Following its MGM purchase, Amazon chief executive Andy Jassy anticipates a continued ramp-up of investment in entertainment as Prime Video content proves highly successful in spurring signups of Amazon Prime.
The biggest investment so far is its recently closed 8.45 billion acquisition of the studio behind James Bond and Rocky. “I think it’s still pretty early days for us in entertainment. We’ve invested a lot of money there and a lot of resources there, and I think you should expect we will continue to do so. We are very optimistic about what’s possible,” Jassy said on CNBC.
He was circumspect when asked about today’s business bombshell, Elon Musk’s hostile bid for Twitter. “I don’t know. I woke up and heard the news. It’s interesting. We all use Twitter obviously to some degree. It will be interesting to see how it evolves.” Asked if Amazon...

Sonar Entertainment has optioned Tim Dorsey's Serge Storms novels to be developed into a TV series titled "Florida Roadkill". Evan Endicott and Josh Stoddard ("Betas," "The Shannara Chronicles") will pen the adaptation and executive produce.
The darkly comic crime drama follows a charismatic criminal named Serge Storms who suffers a range of mental illnesses that render him compulsive, paranoid and frequently homicidal.
A strong sense of justice and rigid moral compass make him an antidote to Tampa, Florida's ethically-challenged crooks, miscreants and coked-up kingpins.

With the 2014-2015 television season winding down, many television fans and channels are looking ahead to the new series that will make their debut over the next television season. Fox is no different, having announced their renewals, cancellations, and new series pickups over the last week, and the network has now released trailers for a number of their new series.
First up is the trailer for the new animated series Bordertown.
From Family Guy’s Mark Hentemann comes Bordertown, a new animated comedy about two families living in a Southwest desert town on the U.S. – Mexico border. The series takes a satirical look at the cultural shifts occurring in America, where the U.S. Census forecasts that by 2017, ethnic minorities will become the majority. Set against this increasingly diverse backdrop, the comedy explores family, politics and everything in between with a cross-cultural wink. Bordertown centers on two clans: the Buckwalds and the Gonzalezes.

“Simon Rich has delivered a wholly original, hilarious and fantastical view of single life that features an incredible performance from Jay Baruchel,” said Grad. “We feel this is the perfect fit for Fxx and are thrilled to pick up the show.”
According to FX, Man Seeking Woman is “a sweet and absurd look at the surreal life-and-death stakes of dating, and centers on Josh Greenberg (Baruchel), a naive romantic on a desperate quest for love.” Along with Baruchel, the series will co-star Eric André (The Eric André Show,...

The upcoming foray into scripted development by technology companies such as Microsoft and Yahoo could mean increased opportunity for new talent. Established performers such as Kevin Spacey, who stars on Netflix’s “House of Cards,” and John Goodman, who anchors the cast of Amazon Studios’ “Alpha House,” have so far dominated the attention paid to the casts on the new-platform series. But some young performers have been able to further their careers from their turns on, say, “Betas.” Karan Soni, for instance, has gone on to book other television and film roles despite the Amazon series being canceled after one season. “I think the new scripted series on platforms like the Sony PlayStation, Xbox, Yahoo, Hulu, and Amazon are a great way for newcomers, as well as established talent, to gain exposure,” said Alyssa Weisberg, who cast “Betas” and consulted on other Amazon projects. “All of these platforms have great content in development and production.

Tiya Sircar has been cast as one of the leads in CBS’ How I Met Your Mother spinoff How I Met Your Dad, replacing Krysta Rodriguez. In the vein of the original series, Himyd tells the story from a female point of view, that of Sally (Greta Gerwig), and revolves around a new group of friends in New York. Sircar will play Juliet, Sally’s sexy and flamboyant best friend. The recasting, done after the pilot’s table read, was accompanied by some tweaking of the character, including giving Juliet a new workplace. Sircar, repped by TalentWorks and Elevate Entertainment, was on CBS and 20th TV’s radar as she just wrapped an arc on the network and the studio’s freshman comedy series The Crazy Ones, playing Sarah Michelle Gellar’s assistant and Hamish Linklater’s love interest. She also had a lead role in last summer’s feature comedy The Internship,...

Exclusive: A&E Network has put in development a high-concept drama from Immortals writers Charley & Vlas Parlapanides and producer Michael London. The project’s title, The 36, stems from the mystical Jewish concept of the Righteous 36, which stipulates that at all times there are 36 people in the world possessing special powers who don’t necessarily know each other but if even one of them was missing, the world would come to an end. A version of the premise was recently used on the Fox supernatural drama Touch where such 36 people were hunted by a shady organization. The 36 is set in the world of the biblical fallen angels. These dark angels, or Nephilim, live among us and are only kept in check by The Righteous 36. Set in New York, The 36 centers on Dane, a complicated hero who soon learns that he’s right in the middle of this battle for the soul of mankind.

The unconventional development process pioneered by Amazon Studios extends to the deals it offers actors, according to casting director Alyssa Weisberg. The streaming service doesn’t offer holding deals to its performers the way TV networks have traditionally done with actors that network executives think could work in a variety of projects. But Weisberg, who cast Amazon’s new comedy series “Betas” and has consulted for the company on other projects, said that enhances the casting process. “That is one of the things that is nice about Amazon at the moment, is that we don’t have to put actors in holding deals into roles that they might not be right for,” she told Backstage. In October, Amazon gave the greenlight to three pilots: “Mozart in the Jungle,” which was written by Roman Coppola, Jason Schwartzman, and Alex Timbers; “The Outlaws,” by screenwriters Jeremy Garelick and Jon Weinbach; and “Transparent,...

TV's been attempting to mine the tech boom for material, with several series about the industry's past and present having cropped up in development recently. E! considered for one of its first scripted venture the Kevin Spacey-produced "Upstarts," which would take a look at the "digital gold rush" of the late '90s, while Bravo went the reality route with the since-canceled "Start-Ups: Silicon Valley." HBO has ordered a Silicon Valley-set comedy from Mike Judge comedy to series, and AMC's upcoming "Halt & Catch Fire" is set in the '80s in Texas' Silicon Prairie. But "Betas," the second original series from Amazon slated to go live with its first three episodes this Friday, is the first of this bunch out of the gate, a Bay Area-set comedy from newcomers Evan Endicott and Josh Stoddard about a group of guys and their lone female Smurfette who are trying to...

Now that there are so many subscription-based streaming services, it’s understandable if they’ve all blended together and you can longer tell the difference between Netflix, Hulu and whatever else is out there. However, Amazon is looking to shake things up a bit by offering an experience that’s a little different from how Netflix does things, yet should be familiar to anyone who has ever committed to watching a TV series (that number should include everyone). On top of this new approach, Amazon announced when it would be releasing its first two original series, Alpha House and Betas, to the masses for semi-immediate consumption.
