Exclusive: Amid the darkness of covering the coronavirus pandemic on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy this season, there have been bright moments, many of them tied to the return of beloved former cast members.
Following Patrick Dempsey, who has been recurring this season, and T.R. Knight, who appeared in an episode last fall, Sarah Drew also will check back into Grey Sloan this season, Deadline can reveal.
She will reprise her fan-favorite character of Dr. April Kepner in an upcoming episode.
And more Grey’s alums might be on their way back, appearing in the dream beach sequences. As Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernoff teased this week, “chances are good you’ll see other people on the beach.”
Drew left Grey’s at the end of Season 14 in 2018 after nine seasons, eight of them as a series regular. She started as a recurring in Season 6 before getting promoted to a regular the following season.

A couple of things have caught our eye in February’s Netflix UK line-up, first, the German dystopian sci-fi Tribes of Europa. After the success of sci-fi series Dark, the streaming service invested in a bunch of new German-language series, including the mega-successful historical Barbarians. Tribes was among them, and tells the story of a group of siblings in 2074, separated after a global disaster that leaves Europe riven by warring factions. Also sounding like a good time is South Korean comedy Space Sweepers, about a spaceship crew tasked with cleaning up intergalactic trash.

The multi-cam sitcom based on the stand up comedy and memoir of Patricia “Ms. Pat” Williams has landed a series order at BET Plus, Variety has learned exclusively.
The series was originally set up at Hulu last year with a pilot order. Now, BET Plus has given it a 10-episode order.
Williams stars as a fictionalized version of herself, a former convicted felon turned suburban mom whose hustle and resilient spirit were forged on the streets of Atlanta. To much reserve, she now finds herself in conservative middle America alongside her well-intentioned husband (J. Bernard Calloway), a struggle of a sister (Tami Roman), and two distinct sets of kids raised under very different circumstances.

Exclusive: UTA has signed faith-based writers, producers and directors Andrew and Jon Erwin. The agency will also rep Kingdom Story Company, the production shingle they co-founded alongside Kevin Downes and Tony Young. The Erwins are best known for helming I Can Only Imagine, the $7 million-budget pic that grossed $83 million domestic to become the top-grossing indie film of 2018. They most recently released I Still Believe, a romance following the true-life story of Christian music star Jeremy Camp, starring K.J. Apa.
The Erwins and Kingdom Story Company have a multi-year film and television deal with Lionsgate. They are next planning to direct American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story, about the undrafted quarterback who at one point stocked shelves in a grocery store for $5.50 an hour but didn’t lose faith, and became one of the most prolific passers of his era and an Mvp and Super Bowl champ with the St. Louis Rams.

Desperate circumstances call for a miracle, which makes the pairing of the terminal-illness-romance subgenre with sacrifice-obsessed, faith-based storytelling an obvious match. As such, their fusion has now yielded “I Still Believe,” an overbearingly saccharine young love story with concert-movie undertones from writing-directing duo Andrew and Jon Erwin that’s based on Christian singer-songwriter Jeremy Camp’s career and first marriage.
“Riverdale” star Kj Apa renders Camp a wholesome college heartthrob and aspiring musician from Indiana with a go-getter attitude who, in 1999, meets Jean-Luc, his best friend and mentor, and Melissa, the girl he falls for at first sight. She is just as interested in him.
Aborting an unwanted love triangle, Jeremy and Melissa manage to get together until illness tests his commitment. Her aggressive cancer diagnosis doesn’t deter those feelings but rather incentivizes Jeremy’s determination to stay with her because the trials must be a sign from a higher power.

<< Continued from "Weekend Forecast"At the domestic box office, at least, Gone Girl will face stiff competition from Annabelle, which opens at 3,185 locations. The movie's biggest selling point is the fact that it's a prequel to 2013 horror sensation The Conjuring (it shows the origin story of that movie's creepy doll). That movie opened to $41.9 million last July, then held well on its way to a $137.4 million total. It has had a robust post-theatrical life as well, and currently has a strong 7.5 rating on IMDb (in comparison, Insidious and Sinister both have a 6.8 rating).Aside from highlighting the Conjuring connection ("Before The Conjuring, there was Annabelle"), marketing has attempted to highlight Annabelle's scares by showing audience reactions during the movie. While that's an effective strategy, it can't completely make up for the fact that Annabelle doesn't seem to have any moments on par with the clap game from The Conjuring.Annabelle...

On one of the worst weekends in years, Guardians of the Galaxy easily held on to first place for the third-straight frame. Meanwhile, The Identical*the week's only new nationwide release*bombed with less than $2 million. The Top 12 earned $51.5 million, which makes it the lowest-grossing weekend in six years. Draft Day I guess the discussion before releasing Draft Day was whether or not to take advantage of the start of the NFL season with the theatrical release or the DVD and Blu-ray release and the home video marketing team won because clearly that's the reason for bringing it out today, but does anyone care at this pointc The movie is no good, especially for anyone with a passing understanding of, or interest in, the NFL.

Thanks to two major comic book sequels and a highly-anticipated monster movie, May box office wound up over $1 billion for the fourth year in a row. Without any of those movies truly breaking out, though, overall business was at its lowest level since 2010.Those three movies*The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Godzilla and X-Men: Days of Future Past*all opened over $90 million. That's only the second time that's ever happened: the first was in May 2007, when three titles debuted north of $110 million.Unfortunately, all three of the May 2014 blockbusters dropped off at least 60 percent in their second weekends: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Godzilla are going to struggle to reach $200 million, while X-Men: Days of Future Past will fall short of its franchise record. With over four weeks of theatrical engagements, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 led the box office in May with $191.6 million. This weekend at the box office was kind of a no brainer. With Gareth Edwards' highly anticipated Godzilla reboot finally hitting theaters (with many postive reviews behind it), many assumed it would have a large opening. Even so, it blew past all predictions (nearly topping The Winter Soldier's opening) and landed a massive lead over every other film this weekend. Come inside to check out the full breakdown!
Over the last couple weeks, many analysts were reporting that Godzilla was heading towards a $68-76 million weekend, which in itself would have been very good. So it's really awesome to see that it made $93 million instead, blowing past all predictions and nearly topping the charts for 2014 so far. With the positive buzz behind the film, it's likely to keep going strong (though X-Men will take a chunk out of it). Neighbors dropped to number 2, with Amazing Spider-Man 2 still trailing...

Zac Efron's Bad Neighbors fell to second place, taking $25.9m on its second weekend.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 took $16.8m in third place, dropping 52.7% from last weekend. The superhero sequel's domestic total now stands at over $172m.
Disney's Million Dollar Arm - starring Mad Men's Jon Hamm - debuted in fourth place with $10.5m, while Cameron Diaz's The Other Woman slipped to fifth place with $6.3m.
Heaven Is for Real dropped two places to six with $4.4m.

Universal got a little bullish with their $51 million estimate for Neighbors as the box office actuals have rolled in and the R-rated comedy finished with $49 million, but we're still looking at a tremendous result for the $18 million-budgeted feature. Of course, when it comes to reader predictions that's a big slide that pretty much changes those point standings. Same goes for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which came in $1.5 million less than it was estimated, finishing its second weekend with $35.5 million, down a whopping 61.2% from its opening weekend, which is sure to draw even more scrutiny for the second installment in what Sony hopes will be a massive Spidey universe. Luckily for them, blockbuster cinema is now global and the $250 million film (plus $180 million for marketing) is just shy of $550 million worldwide. As for the weekend's two other new wide releases, Moms' Night Out limped in with $4.3 million and Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return finished with $1.7 million.

This weekend's box office winners and losers defied expectations in extreme ways; with its estimated $51.1 million debut, the R-rated comedy "Neighbors" knocked "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" off its perch and earned $10 to $15 million more than anyone predicted, while the animated musical "Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return" barely managed an eighth-place debut with an estimated $3.7 million, about a half to a third of what many pundits predicted. But both movies have something in common: they're examples of the importance of booking the right number of theaters.
"Neighbors" had a lot going for it: it was well-marketed, it follows the trend of raunchy comedies doing well in the summer, it had weak competition, and even critics liked it. Still, Universal was wise to book it on 3,279 screens and no more. "Spider-Man 2" is playing on nearly 1,000 more screens, but it was due for a big fall (almost 60 percent) in its second week,...

Amir here, with the weekend's box office report. Three new films were released, all of which surprised with their numbers but in different directions. Neighbors, the Seth Rogen/Zac Efron comedy beat The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to first place, and while that isn't surprising in and of itself, the fact that it raked in $51m certainly is. I quite like Seth Rogen, at least compared to other dudebro-y comedians of the moment, and Rose Byrne is a treasure, but I couldn't find the enthusiasm to drive to their neighbourhood just yet. Maybe when the film is out DVD...
Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return turned out to be a flop of catastrophic proportions, the likes of which I don't think I've ever seen. It managed a paltry 1.4k per screen average. Mom's Night Out is yet another "faith-based" film, this time dressed as a comedy - not that Heaven Is For Real...

Seth Rogen and Zac Efron hosted a party at the movies this weekend, and audiences showed up in droves for it.Playing at 3,279 locations, Neighbors opened to an incredible $49 million. That's one of the biggest debuts ever for an original R-rated comedy.Meanwhile, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 fell hard in its second outing. Still, the superhero sequel is making up for its domestic shortcomings with strong overseas earnings.Among original R-rated comedies, Neighbors trailed Ted ($54.4 million) and Sex and the City ($57 million, and debatably "original"). At the same time, it was ahead of major R-rated hits like The Hangover, The Heat and 21 Jump Street. It's also the biggest debut ever for a live-action Seth Rogen movie ahead of The Green Hornet ($33.5 million). From its first preview, Neighbors looked like a hit. The comedy had a relatable, clearly-articulated premise ("Family vs. Frat") that was hammered home in all of the marketing material.

Original Seth Rogen comedy "Neighbors" (Universal) easily won the weekend. The race for first place wasn't even close against the second weekend of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" (Sony). When comic-book movies open strong they usually fall off dramatically. This weekend doesn't measure up to last year, when "The Avengers" soared to much bigger numbers, so the overall Top 10 dropped ($126 million against $151 million). In just two short weeks, the year to date total comparison has fallen from over 9% ahead (for the first four months) to just over 6% as we get into the summer. "Neighbors" did better than last year's "The Great Gatsby," which lagged $20 million behind "The Avengers." This weekend saw some solid holdovers, far above average, in the Top 10. But two new releases, "Moms' Night Out" (Sony) and "Legends of Oz" (Clarius) were duds, delivering less than $5 million. 1. "Neighbors" (Universal) New Cinemascore: B; Criticwire: B; Metacritic: 68 $51,100,000 in 3,279...

I'm not sure what a "B" CinemaScore means when it comes to an R-rated comedy. Considering it didn't show any signs of slowing after a whopping $19.6 million, I'd say it doesn't mean much as Neighbors rocked the box office with $51 million, more than $11 million over its tracking, not to mention another $34.4 million coming in from overseas. For comparison, in 2012 Ted opened with $54.4 million in June and went on to make over $218 million domestically. I don't see those kinds of legs for this one as Neighbors is a little more of a straight-forward comedy, but given the $18 million production budget this is a very impressive result. Perhaps the CinemaScore will show its effect next weekend. One thing going for it is it was driven by a 53% female audience, pretty good for a movie targeting men and perhaps that helps explain that CinemaScore a little more. When it comes to The Amazing Spider-Man 2...

The R-rated comedy "Neighbors" has taken Spider-Man to school. Friday's box-office figures are in and the Zac Efron and Seth Rogen-led comedy earned an estimated $19.6 million on its opening day.
That indicates the film could open with around $50 million for the weekend - which would be one of the highest original R-rated comedy debuts of all time. It's also far above the $30 million that Universal said they were expecting the film to open with.
It's a more impressive performance than "The Amazing Spider-Man" which pulled in $10.1 million on Friday, down 71% from last Friday's opening day figure. The sequel is expected to generate around $35 million domestically for its second weekend.
This marks the first time since 2009 that a comic-inspired summer movie will Not spend two weeks on top of the domestic box office. The last one was "X-Men Origins: Wolverine". The domestic woes are countered by the overseas tally which is currently around $340 million.

Well, there is no doubt Neighbors will be taking the #1 spot this weekend after an estimated $19.6 million Friday, crushing The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which fell 72% compared to last Friday, taking in an estimated $10.1 million. The dip is on par with drops from other superhero movies, including Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but when you consider the $250 million budget (and $180 million spent on marketing) you have to begin to wonder why they don't spend a couple of those millions investing in better screenwriting. Of course, the film will be crossing $500 million worldwide, but given the future prospects Sony has for this franchise, that number just isn't big enough. Spider-Man will continue, but perhaps a new motto over at Sony should be, "Make a Better Movie." A couple of other new films also did very poor business with Moms' Night Out earning an estimated $1.25 million from 1,044 theaters and Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return...

Neighbors got off to a raucous start at the box office on Friday. Meanwhile, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 kicked off its second weekend with a steep drop.Playing at nearly 3,279 theaters, Neighbors opened to a fantastic $19.6 million on Friday. That's bigger than The Hangover ($16.7 million), and barely below Ted ($20.6 million). It's also the best start ever for a live-action Seth Rogen movie ahead of Superbad ($12.3 million). For the weekend, it should earn at least $50 million. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 dropped to second place with an estimated $10.1 million. That's off 71 percent from last Friday, which is identical to Spider-Man 3's drop at the same point. The superhero sequel could wind up as low as $34 million this weekend.Despite facing tough competition from Neighbors, Cameron Diaz comedy The Other Woman only dropped 41 percent on Friday. The movie added $2.82 million for a new total of $55.3 million.Heaven is for Real took fourth place with $1.65 million,...

The predictions are in and I'm a little surprised to see the consensus in thinking Neighbors will hold The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to only one weekend at the #1 spot. Is that because Neighbors has received so many great reviews and Spider-Man 2 seems to have largely flat-lined with audiences or what givesc The readers are a little more bullish on Spidey than Laremy, but a second place finish is still second place. The reader average for Neighbors went $400,000 higher than Laremy, which means he's likely to lose this race once again as I also expect the Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne and Zac Efron comedy to score big this weekend, most likely bigger than that. The readers also see a little more second weekend potential in Spider-Man 2 than Laremy, predicting a $38.5 million sophomore session for the webslinger, just shy of $2 million more than Laremy's prediction. The two left field newcomers...

Friday Am Update: Neighbors earned an estimated $2.56 million from Thursday night shows beginning at 8 p.m. That's a strong result for a comedy; in comparison, Ted earned $2.63 million from midnight shows in June 2012. While it's unlikely that Neighbors comes close to Ted's $54.4 million debut, it still seems poised for at least $35 million this weekend. Forecast: It's Mother's Day weekend. Do you know what your neighbors are doing? If they're fans of R-rated humor, chances are they're on their way to see Seth Rogen/Zac Efron comedy Neighbors. Thanks to a highly relatable, laugh-out-loud marketing effort and strong early reactions, the Universal release could earn over $40 million this weekend. That would likely be enough to upset The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which is poised for a steep drop from its $91.6 million debut. The superhero sequel has received middling reviews (55 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) and mixed word-of-mouth ("B+" CinemaScore): on both of those metrics,...

This weekend, Seth Rogen takes on Zac Efron and his entire frat in "Neighbors" (check out their hilarious Unscripted below); the Kristen Bell-starring "Veronica Mars" is out on DVD; psychological horror-thriller "Penny Dreadful," starring Eva Green, premieres on Showtime; and the sinister mini-series "Rosemary's Baby" with Zoe Saldana comes to NBC this Sunday.
Also in theaters this weekend: Written and directed by Jon Favreau, "Chef" follows a recently-fired chef (Favreau) who starts up a food truck to reclaim his creative promise and unite his estranged family. "Fed Up" is a documentary that upends the conventional wisdom of why we gain weight and how to lose it, and unearths a dirty secret of the American food industry along the way. Neighbors could be a dark-horse winner this weekend, the stars have truly aligned. The trailers make the film look surprisingly good, even though it's nothing of the sort (Brad would probably disagree based on his review). However, it could pull in key demos such as date night, bro night, and those looking to recapture the magic of Old School. It only needs to pull off this chicanery for one weekend, and my $40.0 million flat prediction might still be under where it ends up. Of course The Amazing Spider-Man 2 could also win the weekend, but it's no longer the prohibitive favorite. It will face a prodigious drop off, in the vein of all superhero films, as the crowds don't wait for those. Waiting is for suckers, ehc From $100 million dollar forecasts all the way down to $36.6 million for its second weekendc You betcha! We talked about Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return...

Outrageously enough, the moral of Moms' Night Out seems to be that moms should never get a night out. This Mother's Day weekend release is pretty much a PG-rated The Hangover, but with an ill-fitting God angle that slowly wedges its way into the movie — an agenda that, in retrospect, explains the conspicuous lack of booze, drugs, and sex.

As the start of the Summer movie season, the month of May is typically loaded with major franchise fare*both established and aspiring ones. This year is no different, though each of the would-be blockbusters comes with a few question marks. The current May record was set in 2013, when the month racked up $1.14 billion in total box office. Without an Iron Man 3, it's hard to imagine that May 2014 gets quite that high.
