Cheesy, campy, and oddly enjoyable...
paul_haakonsen8 April 2024
I have to say that the movie's title made me stop and have a gander. And of course, I had to sit down and watch it, on account of it being a horror movie that I hadn't already seen, and one that had icon horror creatures such as Dracula, the mummy, the werewolf, the Invisible Man and Frankenstein in it.

Sure, I had neve heard about the movie, so I didn't know what I was in for. But I have to say that with Michael Madsen being on the cover, then I wasn't really expecting a whole lot. And when the movie started and those two dreaded words, The Asylum, popped up on the screen, my expectations went from slim to none.

I can't claim to say that writer and director Jose Prendes delivered a particularly impressive script for the movie. Sure, it was watchable for the cheesy rubbish that it was, but if you're here in search for a properly entertaining creature feature, then "Monster Mash" will leave you sorely disappointed.

The narrative in "Monster Mash" is pretty sluggish and slow paced with very little of anything overly interesting happening. And that made sitting through the movie quite an ordeal.

Of the entire cast ensemble in "Monster Mash", I was actually only familiar with Michael Madsen. The acting performances in "Monster Mash" was okay. Sure, you're not in for any award-winning performances here, but the acting performances were actually fair for a movie such as what it turned out to be.

The effects in the movie were fairly okay too. Not top of the line, of course, but certainly good enough. And for a movie brought to us by The Asylum, then the effects were not too shabby, well except for that atrocious CGI animated beastial creature that looked like something from an early 1990s computer game. What were they thinking with approving that for the movie? And the scene with the giant beast and the giant bat, well that just was an eyesore. It was as if they hadn't added the final details and textures, sort of if you were looking at a rough draft of what they wanted the scene to look like.

Cheesy? Check. Low budget? Check. Enjoyable? Check, well if you enjoy these sort of dubious horror movies.

My rating of "Monster Mash" lands on a five out of ten stars.

This movie made me animated.
Slyvaina28 April 2024
I saw the title and art and that was it.

I started off and I understood it was low budget. That's not my problem with it. I actually like Draculas delivery and there were some scenes I think were shot well. The Invisible Man also stood out.

Issues were its consitency. The story flow was bad. The points to move the plot forward flopped. I wish I had more characters to describe how irrational upset I was at this movie. This had a great premise and it failed to give anyone developmenm. Without spoilers I just feel they could have done a lot more for The Mummy, who I felt was just a tag along the whole way. Same with the Werewolf. This was Draculas movie and the Invisible Man helped him get there.

I honestly would have loved this movie if it sat in the camp, but it pulls away so often and takes itself seriously. Its attempts in parts to be an homage to classics didn't work out. The part with CGI was bad, but it reminded me of old 40s stop motion, so that gets no bad marks from me.

Wasted potential. Funny bits. I MST3Kd it with a friend, which took it from a 2 to a 5 for me. Cleaning up the story, embracing the camp, giving more of the characters things to do would have sent me over the moon.

I want to see more from Ethan Daniel Corbett.

Could have been an Are you Afraid of the Dark episode. Thats what this movie was.

Monster Mash: Who was this aimed at?
Platypuschow24 April 2024
Plot

Dracula, Werewolf, and the Invisible Man must work together to stop Dr. Frankenstein from creating an unstoppable monster.

Cast

Michael Madsen in the death throes of his career in a movie made by the same guy who gave us two awful Hansel & Gretel films and reached such pinnacles as Mega Shark vs. Mecha Shark!

Verdict

Did you ever watch the mega cheesy Monster Mash The Movie from the mid 90's? Me neither though I remember seeing the trailer and thinking it looked awful. I'll put my life savings down now that movie is better than this one!

Unsurprisingly an Asylum movie, Monster Mash sees most of the classic movie monsters collide in a movie advertised as a horror but let me assure you couldn't be further from. It's like an unintentional comedy and a stupidly campy one at that.

A vampire, Dracula, Frankenstein, Frankensteins monster, wolfman, the invisible man and of course a mummy. How could this possibly be bad? Well, very easily now you ask. I mean, it's an Asylum movie the better question is surely how could it possibly be good?

The acting is hilariously poor, Madsen included as this man just doesn't try anymore and why should he? He's gone from big Hollywood mainstay to will do anything for a dollar.

The story is contrived, the execution is dreadful and I found myself simultaneously cringing and wincing at the same time throughout.

Who are these movies aimed at? Too violent for kids, too dumb for adults.

Rants

One day someone needs to sit me down and explain how The Asylum movies make money. They can't make enough off the backs of people accidentally buying their movie instead of the one they're mockbustering surely! I've seen countless and am confident they'd reach an average of the early 3.0's if I totaled them all up. Then again are they any worse than ITN, Uncorked, Scyfy themselves? Awful, awful stuff.

The Good

Well, there's a lot going on

The Bad

Dreadful acting It's all so, stupid Seeing Madsen in a film like this is unsurprising but still sad Did I mention how stupid it all is?

Thank goodness for fast forward.

Is this a joke?

I was honestly waiting for the punchline.

Waiting for the scene that would indicate this was meant as a comedy or parody of vintage Horror films.

But it never came.

The movie contains every frickin' monster Universal could imagine jammed into one film, and not comfortably.

Poor acting, poor lighting, painfully long dialogue and...Micahel Madsen.

Oh how far you've fallen from Reservoir Dogs.

This film should be dropped into a reservoir.

Listen, I think classic Universal is some of the best celluloid ever produced.

And I understood the homage paid to the classic era of monsters.

Even the scary warnings theaters used to show before a cheesy bad monster flick.

Before...before!!...not three quarters of the way into the movie!!

This was a joke right? ...right?

find out who did the marketing ... and hire them
A_Different_Drummer8 April 2024
First the movie. Possibly one of the worst I have seen, and that includes my 2000+ reviews here. The lighting is so dark from scene to scene you might actually think the screen on your device has failed. The writing and acting and overall effect -- or lack of same -- will make you wish the film had originally been done in any language other than English. That way, at least, you could dismiss the end result as bad dubbing. Or bad subtitling. But none of that is "the" extraordinary thing about this film. The extraordinary thing about this release is that the marketer decided to throw all the lemons into the metaphorical blender and make lemonade. The press kit for MONSTER MASH actually touts the fact that it was shot in only 5 days -- like that is a plus! Feels more like 5 hours. Worse, some reviewers actually fell for this hustle, and praised the end result as "campy" ... and "fun". The only fun thing about this movie is pressing the STOP button and taking your trade elsewhere. Except for the marketing. The marketing is brilliant. And campy. And fun. ((Designated "IMDb Top Reviewer." Please check out my list "167+ Nearly-Perfect Movies (with the occasional Anime or TV miniseries) you can/should see again and again (1932 to the present))

Michael Madsens Best To date - Its Pure Horror, but fun!
baalknokkel8 April 2024
This is very much like The Mummy ( 2017 ) about an ancient Egyptian princess is awakened from her crypt beneath the desert, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. Though safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess, whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in the current day bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. The Mummy ( 2017 ) is deemed Tom Cruise best film as well. Go see Monster Mash (2024). Director Jose Prendes is one to watch. His next feature will be Puppet Master: Furnace Leech Woman.

The Asylum, doing what Hollywood won't
adrenachrome8 April 2024
So this is presented as by the Asylum, but I believe it's actually done by another firm (Acme Holdings, or something, it's not clear to me who actually made the film.) But no matter, this is something Hollywood should be doing: Making movies fun again.

Cheesy? Mountains of it.

Low budget? Only the lowest.

Amateur acting? Sort of, it's not top notice but you could tell it was a labour of love and Ramses especially was having a great deal of fun with his part. They all did really, Dracula being reserved and mysterious, the Invisible Man drawing heavy inspiration from his counterpart in the Doom Squad. The Wolfman didn't have as much screen time as I would have liked to see, but he did well with what little he had. Indeed the only naff acting was from Dr. Frankenstein, the actor playing him was kind of going through the motions, which is kind of a shame as I am given to understand he has done much better in the past.

No matter, the plot is straightforward and there is little in the way of twists and turns, but all...err...mashed together, and you a fun little film that the big production houses could learn a thing or two from.

Definitely one for the group watch.

Good, cheesy, fun!
CountVladDracula25 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Last night I watched the new Asylum mockbuster, Monster Mash.

What is Asylum? And What is a Mockbuster? A Mockbuster is a low budget knock-off movie of a film that is either already a blcokbuster hit or anticipated to be a hit. When Pacific Rim came out Asylum released a Mockbuster called Atlantic Rim. When Dracula 2000 came out, Dracula 3000 aired on The Scifi Channel. When Morbius came out, Asylum made Dracula: The Original Living Vampire.

Sometimes the connection to the blockbuster they were "inspired by" is very slim.

Asylum was founded twenty-five-years-ago to make mockbusters of high budget, blockbuster, and mainstream scifi and horror films. A lot of Asylum's creations have been released on Syfy (Formerly the Scifi Channel) as Syfy original movies.

Most Asylum movies are either made-for-TV or direct to DVD / Blu Ray / Streaming.

One season of the Netflix incarnation of Mystery Science Theatre were all Asylum mockbusters.

This year there was a highly anticipated vampire movie called Abigail. The plot was about the daughter of a crime boss (heavily implied to be Dracula all along). The daughter gets kidnapped and it turns out her kidnappers are actually her intended victims.

So Asylum released their own Mockbuster called Monster Mash and managed to release it two weeks before Abigail came out.

And what a treat this Monster Mash was! It was so delightfully corny! So wonderfully bad. I actually loved it. This was a so-bad-it's-good movie.

There are other films called Monster Mash, including a semi-Juke Box musical. This is the only one from 2024.

I think I liked Asylum's Monster Mash more than the 2012 Dario Argento's Dracula, which until now, was my favorite campy, bad Dracula movie. My nickname for Dario Argento's Dracula is Mantis Drac because Dracula transforms into a giant female preying Mantis at one point with very low quality CG effects.

In Monster Mash, Dracula's daughter is kidnapped by Boris (A rather simple minded but sweet hearted Frankenstein monster) serving the evil Dr. Frankenstein, who wants to use Dracula's daughter as bait to lure out Dracula. Dr. Frankenstein is dying and wants to transfer his consciousness to a new monster, an utterly indestructible monster- supposedly. Dr. Frankenstein wants to use the parts of all the classic monsters including blood from Dracula, skin from The invisible Man, the heart of Rameses The Mummy, and the limbs of an immortal werewolf.

Werewolves in traditional folklore, and the original Universal monster movies actually were immortal except when it came to silver.

The movie has minimum gore and suspense (except perhaps where Dracula almost kills his daughter's slave girl). It's tame enough where I think it could work for a child's first introduction to the classic monsters in a horror setting. (You know, outside of cartoons like Hotel Transylvania).

I liked it a lot. For an Asylum film there was limited low-quality CG except once Dr. Frankenstein's creation came to life. That's when Asylum brought it its trademark low quality SFX.

The movie was not just a mockbuster of Abigail. It also felt like League of Extraordinary Gentlemen but with the classic monsters. There were aspects that reminded me of House of Frankenstein.

Dracula's daughter even had wanted a cure for her vampiric condition, like in the Universal monster movie, Dracula's daughter. There are a lot of nice, subtle, homages to classic monster movies.

You realize pretty fast that the classic monsters are the heroes of the story (even though Dracula does occasionally snack on a hapless damsel).

And I found myself delighted through the corny cheese. THIS is what Universal studios should have give us with their promised Dark Universe. THIS was a classic monsters version of Avengers and with the campy cheese of an asylum mockbuster it was actually fun. It was charming.

I usually have difficulty sitting through an Asylum mockbister, let alone want to watch it again. This one I would happily watch again. It was fun. It was cheesy, good, fun.

I liked it. I liked it a lot.

Honestly, the actor who played Dracula was so much fun in this, Asylum doesn't deserve him. He deserves to be in something better but man, he made the movie.

It was the sort of corny movie you might imagine Peter Vincent from the 1985 Fright Night starring in. Much like a classic Hammer Horror movie you can't quite tell what country it's set in or even what time period. There's almost a fairytale-like quality to it. An agelessness that is nostalgic and also refreshing.

This is, hands down, my favorite Asylum Mockbuster. Honestly, I loved it. If I had kids I'd have probably used it as their first horror film exposure to the classic movie monsters, not too scary, yet also well paced and the characters are likable.

It was cheesy, corny, fun. I want to see more monster movies like this. THIS is the sort of film Universal Studios Dark Universe should have produced for us. Somehow Asylum managed to give us what Universal should have. It's rare that I say something like this but Universal Studios take note. The low budget mockbuster did what you wanted to but could not.

I liked this so much I want Asylum to make a whole franchise out of it or even a TV series. I'd watch the Hell out of Dracula and his team of monsters trying to be the heroes. This was some damn good brain candy.

My harshest complaints are that I prefer articulate and intelligent Frankenstein monsters like in Mary Shelley's novel but as this creature was named Boris he's obviously a homage to the zeitgeist Universal Studios tropey idea of the Frankenstein Monster.

Also there's an odd moment where Dracula's daughter (named Elisabeta as a nod to the Bram Stoker's Dracula movie) comments about how she can read minds (with the aid of psychometry) but Dracula cannot read minds. I find this particularly odd since psychic abilities are some of his more common powers, even in films where they forget his ability to turn into Bat, wolf, and mist.

Other than these petty details I loved this movie. It was very bad but very fun, a deliciously cheesy monster movie.

What does anyone expect?
korkysyard8 April 2024
Asylum,Madsen,Frankenstein,Dracula, the invisible man etc etc etc. You know this ain't gonna be nowhere near a classic. But hey, take it for what it is.

Get some pop corn,a few beers and a brain removal and you'll be fine for a Saturday nights viewing. It's fun, campy, silly, corny and basically a tribute not to the classics but all the sketchy remakes of the classics that were enjoyed by horror fans all over.

People are gonna hate that's for sure but if you take it for what it is you'll find some joy out of it.

It doesn't take itself seriously and has some of the worst cgi about but I honestly think this could become a cult classic. Who knows eh?

I just love the fact that someone is keeping the classics alive even if its done on the cheap.

Take it for what it is and enjoy! 6.5/10
simon-mackay8 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Set aside the negative reviews; this film is the quintessential late Sunday afternoon watch, perfect when you're in the mood for light-hearted entertainment without too much complexity.

It may not be a cinematic masterpiece, but it's unfair to disregard it entirely, especially with its quirky James Bond-like soundtrack opening and closing the film. There's a significant number of serious films out there; sometimes, a bit of fun is what's needed.

"Monster Mash" (2024) revitalises the legendary tales of Dracula, the Werewolf, the Mummy, and the Invisible Man, positioning them as unexpected champions against Dr. Frankenstein's new menace. This villain is a powerful concoction of the legends' strengths. The movie excels in character development, humour, and detailed visual storytelling, presenting these iconic characters in a new light while uncovering Dr. Frankenstein's deep-seated motivations.

The film is a standout piece, rejuvenating the lore of these ageless monsters with excellent pacing and a fresh, engaging plot that pays homage to the original myths while giving them a modern twist. It brings these creatures from the mid-20th century and pits them against a well-known foe: Dr. Frankenstein himself.

Assessing the film's elements:
  • Story: 5/10 - Simple yet entertaining, capturing the essence of fun cinema.

  • Acting: 6/10 - With Dracula as a highlight, the ensemble embraces their roles reminiscent of classic characters.

  • Lighting/Grading: 6/10 - Deliberately dark to set the mood, with thoughtful nods to past styles, especially in Dracula's portrayal.

  • Music & Audio: 7/10 - Despite the odd choice of a Bond-esque theme, the overall sound design is commendable and well-executed.

  • Visuals: 5/10 - While not a blockbuster spectacle, it surpasses many B-movies, especially during the climactic battle scenes, echoing the charm of classic monster movies.

  • Fun: 9/10 - The enjoyment factor is high, leaving a longing for more adventures with these characters.

Overall, "Monster Mash" proved to be a delightful surprise, drawing me into its narrative and leaving me eager for a potential sequel, possibly featuring a showdown with Van Helsing.

I truely want to see more from this world that was created.
