain on your parade. While I am sure both Dannys had fun with the others making this movie, I had very little fun sitting through. Suspension of disbelief level required : 9/10. Beyond me.

Not too shabby, Danny Glover is a nice addition
Seth_Rogue_One6 August 2016
Not spectacular in any ways but if you like liked the first one then I don't see why you shouldn't at least enjoy this one.

Plotwise I guess it's nothing that's gonna win any awards, fairly similar to the first one but I really enjoy Danny Trejo as Frank Vega.

Usually Trejo gets to play only one-dimensional angry all the time bad asses but Frank Vega has a little more layers to him, of course he's still bad ass but he does have a more sensitive side to him as well as being rather funny from time to time.

And Danny Glover is a nice addition to the franchise, even though there are limitations to what he can do in terms of bad assness his character is funny.

Dante Basco is listed in the credits, but honestly I didn't see him, and I imagine I would have recognized him if I did... But he's listed as 'gangly Asian guy' so maybe he was in the background in some scene. Or his scene were cut out for some reason. Just thought I'd point that out.

Anyways yeah if you liked the first one give it a go, have not seen the third one yet but is looking forward to doing so when possible.

Not the best action comedy
deloudelouvain20 March 2017
I think Danny Trejo shouldn't go for major roles but just stick to some minor appearances. He's just not a great actor, at least not good enough to play leading roles. He fits better in small parts where he has to play the villain. Badd Ass 2 isn't great, with a weak story, one of those stories you saw a lot before and way better. Danny Glover should call it quits by now. In this movie it looks all forced and his past natural comedy talent isn't the same in Bad Ass 2. I saw they made a third one but I honestly think I'm going to pass on that one. I can get that some people like those kind of movie but it's not for me. Story too weak and actors not on top.

It doesn't get much better than these grumpy old men. Watch out trouble here they come.
face-819-9337268 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
You might not remember a little movie from the summer of 2012 called Bad Ass, but think back just a bit, and it will come to you. Danny Trejo was on the bus minding his own business after another long day slinging hot dogs on the street when these hoods started making trouble, and thought that he was just another old guy they could push around. You remember now, they were very wrong, and this all led to our BA taking on the gangs, and bringing justice to the streets. Well here we are in 2014, and just a few weeks ago I can remember thinking "I wonder what Danny Glover is up to?" then this nice little surprise drops into my lap. The action hero who was "gettin to old for this" 30 years ago is back to provide just the right level of support both physically, and comically. This is a decent movie that has been filmed well, and is built on a great foundation however fantastical it may be. I can recommend this to anyone, and feel good doing so. You have the fantastic new team up of Trejo, and Glover who are so good at being old, then just as good at swinging with the best of them a moment later. You have a decent story that is family friendly(if you have a pretty tough family), a bit of language and though there is killing it is not done in a flashy gory way, there is a lot of good hearted humour in there too, so give this piece a chance.

More of the same, but funnier
bensonmum222 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
If you saw Danny Trejo play Frank Vega in the first Bad Ass, then you probably know what to expect from Bad Ass 2: Bad Asses. While I don't think it's quite as good overall, this one is funnier. Trejo is joined by Danny Glover. Together, they make a mean, geriatric, fighting machine. Just the sight of these two guys together is enough to bring a smile to my face - Trejo in his now familiar blue t-shirt, cameo jacket, khaki shorts, and white tennis shoes and socks with Glover wearing a yellow t-shirt, green Adidas track suite, white tennis shoes, and rainbow headband. And they play off each other nicely, constantly making fun of the other's age and medical conditions. A plus for Bad Ass 2 is Andrew Divoff as chief baddie Leandro Herrera. Divoff always plays a fantastic heavy. Yeah, fight choreography is a bit weak, special effects are pretty bad, and there are moments that defy belief (a grenade nonchalantly thrown from a car into a helicopter), but it's all done in with a sense of humor.

In this one, Vega is helping young men get off the streets by teaching them to box. One of his prize boxers, however, gets mixed up with some drug dealers and gets himself killed. With the help of his reluctant friend, Bernie, Vega sets out to avenge the young man's death and clean up the streets.

I realize Bad Ass 2 isn't a "good" movie by most people's standards. But if you don't take it too seriously, it's not half bad.

Didn't Mr. Glover State He Was Too Old For This In 1987?
boblipton6 March 2024
When the boxer he is training is killed, 70-year-old Danny Trejo teams up with 68-year-old Danny Glover to take down an international drug cartel run by a diplomat.

I took a look at this because I enjoyed the first movie. However I will not be looking at the third movie in the series any time soon. It is one of those movies in which old guys limp along until it becomes necessary for them to do something like, oh, dodge two men with blazing automatic weapons, whereupon they do a jump and roll. Or their stunt doubles do. The cat is eked out with eight-year-old Melany Ochoa, who is missing her front teeth, and various other actors who were, no doubt, glad for the paycheck.

While I understand that Trejo is not going to star in KING LEAR -- unless that ancient Briton is going to kick the butts of his daughters' husbands -- I have grown weary of septuagenarian action stars. Can we give it a rest?
